About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

Sometimes the most unexpected of routes can take you to the best destinations *Also- thanks for all the suggestions about getting replacement bearings. In theory, this would have worked but the seals are specific to the pump (and are incredibly vital to stop salt water flooding into the engine) which we couldn’t source out here and we couldn’t risk that happening (AGAIN lol). So, we wanted to go with another pump and get the old one reconditioned so we had a full spare of everything for future passages.

Oh wow, only 4k to go before you hit the Big Time! Be sure and have a party worthy of the event, you earned it. And you know.... if you ever really fall in love with a place, why not go with it? Its not like you have a schedule to keep, eh?

This is the correct move mate. It’s easy to rebuild once you’ve got the parts and then you will have a full spare to bolt in in 20 minutes for next time. Mine lasts around 400 hours before either the inner or outer seal goes.

Restless heart, it has been a long time Out here on the journey, for a glimpse of paradise It's getting hard to find a place to go Where peaceful waters flow I took a walk past the old saxon well Down by the cathedral, I heard the chapel bell And joined the people singing for a way to go Where peaceful waters flow And if you don't know by now, you never will Only love can find the door If you could see it now, it's in your hands Only love can reach the shore, to heaven Always, she is standing by my side She's my inspiration, and she's my battle-cry And in her arms is the only place I know Where peaceful waters flow written by Chris De Burgh.

Crazy to think that you could have a pump custom machined out of inconel cheaper and quicker than you could get a factory replacement from Panama.

There are lots of different ‘limon’ fruits here in Central America. Typical are Tangerine lemon, Messian lemon, Greenli lemon, Creole lemon, all with different flavours, between lime and lemon and almost to orange. What you showed there are local oranges.

I suspect this is redundant, but felt it important to mention. That pump is LIKELY rebuildable in a place where parts can be purchased. The seals and bearings are very likely just stock parts that don't need to be sourced through the engine manufacturer. The shaft can be pressed out, new bearings and seals installed, and you'll have a fully serviced spare for next time.
@joes7166
3 ай бұрын
Yes. Looks like it may be a Sherwood Pump. Rebuild kits are available but they may not include the bearing or shaft seal. Bearing is a simple ball bearing. Measure the OD, ID and width. Any good bearing website will no doubt give you several manufactures. Shop around. A few years ago I had to replace several bearing much large than that but prices ranged from about 12USD to over 80 USD for the same bearing and mfg.
What a beautiful location, incredibly warm and friendly people. Although not ideal having your engine broken, it’s given you time to just slow down and take in all the wonderful senses of the Panama rain forest. As you say the local villagers have very little, but are willing to do anything for you. It’s quite a beautiful thing to see. Well done you two for editing and narrating a stunning piece of work. It was a pleasure to watch.👏👏👏

Hi Zack and Becka. God, the boat is looking so good 👌. Sorry to see you in trouble with your engine. Great job, Zack, for dealing with things considering the pressure you were under. That place is absolutely beautiful 💯🥰. If you're going to get stuck, then you could not have picked a better place, lol. Anyway, good luck with the boat, you guys. 👌👍👏🇮🇪

Great episode, nicely edited. Always good to see how people are living around the world and interactions with locals are the best parts of sailing channels. I remember a similar family in a Sailing Atticus episode.

Cant believe how far you have come from the very beginning.... Working in the boat yard, to your first sea trial sail, and to this... Be proud, youve done some great things and this is only a speed bump in the road of life.
Hi Guys! Excellent episode as always! Thank you for sharing your life with us! I know it is impossible to have spare parts for everything that can possibly go wrong but a great backup plan is to have is a pair of calipers. That way you can accurately measure things like bearings, shafts, bolts, holes, etc. Once you have those measurements you can often find what you need locally. The bearing in your water pump is most likely a common size which could probably be found in Panama City fairly easily. The other option would be to take your pump with you to the city and stop at a machine shop where they can often work miracles fixing things quickly and relatively cheaply. Less developed countries often have the most incredible machinists who are used to making things work with whatever they happen to be able to get hold of. For instance they might have a bearing that is just a touch larger or smaller O.D. so they could either bore the bearing hole in your housing to fit or make a sleeve, press the new bearing in and Voila! New water pump! Keep in mind that a water pump is a very simple device. The exorbitant cost is in the castings which are perfectly fine. The rest of it is just a few bearings, a shaft, a rubber impeller and maybe a gasket. Hope this helps! Fair winds, following seas and all the best from California! 🧡

