BMW Shimmy with Replica and non-OEM Alloys Spacers and Hub-centric rings

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Have you fitted Replica or any non-BMW Alloy to your car and are now getting vibrations and shimmy? This is part 2 of my series on the dreaded shimmy and today we look at problems caused by fitting Alloys that were never an option on your model - and these can cause endless problems with wheel wobble, shimmy, vibrations and imprecise steering.
The usual problems are due to incorrect offset (ET) and centre-bore. Most replica Alloys have an offset which can put the weight of the car fully on one bearing rather than being shared - and the over-size centre bore can stop the Alloy being centred (all BMW alloys are hub-centric rather than lug-centric) which will allow the wheel to run eccentrically. Where a replica alloy is used it is normal to fit either a hub-centric ring or a hub-centric spacer - both are discussed here and the effects of a hub-centric spacer on offset and the problems they can cause.

Thanks for these videos, I've been chasing a minor vibration / shimmy for over a year now on a 2005 325i. I've replaced half shafts, the drive shaft and guibo, wheel bearings, rotors, all the way around, various mounts and busings to no avail. I've swapped tires and wheels off an e36 convertible that rides like glass and still have this annoying vibration and a sometimes shimmy that I can't shake (pun intended). I've even taken it to a BMW specialty shop and they couldn't come up with an answer. In fact they said they couldn't notice it so maybe I have a hyper sensitive shimmy detector...I don't know. I do know I've been wrenching on cars since I was 13 years old as my pops had a used car business so I do have a feel for what is right and what isnt. This gives me some things to try. I love the way this dumb old car drives when things are working well so hopefully I can now put this issue to bed.

Thx for the info, you explained the basics far better than any tire shop or videos I've seen so far..Your car looks awesome/ color + wheels. I actually was using the extra tape on my spacers for some years now, Was just something that came to mind one day in my garage. You proved that it works!!

Brilliant vid Tim. Only just twigged this week that the E39 wheels I put on my 850i 8 years ago are 74.2 hub size. Yes, eight years ago!!! A £10 set of aluminium rings went on today in about 25 minutes. I drove it waiting for the light shuddering at 60mph; it never came, I looked down, I was doing 80mph. Brilliant, I'm chuffed.

Hi Timm, I've been having a heck of a time getting a shimmy out of my '95 840ci...replaced brembo calipers, bought new control arms, rebalanced the AC Schnitzer wheels/tires using proper ACS aluminium adapter/7mm spacers, nothing fixed the problem... Turns out I had flat spotted 3 of 4 tires, since I don't drive my E31 nearly as much as you do! Always do a road force balance at your tire shop, and if the numbers are bad, your tires (new or not) may be the culprit! These tires are only 2 years old with about 75 miles on them, and they're ruined. Usually you can run them for 20 miles and get them back into round, but depends on tires and compounds... These are not healing themselves, even with the car on the lift for a month...better, but still not smooth. And bobbles worst around the usual 55-60 MPH range.

Great video, beautiful car,, I know it’s a old video but what kind of yellow tape you used on the hub itself to achieve tight perfect fit ? I’m running wide aftermarket wheels at the rear on my F30 335i, (285/30/19) I am experiencing slight shimmy at the rear of the vehicle around 70 mph but nothing through the steering wheel I thought I look into the wheel hub fitment more closely and also a tire pressure, right now is at 35psi. Again Great, video great car.

Hey Tim, Great video and website, helps me a lot! Wondering if you could clarify something from the video I was confused on. At 4:20, you mentioned the ET on your wheels are 13mm, but you have 10mm spacers, so ET = 3. And you said that the 840 was between 5-15mm. But when you show your page at 5:00 and the e31 shows the offset to be 10-19 /15-20. Also why are there 2 different measurements? Thanks for the help. Dayal

Sure no problem. I have read this webpage (love the detail of your whole website btw!). I just want to clarify. I have a new staggered set of style 37 18" (ET 13 fronts and ET 25 rears). I went from the style 8 16" (ET 15 all round) . I want to have more of a filled arch look like you have, hence the spacer question. Based on your table on the webpage, the only spacer I can use would be 3mm on the fronts (to be within the 10-19 specified in the table) and 10mm spacer on the rears (to be within 15-20 specified in the table). Would this be correct? If so, what else could you recommend in order for me to fill that arch? Thanks again

Timm I have M parallel 18' wheels on my '94 840CI and on occasion I get the shimmering. I'm not too versed in cars but do you think that possibly the original owner (before me) put spacers on that were not the correct size? Also I notice that at high speeds (70mph) my ABS/traction control light comes on..dealer said it was becuase the wheels are too big for the car and not meant to be on the car. Hello Vassilis, that speed range means that the front axle is NOT affected - it is a problem with the rear axle, so don't waste time and money at the front end! The problem could be one of the output shaft joints failing: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=EF82-EUR-11-1998-E31-BMW-840Ci&diagId=33_1123
