BMX Wheel Truing For Beginners

Ойын-сауық

How to true a BMX wheel!
In this video I talk about my process for truing, dishing, and tensioning a wheel. This process can definitely feel very difficult at first glance, but with a little practice, anyone can do it!
Big thanks and shout out to ‪@parktool‬ for making sure I have the proper tools for the job! They have an entire series on wheel truing that you should definitely check out for much greater depth!

Excellent video, thankyou!!! Watching this will really help me later today in the final stages of tensioning up my e-bikes new MTX39 26" rim (yes, i know its a bmx vid but i loved bmx when i was younger and rode freestyle everyday, im 51 and still love bmx)... I reecently got a buckled hubmotor wheel on my e-build so i bought a new stronger rim to put my hub motor into from the buckled rim... Today I got all 36 spokes laced in (finally, after several duff KZread vids that didn't help at all, but a few did and i managed to do it - phew!!!). Now later today I will be tensioning up all spokes and flippimg my bike upside down and usung the tieclip trick to check for lateral / hop movement... Thankyou, your vid was just the type of concentration information i needed, 'cos im not ocd but I want it to be absolutely perfect as it can be ... Thankyou dude!!! Great vid!! Wish me luck 🤣👍

Yes yes yes yes yes yes I freaking love you dude I have an electric bike and I did not have any idea how to draw a tire today and I was watching literally about eight different videos of a bunch of different dudes that were complete idiots and they had no idea how to explain this in layman terms and I was just sitting here getting super pissed off at my bike on these spokes and I tried to take them and remember okay and on the right side clockwise loosen them and I was getting so mad and I just let the videos play through my headphones and finally I heard your voice going on explaining it in perfect words and then it all just clicked in my mind and it understood everything and it made it so much easier thank you so much

I know it's a bit different (...well, a lot) but today I spoked my hub-motor (from a buckled rim) into an MTX39 26" brand new rim... I've laced up all 39 spokes, tomorrow I'm finishing off the final stages of gradually tensioning up all the spokes and then (somehow) I'm going to put the rear wheel back on my E-bike build and turn the bike upside down and try my best to make sure the wheels as straight (not bent side-to-side, and no bad wheel hop up n down) by using the tie-clip truing technique I've seen others use... Sadly I don't have a wheel tru-ing stand so I know it won't be easy - but so far I'm super happy to have just spoked up the hub-motor into the new rim.. Thanks for the video!!!! I've watched a few others too to get as many tips and ideas to help me get the job done right.. Wish me luck please, I'll probably need it 😅👍

I agree with most of what you say. The one thing I do is to actually overtighten the wheel as I approach close to true radially and laterally. After reaching this point I true both ways only by loosening spokes. This gives you super fine increments and allows the spoke to unwind itself. Tightening the spokes to get close to true and tight will twist the spokes. I have been building wheels, hundreds or more, since 1982 and I guarantee this method works deadly.

I've always been an awful bike mechanic, but I've grown to have more patience with time, but when it comes to lacing and truing a wheel... my patience is still pretty low 🤣 even though it has improved also. However, my lacing-a-wheel patience far from perfect, if my wheel is the same as yours is at the 14:00 mark, I'm done! Here comes the rim tape, tube & tire! By the way, I do ride brakes! 🤣🤣🤣

How about a truing bicycle tire stand that's a little more budget-friendly? I'm disabled on a fixed income and that truing stand is way out of budget. You need to do a video of budget-friendly stands that work well.

Okay I'm stopping the video at 18:40 where it shows the center of the hub is not in the center of rim . To avoid this from happening you have to make sure the center of the lateral guide is at to the center of the hub . It only take a few seconds to make sure you have the guide centered . Just measure and mark the center of the hub before you start putting on the spokes . Mount just the hub and use a square to know where to set the center of the lateral guide . Once you have the guide centered open the guide to the width of the rim . Add the spokes and tighten them up so the rim fits in the space of the lateral guides . If you do this the rim will never be off to one side like you show in the video and it will cut your work time in half .
