@@SomeFreakingCactus Essentially the laser will come into contact with the water particles of the fog and be illuminated, allowing you to see the laser path. Like the stuff you see a thief do in a heist. A very powerful laser can sometimes be seen because its SO strong that it is illuminating particles/moisture in the air that are usually too small for less powerful lasers to illuminate.

@Sleepii I played this game near enough to 20 years ago. It was called Khet and it had an ancient Egyptian theme, the build quality was less and the pieces didn't light up, you couldn't move the laser (it was fixed to the board), and there weren't helix spaces preventing movement. I also have a vague recollection of there being a beam splitter piece. Clearly, as everyone was calling it laser chess anyway they decided to stop fighting it, but it wasn't originally called laser chess.

I'm not sure if switches can switch pieces off the restricted sides. Since they also can't switch switches, seems like the best strategy is 1 reflector and defender on either side of the king, and 2 switches in front of the king and defender. I think that may be unbeatable, if you can get your king over there safely.

I played this game near enough to 20 years ago.

Dr. Michael Larson is a professor at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. I remember taking a tour of the engineering school and we went into his lab and he was showing us a prototype of this game. He called it Khet. They ended up selling it under that name for a while then this came out as Khet 2.0 but under the name Laser Chess.

I have an older version of that game. All I do remember is that the king piece would make a sound when it was hit by a laser, and you can rotate each mirror piece 30°, 45°, and 90°. The board itself had to be put together but you could configure it differently. The mirror pieces were all the same the only difference was the color (either red or yellow).

I used to play this all the time. My dad found the original version at Goodwill and I got hundreds of plays out of it. They had a special piece where the lazer would both reflect and go through it , so you had 2 beams to work it. It was like $15 for the 2 pieces but they already made an empty slot for it in the box which was a really really nice touch. As a kid I played this game so freaking much and it was one of those were Id get like 4 or 5 rounds out of it before I got bored. Its a seriously fun game and its awesome to see it updated to nicely

This is actually similar to a game called Khet that was around a few years ago. In that game, the laser was integrated into the board, and could not be rotated. They even sold a "Splitter" expansion piece, which would refract the beam when struck, creating two beams and allowing savvy players to capture up to two pieces per turn. I do like this updated version, as the modular design of the lasers means you don't have to replace the while board in the event of a malfunction.

I had a knock-off version of this as a kid. The lasers weren't as powerful so we didn't get as satisfying of a glow on captured pieces, and the mirrored pieces were slightly misangled so the laser went off course after a certain number of bounces. Still, I have fond memories of playing with this neat novelty!
