I just removed my starter motor (2004 BMWR1150RT). I partly removed the foot plate (everything but the gear shift connector). I used the tools supplied in the BMW tool kit. It took 1 hour, including removal of the driver side tupperware. It is definitely a do it yourself job.

Inspired. Already purchased and received a new starter, looked up the replacement in the manual, but SEEING you do it put me at easier ease. PLUS, DUDE-the extra battery in the front left fairing?! STEALING that and already thinking of wiring diagram! Thank you VERY much from NYC. Tunes are great too!

I've been driving myself crazy with issues on my bike running smoothly. In 5 seconds you fixed it. I just changed my battery and it ran like shit. I thought it was bad fuel or bad injectors. The little tip about seating the throttle body cable correctly was spot on. I went out there between innings of the Asteos Yankee ALCS and sure enough that damn cable was off. Saved me removing the injectors or a Throttle body rebuild. I know you're long on to other projects but thanks.

My R 1100 S has 60000 miles on it and then I believe that is the 1st starter gone new battery and it's progressively gotten worse to only click click.......... 23 years later and the bike is definitely not always been in a dry storage storage so I guess that's pretty good!! Appreciate the mention of the brand Valleo.. Like to order from smaller businesses but found that same starter $55 Delivered from eBay.. Should have by Wednesday ...we're running out of good weather here.. In Oregon and it's been kind of a piss poor summer really only a couple of hot days but Hope and the fall is a long one or I'm not getting that many miles out there.. Currently riding R 1100 S e and R1150R TY350 Yamaha Trials.. I can say I think I'm the only dude riding in R1150R BMW 2 dialysis treatment every Time 🙏🙏 Appreciate the detail wrench size et cetera very helpful ..

Chris, I'm pretty sure I just lost the starter on my 9,700 mile 1150RT. Lugged down with good battery, then just quit and smoke started coming our from under the tupperware. In your opinion, did the smoke possibly come from the starter dying, or could I be looking at a much bigger problem. Thanks for posting your videos. They're great.

Thanks for the video, it came in handy. My starter wasn't disengaging on start, you could hear it spinning up with the motor then releasing with a noise. I pulled the starter then pulled the starter head off and used brake cleaner to get all of the dust clogging up the solenoid. After a bit of grease in a few places I re-installed it and it worked fine. One thing, I was able to get to the bolts from not behind the rear fork but from a gap between the foot guard and the muffler with a universal joint at the socket end. This way I was able to use only 2 8" extensions, it was about a 25 degree angle so the it was still tight. One question.. when taking the chassis plastic off.. I had 1 longer screw than the rest, where does that go?..

Thanks Chris. I have this job to do on my 2005 R1150 GSA Adventure. 81000km on the odo. My battery died after the battery tender charger quit and I didn't notice. New battery time. Tried to crank the engine with my boats 12V battery after removing the dead bike battery. All I get is the solenoid clicking like mad but no spinning of starter. Could the starter be 'locked up' like some automotive starter motors have been known to do? Access is a bit easier with the Adventure. I'll try and pull the starter tomorrow. I'm in Australia, BMW here want $1050 for an OEM unit only available from Germany. Can these be rebuilt by an auto electrician? Love your down to earth no bullshit approach to BMW's Cheers William.

They said my plugs were fouled and I pulled them and they look almost new. Starting with two coils and starter first. Then a fuel pump. They said the fuel pump was weak. Whatever, please advise. Now. it did run and start, the battery died, recharged (battery Tender) shows full charge still did not start.Replaced the battery (dead Cells)...still same. Is there a reset that has to be done? Mine is a 2004 like the one in the video, just replaced the battery 2 weeks ago, and now I see the starter acting up a bit, and should of taken the starter and cleaned it, noticed on forums is common to get the clutch dust kind of making in it misbahave, nothing a bit of WD40 wouldn't solve. Reading on forums, some of those bikes running over 120k on original starter, mine is only 44k, so I will have to try that first. I would think that the newer models, than, are not prone to the clutch disk dust issue, as mine is.

I brought my car to the dealership because there was a fender bender and needed bodywork. The workers took the car apart and now the car wont start and they wont take any responsibility for it claiming that the starter coincidentally broke while at their shop. I've never had an issue with the starter. The engine won't turn over and it makes a sound like the battery is dead. My question is whether starters just break suddenly and if there is any way to prove that they are at fault. They make it seem like there is no way to prove that they mishandled the repair. It seems like they can just break anything they want and have their customers pay for it. It doesn't matter that the car ran perfectly going in and now wont start. Please give me a little insight as I don't know much and would greatly appreciate your response. Is there anything I can do? questions I can ask? or things can show that they are responsible? The car's not even all the way put together but they're certain that it has nothing to do with the function of the starter.

Hi Dawn, starters and any electrical component can be damaged from the impact of a crash. The failure is not always evident and an electrical issue can arise after the crash. It is possible that the impact caused damage to the binding of the magnets in the starter. Starters fail. I'm not saying that's what happened in your case just offering my opinion... 4 years later. Sorry, I did not see your comment until 25 Sept 2018. I hope your problems are over. take care.