SV Delos have had some amazing experiences, finding out-of-the-way workshops, where they were able to get things repaired easily and cheaply. On at least one occasion, being allowed to do the work themselves, on someone's expensive machinery. What a stunning place to get stuck at. As you say, having the ability to see the pure beauty in simplicity is liberating. I was swimming in Geriionydd early yesterday near Betwys Y coed. The Llyn was like a mill pond, with the sun and mountains reflecting on the surface. Utter bliss. Loved the video.

Hey guys been watching for a while. I really enjoy y’all’s videos and all the remote places y’all find yourselves in. My wife and I travel a lot and through our travels I have to always remind myself to slow down and be in the moment. Life flys by so fast and it’s important to be happy with what u have and not sad about what you don’t. Our lives are so lucky and fragile and seeing how people live in some places is so humbling. Another great episode! What an amazing place!
This was a wonderful episode for so many reasons. From the profound insight about "leaning in" to whatever lifes throws at you rather than getting frustrated or fighting it, through to the wonderful kindness and reciprocity shown to you and by you with the local family, to the growing mechanical comfort you have with dealing with the inevitable vissicitudes of life on a boat with so many systems and potential breakages, to the wonderful montage towards the end of the video (great music choice by the way) which conveyed so perfectly what it is like to cruise, to anchor in beautiful places with spectacular sunsets, and to enjoy living in nature where the land meets the sea. Your video craft is growing in parallel to your cruising skills and confidence, and it's a joy to come along on the journey with you. Thank-you for the hard work that goes in to making theses videos.
You both do a great job of making lemonade from lemons! Always an adventure! Keep up the great adventures and I’ll keep following!😊

Go to the local bearing and seal store, take the pump with you. They can supply you a new bearing and new seals. Have them take out the little springs in the seals and replace the springs with rubber orings. The springs are not designed for salt water, this standard practice here in Mexico. Cost might be $20- 30 dollars.

Beautiful journey in this episode. This is unquestionably one of the most beautifully moody places. The locals, along with the Canadian, were incredibly kind. Perhaps you should frame that bean and call it a virtue. You know, all you had to do was blow into your sail, and the gust would have cleared out the stale air, and sent you flying past this gorgeous island retreat! 😂
A broken part leads to an amazing place and video. With production like this no wonder your subs are up there.

What a beautiful video, thoroughly enjoyed watching this. It was meant to be - broken engine whilst becalmed and a tow into a stunning anchorage for two weeks. A blessing in disguise - but I do hope the engine part arrives ok 👍
Absolutely beautiful ❤
Amazing episode guys, life affirming and such an experience. This is proper cruising, off the beaten track and going where the fancy takes you and the circumstances dictate. Making good of a difficult situation. Wonderful, nothing more to say…. Andy UK

Blessings! Yours is SUCH a good story!
Having a spare pump would be a great thing. I usually have a spare pump as well as a couple of sets of bearings and seals. So I can replace the entire pump (fastest job), then rebuild the broken one (slowest job) and carry it as a spare.
What a great episode, thanks guys
this one brought a tear to my eye!
I have watched all your videos in last few days. There was a shot on your way to the river that might have been the prettiest you have looked. You can see the exciting and wonder on your face and the song was perfect. Cheers and save travels

How good was that, thanks🌿
Glad to see that someone helped rescue you. It definitely appears that you are in a beautiful and minimally touched area of the world. Fantastic video guys! 👏 I've been fortunate enough to travel to many countries and from what I've seen we the people are all the same: kind, generous and friendly. This is the exact opposite of what is portrayed by the mainstream media, whose job is to instill fear and mistrust between as many "different" groups as possible.
