thank you for describing it so beautifully. boc is my religion. the songs make me cry all the time. my poor kids had to grow up listening to their music non stop lol. they are adults now and i was so happy to see my daughter had added dayvan cowboy to her spotify playlist. one thing for sure, the kids have eclectic music taste.

When I first listened to BoC, I never checked out dayvan cowboy. Once I decided to listen though, I regretted not listening earlier. Such an amazing song.

Love how you guys are branching out! BoC is one of the most overlooked musical acts of the last 25 years.

overlooked by who? they’ve had a culty following ever since they started…

@@tolstoyed Cult act means overlooked by the very nature of the term. They are very well regarded in relatively small circles. I bet Yanni, another non-mainstream artist, has sold 100x as many records.

@@chrisNJLiverpool these guys didn’t want attention though. they avoid media exposure as much as they can… take aphex twin, a boc contemporary - when one of his singles was getting high on charts, he demanded his label stops the sales for a while just so it wouldn’t climb higher. and compared to him boc wanted even less exposure. they didn’t give more than a handful of interviews in 30 years probably, they rarely played live, not sure if they even made one official video… not everyone is cut out to be a pop star

@@tolstoyed Agreed. This was never meant to be pop music. But I also don’t think they don’t get the same level of praise as other Sonic pioneers (Eno, My Bloody Valentine or even Aphex Twin for that matter). Maybe because they never did interviews, etc. I’ve been listening to them for 25 years and hopefully they put out a record before it’s 50!years.

@@chrisNJLiverpool love boc, but i wouldn’t really put them in the same category as those 3, since they started a little later, when that kind of music was already quite established. they carved their own path though, like most artists around warp label. and their music is more accessible for regular/casual music fans, so if they wanted, they probably could’ve been more popular. would love to hear a new album from them too

This hits the spot! Love their sound. My favourite album is Geogaddi from 2002, their music is spellbinding with a touch of melancholia about it.

Man! You're hitting another outfit I love. This is so chill. I love how they mixed the guitar into the soundscapes and floats above it.. Another biggie off the album is Chromakey Dream Coat. If you get a chance, check it out. Unfortunately, they haven't released anything in years. It's funny how these types of groups come and go. Lemon Jelly is another one I love that kinda disappeared. In any case, I recommend Chromakey Dream Coat next.

“Dayvan cowboy” is one of my favorites by Boards of Canada…So uplifting. “Everything you do is a balloon” and “Skyliner” are epic songs of theirs as well! 💚

The Campfire Headphase was my first listen, in 2005 and soon after that MHTRTC and Geogaddi. From the latter, KZreadr TennisThom has made a great analysis video. Until that, Geogaddi was gathering dust on my shelf. Not that BoC would require any analysis in order to be appreciated. Sorry Greg, almost forgot to say that I really liked this reaction!

Discovered BOC, the track “Aquarius,” in 1999 or so on a double compilation CD, “03:00 a.m. Eternal.” Per chance buy at Borders, browsing around. No regrets! Love BOC! 🎵 From that same compilation CD, recommend “An Evening with Hefner, Part 1” by Hefner.

Eoin is Scots/Irish for Owen. First heard these guys in early 2000s in the Scottish music scene (they're from Edinburgh), I remember this video on heavy rotation on MTV and the song definitely brought them a wider audience throughout UK and Europe.

Been a fan since '96 (am UK based), this track and the album it came from were a real change for Boards of Canada and a lot of fans didn't take to it straight away. You're right they were a lot more electronic before this album but not 'dance'. They came out of the rapidly growing UK leftfield electronic scene of the '90s. For a really nice (but short) track I would suggest listening to "Roygbiv" :)

I'm so happy to be corrected on this. I thought I heard some BOC years ago and I was 'meh' about them. It certainly wasn't this track - unless I had potatoes in my ears at the time! Loved this - thanks Greg.

Boards of Canada can have an extremely weird and harsh sound on some of their tracks. Not the most accessible stuff out there, but then there are these absolutely universally beautiful heavily gems in their discography. Give "Everything you do is a Balloon" a listen too - also has a very long slow buildup but then eventually gets to some of the most sublime melodies I've ever heard.

The original parachute video is from Joe Kittenger's jumps in 1959 - 1960 testing if people could even survive ejecting from jets and space craft from altitude. They didn't even know for sure if it was survivable! He almost didn't survive the first jump as well.

no, they did not do structured dance, though i see why, from description, you would infer that. just explore Boards of Canada. i only own the first two albums, they both have this cadence, the slow build, but they never lose the sense of structure.

Hey, just found this channel and I'm happy to see someone react to Underworld and BOC, two of my favorite bands. I highly recommend that you listen to Tripswitch - Deer Park, one of the most beautiful pieces of electronic music I have ever heard. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I really enjoy "New Seeds" from BoC and for a darker track that I feel represents their style of music the track "An Eagle in Your Mind". The fan-made video that goes along with it is great as well.

^%*$(@$% BRILLIANT Not many reacting to BOC. You're way ahead of the curve. I love all the albums, but Tomorrow's Harvest is a real journey. Apocalyptic, hopeful, the whole shebang. Kind of like the Dark Side of the Moon for BOC to me.

Whilst you're looking at some electronica type genres, a good one to react to would be This Time (I'm Gonna Try it my Way) by DJ Shadow. He was originally in U.n.k.l.e but has some great, and varied material out since then.

I think they've got 4 good albums in a row, this is one of my favorite tracks from them and a good introduction to them. I don't think Campfire Headphase is that different from their previous work; a _little_ more structure and warmer instrumentation, but really ~98% in line with the two albums before this and the album after this. They've been a consistent band: making consistently good music with a consistent style!
