Replacement of the engine rear crankshaft seal (Rear Main Seal) on a 1972 R75/5. This procedure is similar to all Airhead models from 1970 through 1995.

Dropping the torque wrench.... Oops. Love the videos, been watching them for awhile, finally pulled the trigger on an R100. Now with my hands dirty I'm constantly going back to your videos for visual aids and tips. Really appreciate your work and dedication to the awesome bikes. Subscribed.

Chris...I think I am missing something here. The part of the vid about replacing the rear main seal is missing. The vid goes from heating and removing the flywheel to pulling the oil pump cover to reinstalling the flywheel. no vid for replacing the o ring or anything about the rear main seal...I'm confused. BTW Thanks for all you do for us here in internet land.

I will be installing a new rear main seal in a /6 within the next few weeks. I've made myself a note to record the seal installation procedure for you. Thanks, Chris

yes fell for the crankshaft problem when I did my first BMW back in the late 60's ..fitting a leaky main seal ...had to pull the L/H cylinder and sump off to relocate the rear thrust shim ...never forgot that day PITA also we used to fit clutch bolts back in to get flywheel off ...for TDC used to get flywheel with the OT in the window before removing it

No, I have not had time to do the /6 yet as we are waiting for cylinder heads. I should be reassembling that bike in June.

Looked like there was a index/punch mark on the flywheel and the crank right beside your paint mark. Not sure if you made them too and since I have yet to take mine apart I can only assume they are the factory index marks. Just an observation... Great video!

Wouldnt say it was too tricky to replace the seal. But I had to download this just in case it was some trick to ease the plundering(buy the tool! easy as it could be then!) , took 1,5hour with slow net to download this,p and then its only the flywheel on and off. Assembly and reassembly of the flywheel. Then burn the starter. That should be the name of this video.

Chris what is the part number for the replacement battery cables?

Hi Chris, with the different flywheel assembly from my 1982 R100RT, is it easier to put the seal in with the bit that goes on the end of the crank removed - I think it's called the guide. Then tap the guide onto the the crank / into the seal? Thanks in advance 👍

Chris, Love your videos! I am restoring a R75/5 -71 and just watched this video. How do I know if I have forced the crank too much forward? I dont feel any problems when twisting the crank but did remove the flywheel without blocking the rotor. Should I be worried? Greetings from Malmö, Sweden.

Are you still on the intertube so I can ask a 1982 R65ls flywheel question? This channel is so helpful. I take my tablet to the garage for reference.

Thanks but I pay the same for BMW parts that you or anyone else pays = Retail. Therefore there is no profit to be made in BMW parts sales. Besides, I am far too busy with service but thank you for the suggestion, Chris

Hi Chris, Do you have a video of you replacing the seal? I've read that it can be a little tricky to do.

that rear seal seems to have been lost somewhere or another.... oil pump seal looks to be a piece of cake. I don't know about the rear main seal though.
