BMW R1150RT John Gemi chip installation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

John Gemi chip installation on a BMW R1150RT motorcycle. The process for R1100RT should be the same.
In this video I don't show very basic things on purpose. Such as taking screws out of the Motronic unit and putting the cover back on it, taking the fairings and the tank off etc. If you don't know how to do that - don't mess with the chip, ask someone else to do that for you.
I mentioned Clymers manual page 316 - how to take the Motronic unit off the bike. I don't own a Haynes manual, so am not sure if the info is there and on what page, sorry about that.
At this moment (end of 2017) John Gemi doesn't have an online store. If you wish to buy the chip, search for him on Facebook, send a private message, he will tell you how to purchase it. No one had any issues with transactions so far.

I installed this about 3 weeks ago and OMG... it's as if I have a new bike! It's absolutely incredible the difference this has made. I have a BMW R1150RT 2003 and it's as if it's been supercharged...with better fuel consumption. John, is a genius and it was a real pleasure doing business with him. One thing to look out for when installing this is the quick release fuel connectors - the BMW ones are exceptionally fragile (and should never have been installed in the first place) and indeed in my case, they broke. I've since replaced them with stainless steal connectors so either be very careful taking the tank off, or just invest in some decent connectors)!

ALWAYS use a grounding strap when working on a circuit board. Tiny electrostatic discharges that you can't detect can and will damage an IC chip. Very often, that damage won't manifest itself until well after the discharge event.

@dmaineac for us novices how do you suggest we ground things when changing the chip?

If you have a Motronic coding plug in your fuse/relay box, pull it out. John's chip didn't run well in my 2004 RT until I talked to him about it and he told me to remove it.. It looks like a relay, and is color-coded. Mine (USA) was pink. Hope This Helps! -Spinnah

Increases performance, improves fuel consumption and the engine overall runs smoother. Find John Gemi on FB - he has detailed power curve graphs on the page.

Are you running factory exhaust, airbag & filter? Is the chip programmed to meet how your bike is configured, or does it come preprogrammed and the Motronic makes adjustments based on those factors?

I'm running all factory standard and the chip is pre-programmed for that setup. Before sending me the chip John had to know if it's 1100RT or 1150RT and its year of manufacturing. He then tailored the chip for that particular bike. Motronic then picks it up and runs by its settings.

Based on John's fueling maps, instead of the very lean factory maps. Every time the ECU loses power (battery disconnect, for example) the ECU needs to know the throttle position. It will either "learn" this after several miles of operation, or you can do the throttle position reset.

I would put some serious love on the underside of your seat, fairings and tank - damn that bike is nasty and eventually corrosion is going to cause either an electrical or mechanical failure. My dirt bikes are cleaner than that rig...

You're right, it looks like it's 60 years old. The bike was kept outside for a few years by the previous owner, hence its state. I've given it a bath of ACF90 and replaced a mile of harness since.
