I dont think bo wants fans to feel guilty. He has also made it clear on a few occations that he thrives with the attention and making art. He seems a very self aware person so he wouldnt put anything out if he didnt want it to be shared (he also seems like a perfectionist, so i dont think he releases a special without a lot of thought). The most you can do as his fan is love what he makes. At least thats what i think he wants (like when he said if he stops entertaining you, drop him)

A lot of his songs are. That Funny Feeling, Can't Handle This, All Eyes On Me, Art Is Dead.. A lot of his work is all about being an entertainer whose job is to provide happiness while also being incredible unhappy himself.

I love how the "I hope you're happy" has two meanings. It could be read as genuine, like you talked about, Bo wanting to make people happy. But it could also be read in a more negative, critical way like "is this what you wanted?" Sort of blaming the audience for Bo's mental state. It goes back to how he has contradictory feelings about his fans. He loves his audience and wants them to be happy, but he also hates them for what they've done to him.

On H3, he talked about how after this performance he was backstage just sobbing and shaking. The tour stopped here. Knowing the pain he went through because of his anxiety and complex relationship with his audience genuinely moves me every single time I consider it. He was having a panic attack here from everything I can tell. And he's mentioned seeing it on film years later, and how he never would have known "how panicked that person was" based on just watching himself. One thing though, Bo does love this job in a way. Earlier in this recording he tells a heckler to stop because he is "Immortalizing something he loves".

You can definitely tell, though. Or at least those of us who also suffer from crippling depression and anxiety. All the tells are there. And when he says "I hope you're happy" at the end, you can literally see tears welling up and his face looks so broken. Also, even the pacing of this whole song emulates an anxiety attack. The breathlessness and screaming. I get chills every time.

Yeah.. the screams at the end of this song were not scripted.. He was having a SERIOUS panic attack and pushed through it. After this special he walked away from comedy for 5 years.

there's a moment in the make happy special that also stuck out to me knowing the full story, someone from the audience kept shouting stuff at him: [audience] i love you [bo] no you fucking don't, you do not... haters gonna hate, lovers gonna love, you need to reject both sides of the spectrum to leave a... healthy middle [audience] i love the idea of you [bo] stop participating, not a participatory thing going on up here... i'm trying to immortalize something i've worked on for a long time... shut up!

You're one of the only people i've found on youtube who truly understand the meaning behind these songs. I'd love to see you react to more of his stuff, great content man.

Apparently, supposedly, these metaphors weren't even intentional, but they work perfectly is the thing and it's all perfectly on theme whether he meant for it to be or not. As a lyricist I've been there myself, sometimes you write some stuff and then look at it afterward and realize there's a double meaning, thematic link or symbolic metanarrative there that you weren't even aware of when you were writing it. Art really does sneak up on you sometimes.

@@Swenglish Yeah, Bo said people were reading into it too much. The Pringles and burrito jokes were just funny and irrelevant problems that weren't supposed to have any subtext. But... even if he didn't write it that way, the analogies are perfect for the ultimate message he expresses in the second half of the song.

This is by far my favorite reaction to his rant. He said once in an interview that he was in a full-blown panic attack by the end of the show and went backstage and cried for two hours afterwards. His last scream was raw and telling, I agree. I'm so impressed by your critique of it. We watched a man break down there, and that audience cheered exactly like he knew they would. Bo is an amazing artist, and a great human being. I'm glad this wasn't the last show he ever made.

You can see his hands shaking in the ending of this song. Imagine you're on the finishing line of one of the most terrifying things you've done in your life and it is a open letter about yourself.

What makes this song even more powerful is how he put his entire heart and honest feelings into this song which was the last song of the show, and then disappeared for 5 years. He told us exactly what he was going through and i'm sure the majority of people who heard it still had no idea.

I've never heard anyone else talk about that last scream, and I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed how raw and real it felt even compared to the other ones also, if nobody else said it, he was sobbing and breaking down backstage for at least an hour after this show

Bo also said that the line “I hope you’re happy” was supposed to come off in a way like “I hope you’re f*ckin happy watching me while I’m going through this” but it came off more empathetic at this show so now people can take it either way

I took it as a double meaning “I hope my show made you happy” “Look at what you did to me, I hope you’re happy”

Another sad part about this song, is the cheers from the audience after he says "I should probably just shut up and do my job so here I go" - The audience, or at least part of it, seems to have completely missed what happened, and I can't imagine his personal reaction to that response after he bared himself to them. That was a horrible time to cheer at.

