My favourite part is how he used aspect ratio to tell part of the story. The majority of the video is in instagram’s aspect ratio. Then, when the character starts talking about their mother, the aspect ratio starts to widen to show the real person. Showing honesty. No longer putting on a show for social media. And then, going back to the “I have an apartment, I have a boyfriend and I’m crazy about him,” etc hits and the sort of “performance” of social media comes in, the aspect ratio starts to go back to Instagram settings and is fully back by the time the character is talking about goat cheese salad again. Such a clever way to add to the storytelling.

Am I the only one who sees this part played out as a white, wannabe, Instagram "influencer" who over-shares information for the sake of exposure regardless of personal content? Everyone wants to be an influencer and some people have no limits You can't send a prayer or send birthday wishes up to your mom in heaven through a facebook or Instagram post.

What’s interesting about this song, is that it does poke fun at the “basic white girl” tropes, because sure they’re a bit shallow. However, it also points out how shallow seeming people also are real people too. They have struggles and pain just like anyone else.

It’s pretty great how a single few seconds of a silly song can completely reconceptualise it. Without that middle part, the song is a parody poking fun at artificial women on social media. With the middle part, it becomes a jab at you for being judgemental and taking away people’s humanity. You almost get lured into this song by laughing with him at the first part before he essentially turns the song back at you and says: hey, these are people you’re laughing at.

It’s both- it shows the humanity and challenges the audience for laughing earlier- while also still being critical of the need to 1. Share everything on social media and 2. Find a way to still present yourself in the best light possible (via the humble brag). What a mind fuck.

Listening to Bo describe his inspiration for making his movie Eighth Grade impacts how I interpret this song. He talked about seeing a teenage girl sitting at the mall looking at her phone, looking sad. But then she would pop up and smile real wide to take a selfie before retreating back to her former hunched posture. And everyone else was seeing those polished pictures of her, but he was witnessing the real her without the camera. In some ways, I think this song is a grown-up version of that, and during the middle section we get to see the real person with real pain behind the airbrushed photos.

Regarding the part about our mom a lot of people don't realize or notice that it happens kind of in the middle of the song, it gets you kind of emotional because it's a sad emotional moment... And then you notice right after that moment is over, it says a goat cheese salad, a backlit hammock yada yada yada. This is just like Instagram, everything's lovely lovely perfect look at me look at me, every once in awhile you see the truth coming out behind somebody, real feelings real sadness, then their next post is right back to a cafe latte or whatever. I think that was his point.

Fuck finally someone gets the whole of the song on the first try. Not everyone got the "give a kiss to dad"

Right before he tells the story, he's seen pointing up to the numbers "27" which insinuates their age. Then in the story he says "it's been a decade since you been gone" to his mom and then tells his mom to tell his dad that he misses him as well. So their parents died when they were 17 and had to go into adult hood and the rest of their lives alone. Really shows how sad someone could be but their social media wouldn't show it. Amazing work by Bo on this.

in fairness, the parents didn’t necessarily die at the same time. the dad is also dead, but that could have happened at any time. obviously just losing your mum at 17 is hard enough to deal with though, so your point still stands

@@TryPuttingItInRice well we've put together her dad is already dead In a later part of the song there's the section that the user described, it's a description of an engagement post, the boyfriend she mentioned in the mom post proposed to her, but she won't have her dad to hand her off in the wedding. The Mom post isn't just sad on it's own, it informs a lot of the other posts and the context they live in, like working out that her mom died when she was 17.

Knowing someone through social media is like not knowing them at all. Reminds me of that Martin Luther King quote: “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”

You picked up exactly what I did! Bo is a tremendous artist, I’m loving your reactions.

The best part of nearly everything Bo does is he doesn’t bully people or judge them. He plays with your expectations, preconceived notions, and even prejudices in order to make you understand how alike we all truly are and to point out deep emotional stuff we all feel buried under the layers, masks, and lies we all tell or are told. Bo lives rent free in your head and gives you tours of things you didn’t even know were in there.

This song sums up the Inside special very well. Performative art blurred with real world problems.

Aspect ratio change - away from the IG square when we pull back and see the real woman behind the curated feed and the return to 1:1 on goat cheese salad... It's effing brilliant.

Bo's voice is unironically really good! :) Great analysis btw!

The thing to understand about instagram is that it's okay to want what others have, just as long as you're strong enough to be happy with what you've achieved for yourself already. Sure, that other person might have a bigger house, but your house is something you worked hard for, and their bigger house could never be your house, and your house can still grow.

This is another one of my favorites., and another great reaction. Like you said about this being more of a song about humanizing the person behind the account. I'm not sure if you spotted the aspect ratio change in the serious section almost like that one yearly post where she opens up a little and you get to see what they're really dealing with in life then it just immediately switched right back to the "basic" posts as that day was finished. When he sings give a hug and kiss too dad I always interpreted that like he had just died at that moment rather than him being dead already and she was like "give him one last hug & kiss for me"

No one ever talks about how he RIPPED duct tape off his beard and mustache. That had to freaking hurt 😭

One. The simplest trick is to wet the glue. It did look like it stuck to it a bit, though, so it was probably glued to a hairless body part a few times first, to weaken the glue. Also, it's not black Flex Tape, so it wouldn't do a lot of damage anyway.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Humanizing the people behind the cliche posts.

