BNSF Power Struggle In La Plata, Missouri - Featuring "The Frankenbonnet" BNSF 4729 (09/01/2023)

During an all-normal Friday railfan trip to La Plata, Missouri, at around 6:30 PM, I heard over the radio scanner that the crew in the Westbound BNSF train HNTWTUL1 reported that the third locomotive in their consist (BNSF 1090 - C44-9W) encountered a low water pressure shut down and could not be cooled, and in result the power had to be isolated at MP 291.9 West Baring. With a loss of 4400 HP, the heavy mixed freight train didn't have enough power to make it up the Ethel Hill. The Fort Madison dispatcher quickly handed the case over to the Marceline Dispatcher on the La Plata side and came up with a plan to borrow an engine from the Westbound BNSF train HGALBAR9, which was not fully loaded on this day and still had enough power to make the grades on the Marceline Sub. After the plan was complete and both train crews were aware and briefed, the action began as the two trains parked side-by-side just East of the La Plata station. BNSF 8218 uncoupled from it's train and moved up to the N Owensby Crossing approach lite power. BNSF 5137 then pulled up to the spur with the conductor riding the tail end locomotive. 8218 followed soon after. BNSF 5137 dropped it's third out locomotive that was facing East (BNSF 9166 - SD70ACE) on the available spur track for the power hungry train to pick up. After all of the work was done and safety measures were completed, both power sets returned to their trains and went through a checklist before heading West. The HNTWTUL will have to have a new crew ordered at Marceline to take the train to Kansas City. BNSF 1090 was taken to Paso, WA to be serviced two days later. In this video, real time radio clips can be heard from the dispatcher/crews talking back and forth recorded on a BC125AT scanner. Some parts of this video may appear fuzzy due to the digital camera zoom on an iPhone AND KZread's TERRIBLE VIDEO COMPRESSION. Took the quality from 4K to 720/1080P. In this video, both trains can be seen pulling up to the spur lite power, snips of the 'plant' work, reversing to their train, and departing shortly after. An eventful Friday to say the least. The train traffic rush was extremely impressive after the nearly two hour mainline blockage.

Excellent video KTRF ! It definitely was a fun day for you to get this unexpected suprise from BNSF. Something different instead of blasting through town the two manifest freights run by at reduced speed after the power trouble and an awesome hotshot Intermodal also joining in the festivities. Nice to see the Frankenbonnet unit among the others. The sun was setting and the shadows getting long as the westbound finally continues it's run. Good work KTRF. 😁👍

Breaking this down into a few paragraphs would make it more readable.