This man just gets it. Without being an actual Bo fan and he interprets everything Bo intends which go over even many fans' heads and on the first watch through. I wonder since you'd said that you weren't a fan of Bo before Inside if you'd start to turn around your opinion on him?

With this being his last show for 5 years prior to Inside, every so often through the years, I would consistently look for the terrifying news that something happened to Bo. He wasn't afraid to be real on stage and most people took it for granted or laughed it off. I was relieved when I saw inside because I knew that my favorite comedian was still alive to say the least. I think you need to listen to "We Think We Know You" from his "What." Special.

We Think We Know You and From God's Perspective are my favorites. Would love to see both of those

This was his last time performing on stage, after this special he quit for 5 years. This song hit different after a couple of years when you realized he wasn't coming back for a while

I saw this live in Syracuse and I can tell you the energy in the room just kinda changed and everyone went quiet and just listened. It was honestly the best performance I’d ever seen

finally a react on this calls attention to the raw primal energy of his screams is in this... The honestly terrifying thing is how... well they fit in the song, it really showcases the self-awareness he has of it all. Then you go one level deeper... He's obviously brilliant, he fully knows the measures of his success, he's logically aware that his work is largely loved... can you imagine knowing that the world finds you to high esteem, while being unable to recognize it within yourself? the human mind is a terrifying thing.

Another thing you might not have realized is when he said “you can tell them anything if you make it funny” is a very important line because it links back to the start of the song. What seemed like “silly” stuff become metaphors. trying to get to something (happiness) but not being able to then “tilting it” and it all being too much for the pringles and being overwhelmed with his life with the money, fame and attention are the metaphorical ingredients for the burrito. He wouldn’t have got half the “ingredients” knowing what he knows now

I feel like the "I hope you're happy" is a double-edged sword. Like he genuinely hopes he made them happy and gave them the night out that they deserve, but also the audience is a major reason for his anxiety issues so it could also be seen as "you contributed to this, I hope you're happy". Both break my heart equally.

I hope that you can watch "Are you happy?", which is the last song on the special and follows "Cant handle this". In my opinion it should always be watched together to get a complete understanding of Bo at that moment in time. And its a beautiful song. So please if you find the time watch it. It is really short but has important meaning.

He has always been open and brutally honest, watch Art is Dead, probably one of his best songs, and it was made more than a decade ago. When he was still just a kid.

This song is from one of his netflix specials: Make Happy, it was his last performance before quit for like 5 years because of his panics atacks on stage, so this is the last song we heard of him before INSIDE.

This was his last live performance before he took a 5 year break from performing because he was having severe panic attacks on stage. He just knew the show so well that he was able to push through. He said in an interview later on that he was actually having a panic attack during this performance, so the screams and the shaking weren't him just acting. After he walked off stage he sobbed for 2 hours and that's what made him decide to take a break from live performances. Really such an amazingly brave guy to even be willing to be so vulnerable on stage.

Dude, this song is really deep. He’s having a panic attack, and he’s describing it and talking to himself and talking to his fans. “I don’t think that I can handle this right now” talking to them “but they don’t even know that half of it right..” to himself. Also, the whole Pringle can thing, a huge huge metaphor. Saying he bottled all his problems and sadness and anxiety and what not inside, and eventually, sometimes it spills and he has an anxiety/panic attack and he cries, or gets angry, or gets sad, it’s really really sad. Same with the burrito, all the “ingredients” (his problems) spilling out. Also, if you didn’t notice this then like dude, it’s kinda obvious; The screams at the end had so so much emotion in them, but that’s not what I’m trying to say if you didn’t notice this you’re dumb, but also, if you didn’t notice that, then bruh :/ I’m talking about how his eyes look very watery at the end, like he’s about to cry, in which he does, he weeps for like an hour after the show. Also, the “I hope you’re happy” at the end of the show, pretty much has two meanings. 1: ya know just the basic “I hope you’re happy” he means it, hopes that he made them happy. 2. “I hope you’re happy” like, I hope you’re happy, but look what you did to me... and look how much you care. They literally started cheering after he said that his problem is them, and pretty much saying, hey, I can’t handle this, I’m really anxious and stressed and scared and unhappy, and all you guys do is laugh. (What I mean by they cheered after he said that, is that they cheered as soon as he went back to the burrito thing. They didn’t care about what he said and what he was going through, I don’t remember the exact line but it’s something like, “you can make them laugh, if you make it funny make it rhyme... and if they don’t understand it, then you run it one more time.” It’s really really sad. -Some depressed 11 yr old lamo

Around the time this special was released I had gone to Bo's website to see where his shows would be and his website redirected me to a page with only the question "Are you happy?" with a yes or no button to click. It really hit hard because there was only one or the other in the answer and no hiding behind normal validations or reasonings. Truly someone who makes you think.

