There was a time where we were designing systems in the early 2000’s to incorporate Dolby/DTS WITH 5.1 and it completely died off. Multimedia head units like Alpine and Kenwood had the processors built in. It’s cool to see this and incorporating “home theater” staging back to car audio.

I remember that. Kenwood had digital output and Eclipse used to have a speaker that you could mount to your rear view.

Exactly! It's ALREADY been attempted years ago and pretty much failed due to lack of interest or adoption by consumers. The 2nd Gen Alpine F # 1 STATUS DVI-9990/PXI-H990/TVI-T990 system was a multichannel Dolby/DTS/DVD-Audio DSP system, as well as the DVA-9861 DVD head unit. The Alpine PXA-H800/RUX-C800 combo also had Dolby Pro Logic. IMO, it is still just NOT something the AVERAGE consumer wants or needs. Sure, there will always be interest from ENTHUSIASTS like a lot of us here, but that makes up probably WAY less than 5% of the cars on the road! Here are some reasons why I think that Dolby ATMOS specifically (and even "Spatial Audio" to some extent) just won't take hold IN VEHICLES: 1. The majority of music & car audio enthusiast just want killer BASS in their system and for their system to get LOUD while being relatively clean. These OEM Premium systems will still ALWAYS be designed and built to a PRICE POINT for the best ROI by the OEM car manufactures and dealers. Therefor, the performance will still be limited. 2. For the aftermarket segment, these system require even More Speakers and DSP Channels + Amplifier Channels, so that extra cost adds up quick, especially if you want everything in the system to be top tier equipment. So, other than just the cost of the extra equipment, PROPER installation of all this stuff in order to meet/match the Dolby ATMOS specific specs and requirements to perform PROPERLY will be difficult and cost prohibitive. It's something that only 1/2 of of 1% of enthusiasts will want or pay for. 3. As a Driver, it's obviously illegal to watch video or movies while driving, so what's the point? Sure, the rest of the passengers or family can enjoy it, but then there's my # 4 below... 4. My wife and/or kids always want to watch or do their OWN THING on social media while in the car. They ALL would rather use their own smartphones or iPads with earbuds or headphones while in the car so that they can ignore you and chat/sm with their friends or listen to their own music. 5. For movies (what Dolby ATMOS was originally developed for), a good, dedicated movie theater experience will ALWAYS blow away any experience in a vehicle, simply because you can't experience a giant, immersive screen or display in your car, and THIS TYPE OF MUSIC/AUDIO isn't nearly as compelling on its own without the visual element to tie the sound to the action and moving images in the movie. 6. When you go to a live concert, the performers are still all up on a stage IN FRONT OF YOU, so logically, that is STILL where the majority of the sound in the "Sound Stage" should be coming from. Sure, it might be cool for it to sound like you are surrounded by people singing, yelling, and clapping in the audience all around you, but you are still really there to see and HEAR the performers ON STAGE. 7. The main use I see for this is just for the opportunity for every seat in the car to have a better stereo experience with good imaging and soundstage from as many seats as possible in the vehicle, rather than the majority of "ONE SEAT TUNES" via DSP where the frequency response, imaging, and soundstage are optimized for just ONE SEAT (the driver). Andy Wehmeyer of Audiofrog has been advocating for this for YEARS, ever since his involvement with developing the auto-tuning JBL MS-8 DSP at Harman with its Logic7 system over a decade ago. But he's been working on his own proprietary multi-channel Audiofrog DSP that will do this PROPERLY for at least 7 years at this point, and even if/when it is actually released, I'm still not sure how many people will realistically be interested or adopt it, as it won't be cheap. HUGE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A WORLD-CLASS Fully Custom Surround Sound SQ Competition Car: For those that might be interested, Gary Summers (look him up on IMDB) has retired and now moved permanently to Thailand with his Thai wife of 20 years. He can't import his SQ Competition car to Thailand, so he is unfortunately forced to sell it and it is now available. The 2006 Mercedes C230 Sport is in immaculate condition and is located and maintained in a professional high-end auto storage facility in Los Angeles. This system features the full 2nd Gen Alpine F #1 STATUS system along with a plethora of Morel's TOTL Supremo and Carbon Elate speakers all around. Even the C-pillars feature custom pods for Morel 2-way components. The install is almost completely custom fabricated and includes fully custom, resonance-free enclosures in the entire lower half of each front door for the Morel SW9 Supremo 9" midbass drivers. There is a build log with pictures on DIY Mobile Audio Forums. For those that don't know, Gary Summers is/was a very prominent motion picture sound mixing engineer who worked at Skywalker Ranch/Skywalker Sound and did the sound mixing for most of the original STAR WARS movies as well as HUNDREDS of other Blockbuster Movies, such as Jurassic Park, Avatar, Titantic, Terminator 2, Saving Private Ryan, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, several of the Transformers movies, etc! He used this car and system to "check his surround-sound mixes" as well as enjoy music. Gary has won 4 Oscars and 17 Academy Awards with over 47 Nominations for his motion picture sound mixing work. He obviously knows "good sound" and this system is one of the most insane and dynamic/immersive systems you will EVER hear!!! If you are interested in purchasing this truly legendary vehicle, please contact me and I will put you in touch with Gary. His only stipulation is that the car be enjoyed and listened to.

What splits the channels though. Sure the Apple tv gives the signal which is Atmos encoded, but you need a 7.4.1 decoder to feed each amp channel.

I would imagine a toslink cable to the amps and then separating the output channels into groups for each Amp via the built in dsp which would be a series chore

What is decoding the signal from the ATV4K??!! How is it being powered? Are you using a small HT AVR and feeding it 120V from an inverter? Something else?
