    So fun fact, my friends and I playtested this game with the designer, Jonathan Ying back when it was a early prototype. The cards were all printed and glued to cardboard and he had a random assortment of minis to represent the monsters and such. At the time, I think only the minis had gone into any sort of production and even then they were still in the design stage of things. It was a very interesting experience to see what goes on to make a board game. We all got credit in the special thanks section at the end of the manual.

    I picked this game up about a month ago and think it's pretty good. I was a huge Power Rangers fan as a kid, so that definitely factors into my attitude toward the game. I agree with you that the deployments and panic stuff can be unfair and unbalanced. However, they did release an updated rulebook with an easier difficulty level where you only do four deployments instead of five each round. They say the intended difficulty is still five deployments, but I think it's a nice option to have without having to resort to house rules.

    I own a lot of this game, painted it all, had a blast. My default easy mode house rule for new players or young-un's is: An area is panicked when full, sure. However, it becomes unpanicked as soon as you drop under that threshold - so long as at least one Ranger is still there at the end of the turn. It feels balanced.

  • @WishIWuzKaji
    @WishIWuzKaji3 жыл бұрын

    For anyone interested in playing, the updated rulebook includes some optional rules (they started as house rules on the game's Facebook page before Ying and the other devs decided to formally adopt them) that make the game a bit more fair, including one that I like that gives you a last chance if the board becomes panicked. That said, it is as very challenging game even on the easiest difficulty, but that's what I love about it! Really tests your teamwork.

    This was one of the last games the board game group at my work office played last year before we had to transition to work from home, and I think the general consensus was pretty close to yours - it has some amazing details in the art and pieces especially if you're a fan of the Power Rangers, but the gameplay is a little too convoluted and fiddly to be a fully positive recommendation. That said, we still enjoyed it quite a bit and got partway through a game with some of the expansion sets before having to quit.

Aside from the Foot Soldiers, you'd be able to have a full 4-player Dino Thunder game (5 if you pick up the Tommy Oliver pack with Dino Thunder Black) RJ is also going to be in the Ranger Allies Pack #2 (alongside Cameron, Ryan, Zhane, and Joe Shih), as well!

    I am absolutely in love with this game - it's legit both the best licensed game and the best co-op game I've ever played, plus my current favorite overall. I've played with everything currently released for it and I haven't found a bit I don't like yet (except for Ravenous Hunger because screw vanilla Pudgy Pig - looking forward to the balance update coming with Forever Rangers). The complaints in this video are valid, but I think it's really easy to overlook the skill factor to this game along with a couple of other outside things. First and most importantly, the official Scenario Zero contains the suggested "Last Stand" rule where if the board panics you remove all energy from the HQ space and keep going until at the end of the round either the board isn't panicked anymore or the Rangers lose as normal. Bad deployments do happen, though, and do absolutely suck. The fiddly bits and emergent interactions are also a real problem, but one that goes away pretty completely with a few games under your belt. Just getting used to the game flow makes keeping track of passive effects and card guardedness a lot easier. Not that it doesn't still require some cognitive load, though! Being engaged in what's going on even when you're not necessarily directly taking action is pretty important to playing this game. Lastly, the difficulty overall isn't actually that bad - it just curves steeply for new players. My group lost a few and won a few right at the beginning but had tons of trouble and rarely got the Megazord. We've been playing since the game came out and have played regularly for the entire past year, and we've lost maybe four games of the last fifty in addition to playing with narrative scenario rules that mostly make things harder. There are still sometimes situations that are just really difficult to get out of and situations where luck just gives bad results. All that said, the game flow is in my opinion incredibly elegant, and the theming is IMMACULATE. Every character feels distinct and full of personality, everything acts the way it seems like it should. Most importantly, the game FEELS like I remember the show feeling growing up - not hokey and corny and cheap, but intense and cool and high-stakes. The action economy is tight enough that the game is reliably challenging, but given a bit of experience and coordination it gets increasingly fair as you get more games under your belt. If you actively dislike Power Rangers or have a low rules weight preference then it's going to be a hard sell, but for anyone else I cannot give it a higher recommendation!

    I’m def a die hard power rangers fan and I’ve had this game for a long time. I would very much agree that sometimes you can get screwed way too easily, HOWEVER, I think the major selling point (specifically for huge PR fans) is the love and detail in the game. Plus, there are tons of expansions that add new Rangers which is such a cool bonus. I think what keeps me coming back to this game is the variety of rangers and teams and combos you can achieve.

    I may have misunderstood something either about the rules (I played the game myself and I love it) or about your complaints, but iirc, Monsters don't automatically skip panicked areas, they only skip areas that are at the figure limit. On top of that, Monsters always spawn before accompanying foot soldiers. There's also a Power Rangers Deck Building Game coming out this month, and it looks awesome. Hope you get to review that one too.

  • @WishIWuzKaji

    @WishIWuzKaji

    Yeah this is a very common mistake and it does make the game much more unfair if you don't realize that figure limits and panic are technically separate elements (i.e. a panicked area can still hold more figures up to its limit). The rules can be a bit confusing.

    Just recently got this. Our House rule: You lose "lives" in the command center (still tweaking it, but it's 2 right now for 3 players) when all 4 locations are panicked at the end of the deployment phase. And if they all are still panicked at the end of the round, you lose.

