I had an R80GS with a 32 litre tank. Brilliant for interstate touring taking in some backroads from Melbourne to Canberra. Shaft drive, totally reliable bike very flexible in terms of your riding style at any given time fast, slow or cruise. Guzzi V85tt most direct competition.

@@RaoulMooyaart Very hard to get your hands on one in Melbourne, Australia. I know of one person who rode one overseas, came back here, bought one and is still waiting for delivery after over 6 months. From what I've seen in reviews, I think they'd be pretty similar to my R80GS which is why I like them so much. Just a big but not too big twin, shaft drive, good low to mid range power that can handle dirt backroads. Get a 700 Tenere if you're into more demanding off-road riding. Guzzi comes with shaft drive and a centre stand and just likes to lope along.

Looking forward to your next videos. I can see you've got the SW-Motech pannier rail. I've had my Urban GS since Christmas (I ride everyday) and went for the unit garage waxed canvas panniers but beginning to regret as their just not that practical. thinking about getting an aluminium topcase. Do you use the "Legend" panniers and what did you use for your trip to Morroco?

Thanks for your comment. I actually went with the standard BMW panniers and rack because of the waterproof lining - I figured i would inevitably end up leaving a cover behind. I’m heading to Morocco in mid April. Although I will be doing some camping I’m planning on packing ultralight. I’m thinking of just bringing a kriega r20 backpack and the kriega 30L tail bag.

Hi Raoul: (Not only) After watching your videos, I purchased a used 2018 model 8 weeks ago: am absolutely thrilled! I have put 2300 km on it since, and feel so well on this bike after a long break :-) What made me react to your video: you talk about what you would want to change: I don't observe the oil usage but after I last year rented a stock Urban GS for 3 days before purchasing one, I found those 3 upgrades really essential, and maybe this is interesting to people watching this video:1 Rear shock (really unworthy for the price of the bike, maybe this got improved in the 2021 version), 2 Tachometer: nice to have but gear indicator!: since 5th and 6th gear do not distinguish that much at 60mph/ 100km/h, really helpful there, 3 rear mudgard: I have not had a ride on my own bike in rain, but on the rental, I was covered in dirt after 20km of rain, what a mess, a mudgard is a must. That I have found a used Urban with these upgrades, is another story :-) I plan on adding a pannier rack, and potentially crash bars. Then: pillion comfort is not great (this may not play a role for many Nine T owners, but I want that option), so lower passenger footpegs and a higher/comfort seat are on the list as well, and then it feels I want to ride this thing for the next 100k km. Safe riding!

So glad to hear you’re enjoying your Urban G/S. I must say I’m still getting as much enjoyment out of mine 3 years later as I did on the first day I bought it. Nothing comes close to it in terms of looks, feel, power and manoeuvrability. I had originally planned to upgrade the suspension to make it taller for off road use but decided against it and bought and restored an XT500 from 1981 for off road use. I plan on upgrading the rear shocks to Ohlins and installing a cartridge system at the front to improve overall comfort at some point. Other than that maybe swap the exhaust out for a decat

@@RaoulMooyaart Great to see you still watch your comments :-) Oehlins are definitely premium upgrades but at least in Germany, they will set you back ~3k EUR (front & rear), hence I better not even start thinking about it. Bilstein could be an alternative...; Decat: We see decat cross pipes in many Triumph customizations; while they may be fun in terms of sound and even a little performance, they ain't happening on the continent :-) you never get road legal approval...All the best!

I picked up a brand new 2018 UGS and now have 5000 km on it. I really have fun and a smile every time i ride it! I i stalled the Ohlins front and back and built a custom carry rack to install a domineti top case and be able to carry my clothes , tent and sleeping bag so i could do a few road trips out to Nelson BC last summer. Other mods i installed are a skid plate, hand guards but soon to add my Roto pax 1 gal, 20mm risers, BMW tank bag and a MRX wind screen. My only complaints about this bike are that i wished it had another gear for when on the hwy and that the foot pegs were a bit further forward (they hit your shins at stop) and maybe that the back brake could be adjusted higher to make it easier to use for when your weight is back and your descending hills off road but other than that its one of the funnest bikes i have ever owned. Previous road going motorcycles i have owned include Honda 82CB 900 super sport, 85 Kawasaki Ninja 600, 86 Honda VFR750, 96 Honda ST100, 86 Honda 1100 Shadow, 91, TS 200 Suzuki, 96 Honda XR600 baja kitted, 200, 2015 KTM 990 SMT. But the funnest bike of them all to just throw a leg over and ride around town is my BMW UGS. I am 57 yrs old and as a former MX racer i Wanted a bike that could atleast take me down a forestry road to get me in the bush a ways or up a mountain. The UGS is not Not suitable for anything more rougher than that bit could be abused from time tomtime to get through more serious stuff if you really had too. Its really just to sweet a bike to want to thrash. Surprisingly the UGS gets way more compliments curbside than any other bike i ever owned. Sounds nice without being overly obnoxious as well. A no brainer if you want a shorter bike that's easy to throw a leg over and that feels exceptionaly confident in turns and that has plenty of torque and usable pleasing power from bottom to top! Take stability control off and the power and acceleration are very impressive without being over the top ridiculous. I honestly would have bought one years sooner had i known it would be so much fun

Sounds like you’re really enjoying it. I would love to feel the difference of online shocks over stock, I’ve heard they’re pretty transformative. A lot of people in the uk have them as second bikes but I see my UGS as a very competent tourer, and as you say lots of fun to throw the leg over on

My R1100GS, which I bought with 4,000 miles on it in 1995, didn't stop using oil until it had reached 30,000 miles in 1998. I sold it with 95,000 miles on it. You need a main stand to make sure you don't overfill the oil. It's very easy to think the level is lower than it is.

@@RaoulMooyaart Sorry, missed your reply as I didn't have the notifications on. Remedied that situation. I used to put the GS in the garage on its side stand as soon as I got home. Twenty minutes later, I put it on the main stand. I'd then check the oil level in the morning. My oil consumption was 500 ml for every 1,000 miles. After 30,000 miles, it was more like 400 ml for 5,000 miles. I used to change the oil at 3,000 miles [well, sometimes], so I didn't have to top up. Edit: beautiful house.

Absolutely normal for the boxer engine to consume oil for about ten to fifteen thousand kilometres , then miraculously settle down and go faster. My big complaint with this bike was the truly horrible harsh suspension, it had little compliance to travel on australian roads, changed the rear with a Wilbers and a cartridge conversion in the forks, big difference.

  • @RaoulMooyaart

eternal learner some good advice. What suspension did you use from Wilbers. Do you not rate ohlins?

@@RaoulMooyaart The Wilbers rear that raises the rear ride height approx 25-30mm, rebound adjust damping only and went for a 160 rated spring which was a mistake, a 150 will be better for my weight i.e 85kg. The fork kit is an Andreani. Do i like Ohlins ? yes, another of my BMW's has Ohlins front and rear but i punted for Wilbers on the Turban. If i was to go through the exercise again i would likely go for the Ohlins Nix 22 fork cartridge kit. The Wilbers fork cartridge kit is extravagantly priced due to the fact that it comes with it's own fork tubes. Also had the seat re foamed and covered as a Wunderlich seat, 20mm risers, bark busters and so on. cheers.

Axell Hernandez it’s a surprisingly good for nipping through traffic. Even with the barkbusters and engine guards on, the length of the bike and weight distribution mean you can get it though some tight places. I commute into central London daily and rarely find myself getting stuck behind traffic
