If a car costs 50-100K new, can you be really surprised that it might cost a little bit more to repair than a car that cost less? I spent $400.00 on an alternator for my 2003 BMW X5 last week. It's a big 'ol heavy 150A thing that is actually water cooled. I'm not the least bit surprised it costs what it does, nor will I complain about it. It stands to reason that it should cost more than the run-of-the-mill 100A alternator in my old 1988 Jeep Cherokee. When you consider production numbers, type, and design it makes sense.

My father owned Mercedeses since 96, he was satisfied with all three of them but as soon they get older they all are a real pain to fix, very expensive parts. He drove all kinds of cars while working for a few companies but he says there is no car that drives you comfortable and quiet as a Mercedes. But the flip side is when they get old - they are pretty expensive to maintain and fix.

@@kawaiikoto8800 certainly. In taxi use cars can do many miles/kms because the engines are running warm a lot more of the time. Even in Australia most taxis were poorer quality Fords & Opels (called Holden in Aust) running on petrol-lpg. Many did 400,000km albeit with maintenance. In Dubai 10 yrs ago when I was there I was told that the Govt decided on running just Toyota Camrys back then because they were found to be the most reliable at handling the up to 55 degree Celsius (131F) days. The Toyota & Camry durability and reliability is well known to be way above any Euro cars for a similar price.

She found out how expensive those repairs were and even though she bought it without a warranty she was able to get the dealer to pay for it. It's all part of the fun of owning a German car. 'Will my car cost me $3k in repairs this year? Let's roll the dice!' I had a Mercedes from new and the timing chain snapped at 67k km. Destroyed the engine and required a complete rebuild. My employer had a Mercedes where the transmission failed (rebuild required) within 50k km. Another person I know is into BMWs, and has had a string of failed window motors and even a head gasket blow at 70k km. Germans started chasing the cheap end of the market in the mid 1990s, and it really shows.

CatsMeowPaw you’re supposed to replace the serpentine belt on your Mercedes at right around that interval of mileage if you take it to the dealership for regular and recommended maintenance. If you lose/break a serpentine belt driving you will damage most parts and most people will burn up their power steering or burn the heads etc. in the engine up. It’s not called a ‘timing chain’ not in any country, I maintain my Mercedes as the manufacturers recommend and have had no problems ever.

@@Hashdollars he blew the timing chain. Several MB models over the years (over a span of 4 decades actually) are known to do this, the chain drives the camshafts and results in total engine destruction. Engine codes M272, M273, M171, and M102 have all been known to have timing chain drive issues, and engine codes M116, M117, and M110 require routine timing chain replacement.

Never had any issues with it, other check engine light come on when it freaking cold out and I drive off without warming it up first. Never changed transmission oil it, that's the only thing that scares me at the moment, should I do it now, or should I just keep driving it or get rid of it? It doesn't show any signs of not working properly. I was told if I change the oil in it now, it'll probably die within 2 weeks after the transmission service.