The moment when the audience begins to cheer right after he goes back to the burrito part makes me so unbelievably sad. He just spilled his entire heart onto them and told them his deepest fears and problems, and the audience ONLY begins to cheer when he stops talking about himself and goes back to the more comedic part of the song. Only reassuring him that they only care about his act. I can't imagine how hard that had to have been for him to hear. Really wish I could've just gave him a hug after this show man

@@SuffiReax Tim Minchin is an Australian performer with a similar style, combining music with comedy with a strong satirical slant. "Thank You God", "The Good Book", "If I Didn't Have You" - are a few good ones to begin with to give you a sense of his style/tone. Though there's a lot to choose from. I'd love to hear/see your reactions to his stuff, but I'm here and subscribed regardless :) Your reactions are first class

It's in my top three Bo songs, may even be number one. The way he ties all of the comedy in the beginning to the deeper meaning he talks about later in the song is incredible. The whole chipotle burrito thing is, in my opinion, a metaphor for him taking on too much in life for him to handle and not realizing it was too much until it was too late and he couldn't wrap it all up in the "burrito".

I don't even know how long…. but it was many, many weeks. The combination of everything - the comedy, the wit, the insight, the beautiful yet depressing music, the heart-wrenching, gut-gouging, soul-destroying vulnerability and sincerity.... aaargh, it's still too much. I’ve been bing-watching this again, 5 years later, thanks to “Inside” and I’m loving it (in a very emotional and tragic way) even more than I originally did. Sorry, that was a very self-indulgent rant - what I meant was, I feel you brother.

“I hope you’re happy” kind of has a double meaning with one being genuine and the other being more like “I hope you’re happy that this is what performing for you has done to me.”

I actually think you missed a wrinkle at the end there. The cheering isn’t inappropriate, that’s what he wanted, the crowd acknowledged that he just bared his soul but morphing back into the comedy routine at the very end I think the crowd was simultaneously showing appreciation for his openness but also cheering to play their role as the audience he had ‘’made happy”. It’s gets more meta the more you think about it.

Yeah that one last scream always gets me every damn time. The amount emotion you can hear behind it.

Also, you should REALLY do a reaction of his whole special "inside "and cut it into clips for youtube. its all songs.. all amazing. and Bo's content is some of your most popular right now. do it while its hot. please

He is pouring his heart out in the burrito piece. Everything was thrown into his life so quickly and since it didn’t fit it caused him stress, depression, anxiety. I feel like there are many people reacting to Bo currently, but they haven’t been there from the beginning. It’s truly sad being here from the start and seeing how much of a toll it has taken on his life and family.

Man, just found you a week ago, and you are proving yourself one of the quickest, most perceptive reactors I know. Kudos. The fact that you look so much like Edward Norton, who I much respect, adds a psychedelic edge as well. Very happy I subscribed.

Bo has always been heavy if you look beyond the humor. Even in his funniest songs there are dark moments. I love how deeply you look at his stuff.

A few more great songs that are deep/interesting by Bo from his middle era shows are "From God's Perspective", "Repeat Stuff" (the music video for this one is really great), "Country Song", "Sad", I'm probably forgetting a lot of them because I haven't watched these in years but if you're looking for more to watch, or feel like it; his older songs are more comedic than Inside but usually have some actual deeper meaning or breakdown where he explores something real and they're a great listen. Thanks for the insight in your reaction, a lot of people would have just said "I like that" and stopped recording without any analysis, subbed.

This was his very last live stand up performance. This gives us the entire perspective on why he stopped performing. I love this guy so much. I should have just bought the 2nd row tix to this show I had in the cart and made the trip to NY. Would've been soooo worth it. Top 5 comic all time already. Edit: great reaction!

