I'm transcribing a comment I made on another post about the M12/13 BMW engine: "In 1997, when I was working with Gordon Murray at McLaren, developing the F1 GTR, I was one of the fortunate to be invited to a demonstration of the BT52s that run and won the 1983 championship. The demonstration was presented by the mechanics and also some of the engineers involved with the development of the car and engine at that time. I was one of the present who asked about the myth of using old engine block and the hp values and I was surprised when the Germans started laughing. They asked me why would they use old blocks if they could choose a much better quality cast to work with and that the myth of using old block was just it, a myth, that was no one really knows how it got started. Also, the engine never run more than 900HP during a race. Even in qualifying mode. They tried several times more than 4 or 4.5 bar of boost but it would break almost immediately. That myth started because one day there was a filming crew at the BMW facilities during on of the tests and they were running a lot of boost and the dyno was only scaled to 1000HP. During the run of the engine the pointer hit the top of the scale just before the engine exploded, but what was said by the reporters was something like the engine more than 1200HP! I'll always cherish very much those days and all the memories."

What is your identity to establish your credentials? I thought Paul Rosche himself claimed that they used old blocks with 100k miles. I believe he claimed this on his memoir.

I have read in Racecar Engineering that they tested stock block, but could not get it to hold more than 500hp.... And it was the marked department who come with the story of using stock used blocks laying in the rain to get the "stress" out of them... They probably couldn't see the difference anyway🤣🤣🤣

Not sure if it was the Beyond The Grid pod cast or a vid on youtube, but an engineer from that time said that with modern engine management and fuel systems they could easily get double the power they were making in the 80's. The interviewer asked "You mean you could make over 2000hp?!" A: "Oh ya for sure, easily. And using the same boost." The Hart engine manufacturer learned how to cast an entire engine block and head as one piece. This way they didn't have to worry about stretching head studs lol 🤯 I didn't even know that was possible, with all the machining you'd need to do to a new engine...

It's a shame modern BMWs aren't as robust as this engine was. Imagine if they had used 2 smaller sequential turbos, like Mazda did for the FD RX7 - they might have killed off the lag and had maybe not as powerful an engine, but one that could reliably finish.

It is a myth that they used used engine blocks. All of the f1 cars from early 80s could develop around 1200 HP, but only for one lap after that those engines are scraped.