I like seeing people that understand the serious part. And I mean at least understand the intent, even if it takes a couple of minutes to understand what it means. Like, I understood immediatly that it wasn't part of the joke, but I started piecing it together after the song was over. The meaning of the lyrics, the meaning of the aspect ratio changing... I've seen some reactors not getting it but not misinterpreting it either, but on those videos where the reactor didn't said "that's sad" there were always comments of people thinking that the joke was how some people write too much on instagram, which I guess it's not meant to have a long text, just short captions. And I guess that's the point of the aspect ratio getting bigger as well: real life is not a 1:1 square nor it can be contained in a short caption. Real life issues go into tl;dr territory and a wider ratio shows that, outside the 1:1 ratio, your room is a mess. But I can't blame the people that think that's the joke. After all, if you don't know bo's work and haven't even watch anything else from "inside", and the only thing you know is that he's a comedian, then there's no reason to think that his song would have a 10% of seriousness in the middle.

Again, you're spot on with the reaction, but I can't help think how many more layers there are to this song based on where this comes in INSIDE. The piece right before this one really takes viewers into the absurdity of "personal branding," so this whole song hits differently than when viewing it in isolation. He was making fun of them for most of the video and then humanized them by reading the caption. Essentially saying behind all this fakeness is a real person.

I think you're the first person I've seen react and get the fact that both of her parents are dead. Most people just focus on the mom because its so obvious. Part of me also thinks "maybe she is the way she is with social media and obviously hiding her true self because she's trying to hide her grief and sadness at both of her parents being fucking dead."

I agree on the third verse, the layers really make a great depth of the song.

This song takes on a much different tach if you think of it being about a single woman (not ALL women) and the whole song is in 1st person. This is her story and how she is trying to capture "Heaven" through pictures as a way to deal with the loss of her parents. The IG viewer will only see the picture of her mom with a caption of "My Favorite Picture of my Mom" and, unless you know her, you don't know her mom has passed, her dad has passed and that she's spent 10 years trying to live her life to make her dead parents proud. We make fun of the banality of the imagery in the rest of the song because it is easier than seeing each picture as a metphor for something much deeper. We are more than the pictures that we post. Each picture is a conversation we want to have if we can find anyone else willing to ask about it. This song is devestating. "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation" - HDT

@@Brooke-rw8rc I can see that. I also think it’s an interesting theory to examine psychologically. There are definitely similarities in the base actions of the characters of the two songs. Both are highly attention seeking, sad, and probably suffering from some sort of chronic depression. But like you mentioned, there’s a huge difference between the audience reaction to them. The woman from White Woman’s Instagram is mostly laughed at for being shallow and dumb, and the man from All Eyes on Me is almost universally seen as tragic and crying out for help. I don’t think those reactions are inherently wrong at all, because the songs are intentionally very different thematically, and I do think one is mostly meant to make you laugh and the other is definitely meant to make you cry. But that’s still such an interesting distinction between automatic ridicule vs instinctive sympathy when the underlying characteristics are pretty much the same but the coping mechanisms are wildly different. We’re very quick to judge someone for finding a way to cope with her problems because her solution is objectively superficial and frivolous, but then we make a martyr out of a man who’s lost all ability to cope and is actively experiencing a mental breakdown. I don’t think I would have ever connected these characters without your comment, and now I find them to be such an interesting pair.

I think any social media depends on how it's used. I mostly use Instagram to follow tattoo artists, painters, and cartoonists. But I used to get sucked into the social aspect and a couple years ago created a second account for hobbies that isn't associated with my real name of ID. It's totally changed the game for me.

While both songs could be construed as making fun of "poseurs," I believe the difference is that "Country Song" depicts rich millionaires exploiting their fans, while the eponymous "white woman" may be putting up a false front, but it's merely to mask her insecurities and make herself feel better. She's a sympathetic figure--the "stadium country" stars who sing about hardships they never experienced themselves are not.

Thier are two kinds of reactors, those that completely miss the middle section of this song and those that dont. Its amazing to me how many reactors are so caught up in the white womans instagram that they completely miss the entire theme of the song. There is a layer to this that's easy to miss. Clearly, he is poking fun at the tropes of white women instagram, how it is self indulgent, but their is a also a real person underneath with real problems that he can show empathy for. But remember that Bo is also out there, putting on a performance for an internet audience, trying to get attention by presenting a marketable version of himself, but there is a person under the performer as well who is having a tough time. He can make fun of white women's Instagram, and literally put himself in their position, because he knows that he isn't different from them. They use Instagram, he uses a Netflix special. Everyone just wants to feel the acknowledgement of their humanity.

I know this to be incorrect, and the reason I'll give you is that the frame widens at that part. During the whole song, the frame is narrow to imitate the formatting of instagram photos, but during the part about her mom, the opens up until the borders are gone completely, before coming back for "a goat cheese salad". This is to distinguish that part of the song as separate from the curated, perfect instagram shots. The view opens up to include the entire person beyond the instagram personality. It's a literal and metaphorical perspective shift. Bo's stuff is more nuanced than just generalizing a group of people. He always brings another side to any cultural or political subject he covers.