What I love is that the vocal effect processor is on stage and you can see him tweaking it when certain frequencies get overly highlighted or when he's on the platform with all the lights you can see him adjusting it

It completely messes me up that the song right after this, "are you happy", is in the same room he filmed inside in. It makes sense because he lives there but it's almost like no time has passed at all.

Apparently through that he was having an anxiety attack but his brain went on autopilot so that he could at least finish the song, so as soon at he left stage he broke down.

Bo is literally a genius and 'inside' is a masterpiece

I am addicted to this performance! I’m not sure I’ve ever witnessed anything like this. The words, the threads, the beat…that heartbeat just makes me feel his panic. Knowing now that this was his last performance before he quit for 5 years adds yet another layer. I’m not sure if this is him being brave and generous by sharing his pain, or a giant “fuck you, all of you go away!” His story telling with lyric, rhythm, and visuals is simply nothing less of genius. I’m so happy he gave us “Inside,” but I’ll try to be satisfied with what he gives without demanding more. If anyone ever needs to understand anguish, show them this.

THANK YOU! Finally someone is talking about that last scream. It’s been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it. May it be that they were all scripted and planned out and whatever, maybe art is dead and every show is planned out down to the tiniest details - but he FELT that last one and he needed it to finish this damn show and no one can tell me otherwise. for years I kept looking for reactions to this and there weren't very many. I thought it was brilliant and touching as soon as I saw it, and I'm happy that people are discovering it now, because I thought it was very under appreciated.

The messy burrito metaphor for being unable to handle fame is insanely well written. Make Happy needs to be on Spotify Also new to the channel, great reactions, keep it up sir :)

Finally, someone else who reacted like I did to the daughter part, and to the "shut up and do my job" part where he's kind of mean to himself which I relate to, and "you don't even know the half of this right now," especially to the "you can tell them anything if you just make it funny, make it rhyme; and if they still don't understand you, then you run it one more time." His scream got to me in the same way, and at the last little bit I just get tears. "Thank you, goodnight, I hope you're happy." Absolute gut punch because he sounds so sad. I'm so glad he seems to know now what he didn't know then--he is not alone.

My friend saw one of his live shows in Chicago and when I met up with her recently and we talked a bit about Inside I said that I worried for him and she was like "why?" And I just couldn't believe she couldn't see it-especially going back to this closing song and the entire show. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. I just couldn't believe people not seeing the impact of it all. This song made me cry the first time I saw the show on Netflix like DAMN

It hits even harder considering this is probably the last song, and show, he did before his 5 year "break".

The most insane part of this song is that when you listen to it again (and you will because it’s brilliant) you still laugh at the Pringles bit and then you feel terrible because he’s making you laugh (his job) when he feels like all the rest of it. I love the whole special, it really works best together all as one. They rehearsed it for months in a warehouse because the lighting throughout had to be totally on point and their efforts really shine through in some epic moments. I don’t know if it’s true or not (meaning I haven’t personally found the interview yet) but someone said that after this Netflix taping he went directly back stage and had a full blown panic attack. Just heartbreaking, man. ETA I’ve read comments from people who went to the show who said when he went into the last part of the song they were feeling all of those things too. Just dead silent and conflicted, the way you’d expect normal people to react to hearing that. So at least some of them were taking it all in in the moment.

This song is legitimately one of the more painful songs to listen to, because you can really feel his pain in it, and I hate the fact that he made it so damn catchy

When he completes performing this song, he goes into a room. Where he plays a beautiful question on his piano - "Are You Happy?". This is the same room he recorded and performed 'Inside' in. You should check it out please. Absolutely beautiful.

First of all, really appreciate your effort to be thoughtful and empathetic in your reactions, even pausing and going back when it felt necessary. Shows a lot of effort and insightfulness on your part. In case you’re curious, he took a break from comedy after this special specifically due to panic attacks he’d get when he performed - so his anxiety displayed on stage was very much real. But it’s good he saw the warning signs after this and prioritized his mental health by taking an extended break from comedy, and based on the comments I’ve seen on KZread, I think a lot of people did get the deeper message and just want him to feel better. Anyway, keep up the great work, dude!

i was one of the people where his cries for help literally went over my head. as soon as i watched "inside" everything clicked and i think i cried watching the whole special. i've realized people forget that comedians can joke to help them cope and end up missing the deeper meaning behind things since its written out to make the audience laugh. i'm just so glad he left for the time he needed to and has continued to be open about his struggles. imposter syndrome, depression, anxiety, ..etc is so hard to deal with alone and you feel like you don't want to burden others with your issues. that's why it's so important to talk about mental health openly, so that anyone going through it knows they aren't the only one.