    I agree it can be a little fiddly with the instances and sometimes the deck is brutal, but I think it adds to the replay-ability and forces the team to knock out as many foot soldiers as possible. Also a good strategy is to have people die on purpose to get all of their deck back for the next round since usually we lose to the panic tokens and not running out of lives

    I have the game with a lot of the expansions and with my friends we've had to house rules some of the rules to make things a little more fair. One thing we've done is if we have the figure count less than its not panicked. Another we've done is what we call last stand. When all 4 locations are full we have 1 turn to clear areas and so far its made things even.

    19:15 I wish they would add a copy of the Introductory Scenario in the box for the base Heroes of the Grid (even though it was designed after the initial release alongside community feedback) because it (1) is an official game mode and not a table ruling and (2) gives both some helpful variant rules and a gentler/easier intro to the game for first time players. In particular, the two official variant rules from the Intro scenario allow you to discard any card to perform a 1 dice attack with no special effects and, more importantly to this time stamp, allow you to get out of your first loss to panics by losing all of your remaining revives/energy tokens in the center of the board (as long as you have at least one. The scenarios are also HIGHLY worth playing IMO as they provide a great narrative add to the game and a bit of gameplay variance for people who are used to the game. The scenarios are almost like getting to play out an episode of Power Rangers or a chapter of the comics.

  • @almightyk11

    Bought the game myself and it is wonderful to me. Though you got Monster fights incorrect. The Monster/Boss cards actually go ABOVE the Foot Soldiers. There is also Scenarios posted by Renegade, and the introductory Scenario introduces an alternative rule (That can be used in any game) called Last Stand. When all areas are panicked, you instead remove all revives from the Command Center.

    Fair criticisms. I enjoyed the video. I'm curious, I know I did it wrong initially, did you play that figures can still deploy to panicked areas, if they're under the figure limit? Like, in your example about a panicked area with only 1 guy left. Other figures can deploy there until it goes back to the full 5 figure limit. If everyone actually just deployed in the other 3 zones, that is rough. But in my experience that won't happen to often

    I haven't played it, but it sounds really cool, and I'd definitely be interested in giving it a shot. As such, I'm not sure how much it affects gameplay, but flavorfully, a region staying panicked until the threat is removed entirely sounds like it makes sense - people overlook red flags up to the threshold (5), then they start panicking, and they don't relax until the threat is entirely removed. Of course, I'm saying this now, when I haven't played it - and if changing that system makes a better gameplay experience, a bit of flavor would be a pretty small price to pay.

    I like this game a lot but a friend of mine hates it with a burning passion and will never play it again for the exact reasons SungWon stated. The deployment+panic is too much. We played 3 games and lost horribly each time on turn 2 or 3 of deployment never even seeing the final bosses. I have played it solo numerous times and have yet to win. I love the combat and the game is dripping with theme, but they shot themselves in the foot with the "difficulty". I hesitate to call it that because it's just random and not in a fun way like the combat. If you look around you can probably find a variant that is more fair, but it shouldn't have left the design floor in this state

Most boys born between 1980 and 1990 don't need clarification between Foot Soldiers and Foot Clan Soldiers lol The Foot, The Foot Clan, The Foot Ninja and Foot Soldiers is all referencing a specific villain minion. The Foot Clan Ninja - nobody says that - way too clunky.

    @@8LiterallyJustTheNumber8 Oh I'm fully aware. Are you saying it's far more likely he's using that term, in this particular situation, to reference generic Foot Soldiers? A millennial civilian is FAR more likely to associate Foot Soldier with Ninja Turtles than actual Infantry. We're not talking about WW2 here were taking about Power Rangers and TMNT. This is like, if the exact opposite happened and he accidentally called The Foot - "A Putty" and instead of inferring he simply made a mistake and switched the names, you said "Ahh...I don't know if he meant Putty from Power Rangers....Putty is an an actual, real world adhesive.....now if he said Putty Patroller.....

    I love this game, but it is a NIGHTMARE to play with all the expansions. There's so many miniatures, each with their own separate boxes, making setting up a new game or wanting to change monsters or foot soldiers a major hassle.

    I just got rid of the trays and baggied everything in groups. I'm not a painter so it doesn't really bother me, it only then becomes a chore finding one monster in a big bag of them :/

    I have all my characters separated into three big toolboxes-one for heroes, one for foot soldiers, and one for monsters/bosses. I also had the cards with them as well, but then Renegade released a box to put your cards and tokens in, so that's where I put those. Locations and rule books I put in one of the HOTG expansion boxes. The rest of the boxes I have leftover, I put in my closet.

    So, about complexity and difficulty… The game isn't complex at all, the (base game) rules are few and quite easy to grasp, but the rulebook is not greatly done, and make it seems more complicated than it actually is. It's one of those games that's a lot easier to get when someone shows you. For the difficulty… Please don't take this the wrong way, but considering you showed a wrong combat grid (the monster cards should be on top and go first), is it possible that you forgot something else and made the game harder for yourself ? A lot of people have (again, blame the rulebook), common mistakes being forgetting that when a monster is defeated, all remaining foot soldiers in that location flee, you get a zord and the location is unpanicked, or that foot soldiers can go to a panicked location as long as it's not full. That being said, yes, the game is difficult for new players, and you will definitely lose the first game. It's the case of a lot of co-op games when everybody's new, because you don't know how to manage your resources. If you recover or power-up too much, you'll lose. If your rangers stay together all the time, you'll lose. The rulebook kinda make it seems like it's a game for kids, that adults can rush through, but it's definitely not, you have to plan ahead and think about your moves. I wish it was clearer about that. (And forget about the 45-60 minutes written on the box. I'm really familiar with the game, and if I do a 90-minute game, I'll consider it to be fast.)
