They've done it boys.. They combined all the knowledge of their trial and errors over the past 15 years starting with the N54 up til now, with what they learned from Toyota to make what could possibly be the best "stock" turbo I-6 of all time (so far).

Bmw definitely knows what they’re doing. The s58’s tuning potential sounds extremely promising. It’s still going to be hard for me to get over the glorious high revving soundtrack of my S65 though! A v8 revving to 8500rpm just tickles me the right way 😏

4:36 what makes a true dry sump is that it must have a separate tank to hold the oil and almost none sits on the oil pan , hence the name “dry sump” ... And it usually have 2 or more drain plugs .. 1 for the tank and 1or 2 for the oil pan . If it’s doesn’t have a separate tank , then technically it is not a dry sump.

@@FQ1998 - I have a technical pdf file on both these motors. A closed deck block is where there is no coolant flow from the head to the block - the block is much more rigid (like a diesel b lock). There are so many changes to the S58 motor whilst it might appear very similar to the B58 - there is only 10% common elements. 90% is different from the injectors, the sump, oil pump system, cooling system, pistons etc etc. virtually no comm on elements in other words.

No what's really confusing is if you go get a bottle of 10W60 oil at a BMW dealership it's still branded "twin power".. I can see the logic in using that phrase to describe applications for both twin turbo and twin scroll single turbo but stamping it on a bottle of their own oil that they only recommend for NA motors is actually kind of concerning tbo. A BMW dealership did though put the wrong oil in my car once because they were all out of the correct oil so nothing surprises me much anymore.

And no doubt - even though I prefer the V10, the s58 is a marvellous engine. Wonder what BMW could squeeze out of this block if they would combine it with an integrated starter alternator & electric auxiliary compressor like Mercedes does in the M256 😜 Guess that‘s the next step in evolution...

The B58 has a Twin scroll turbo which is not twin turbo either. Twin scroll just means the system uses a single turbo fed by dual cylinders. Twin turbo S58 motor has two individual turbo chargers. S58 will have Forged internals which allows for greater more efficient air forced thru the motor with greater strength also. Something the B58 does not have due to its cast aluminum internals. People need to stop believing they can buy an N or B motor as in the 340i / Supra and make it an S motor as in the M cars without rebuilding the motor. www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/aqa2l6/bmw_s58_has_different_borestrokedisplacement_84mm/?

Im as big a BMW fan as any, but BMW lost their way long ago and started doing things beyond what made them so great. The E46/E92/E60 M cars were the last if the greats. Newer BMW’s are a lot of technology, which BMW doesnt do well anyway. And the cars are getting bigger and less capable for those of us who track and auto x. 0-60 times mean nothing to a true driving enthusiast IMO. And they are going to prove extremely expensive to fix. I mean, TWO HPFP’s? Ask any early adopter of the N54/55 how well the original HFPF’s did.......those crazy Germans.....

I definitely agree they've lost their way to an extent. But I disagree that they're less track capable. There are lots of F8X owners who have built track spec M3's/M4's that have been shown to keep up with cars well above its league like GT3RS's, McLarens, etc and have also put down some seriously quick lap times. On the Nurburgring, COTA, Spa, and many local tracks as well. The S55 also utilized dual HPFP's and I cant recall there being any issues with this setup.

Seems to me the B58/S58 are more similar than N55/S55 was.. Considering the base B58 also has a forged bottom end and closed deck block and both B & S58 are based on same block family. S58 Is Basically a factory hotrodded B58 that's been destroked , twin turbo charged instead of single and better flowing head. Yes the S engine still sounds like crap and I feel it is due to stock twin turbo manifold. I've heard a S55 with aftermarket manifold and big single turbo and it sounded just like a 2jz. Heck just mod a B58 car and be done . 7k rpm is enough and I'll take thicker cylinder walls of B58.