The "I hope you're happy" sounds more to me like "I hope you're happy of what you did to me", I sens a double meaning and even resentment btw, the burrito being him, he wouldn't have accepted this life if he knew half of what it meant to be a celebrity and a stage performer

agreed!! i actually like how he pauses the video and thinks over what he's just heard, this kind of content needs a bit of careful consideration (which is mostly why i think bo is fucking awesome, he always manages to bring all of these hidden deep meanings into his work while still being funny, original, raw AND making genuinely good songs). most of the people who film reactions like these only truly seem to pay attention to the funny parts and go "oh wow. that was deep huh" to the serious parts then immediately move on, so it's refreshing to see his reaction.

The burrito thing is a big metaphor about asking for more and more toppings, then having it not fit, and break apart .. that's why the "chorus" was the shut up and get back to the jokes..

The screaming in the end is a stage technique to push through (pain/tears/laughter/etc) emotions that would choke you up. It forces the vocal cords to open up so you can continue to perform

Yes, “because I’m not” is heavily implied Art is dead by him also gives a lot of context to this

that "I hope you're happy" is such a double-edged sword and he manages to sound kind while looking so destroyed

I love how his comedy has a lot of pieces thrown in there with serious topics sprinkled in .. He is freaking brilliant. Your line about you thought it was going to get deep ..... Then it hit later ..... hard. It got real fast. He baited you twice and then tore your heart out. It's brutal

He definitely has anxiety issues, but the rest of it is just art. He wants to have the audience feel things, he's said that what happens on stage you can't believe, or something along those lines, but regardless it's absolute genius.

He has said in an interview he was having a panic attack during this performance and fully broke down once off stage. It's the H3 interview. He was not doing well mentally at this point in time.

The way he just tossed the mic down and walked away as soon as the song is done just feels so sad. I hope you do “Are You Happy?” which he played “backstage” to finish off this special. Its really just him singing about his depression. Its super short but also just really heartbreaking, but also at the same time, really beautifully sung. One of my favorites from him.

I got to see him perform this live in Philly and it really hit. being the same age as him and feeling like he understands some of the things I go through has been interesting. i started watching him back in his youtube high school days and watching him learn and grow at the same time I have has been really cool.

From God’s Perspective is also incredibly poignant.

I only came across your channel because of the Bo reactions. I assumed it would be more of the same.. misunderstood metaphors, shallow analysis, laughing at inappropriate times... But it’s so not. You really grasp a lot of nuance and it’s really refreshing and interesting to watch. Definitely earned a sub.

I respect you a lot for relistening that one part to take it in and for everything you said at 8:09 You understood it. (Even the happiness part) You understood that this is serious. Idk... Maybe it stands out to me so much because I just saw someone laugh at the "steadily declining mental health" part and was very upset about it-_- Edit : wow... he even got that it went over people's heads. God when I listened to this, okay I was 15, it took me 4-6 listens to fully understand it. I have to say.... thank you. It honestly makes me happy that you got it.

There's something magical about Janis Ian looking over your shoulder, since her song, "Stars," shares so much in common with this song.

This reminds me of hey ya so much That song has a line that fits in with this so well its “yall dont want to hear me you just want to dance” and this is basically saying the exact same thing

That mic drop at the end is so painful. Like he felt he was finally done with it and just needed to get out.

Notice how lights are focused on him when he shares what he feels, then when he said he should probably do his job and then there’s just a silhouette of him. That shit hit me hard.

One of the things that was pointed out to me was that after “here I go” all of the lights overshadow Bo and all you can see is a silhouette

I love that after he says to break it down and everyone cheers like its over he goes "not yet"

The ending gives me chills. I cried the first time I watched the performance.

I saw this show in Seattle and there was a deafening brief moment of silence before the applause after this song. The first thing my friend said to me after the applause was "Is Bo okay? Because that was not someone who's totally okay". It was so obvious to those of us with poor mental health, and it makes me sad that so many of his fans simply couldn't see it.
