    So, there are two selectable modes for the HSC. T2T has his set to manual. It won’t engage unless he forces it to. I have mine set to automatic, it will engage whenever the bike senses an incline, and it’s stopped. You can disengage hsc by grabbing a handful of brake and releasing from either mode. You can also give it some throttle and release the clutch to go in either mode to overcome the hsc. When you are in automatic mode, you can also engage hsc on flat surfaces manually. When I’m on a downhill slope and stopped, I will usually disengage hsc manually before I move forward. On an uphill slope, I tend to leave it engaged, and give her some gas and go when it’s time. The lean angle sensor is supposed to sense how much hill you are on and apply the rear brake accordingly. It seems to work fine on my 2020. I’ve never been concerned about rolling back into a car, and it’s never released until it should. Maybe there is an electronic adjustment for it at the dealer? Anyhow, it’s one of those features that I’ve never needed, but I grin every time I use it. God, I love this bike.

    Thanks for all the input, very helpful. My point is targeting new riders they probably don’t know how to use it correctly or better yet don’t know how to properly use the rear brake, clutch and throttle to pull away on a hill. For those of us who know how to ride, this isn’t an issue. I spoke with a few people that had the same experience of the HSC letting go early with no inputs from the rider.

    The whole point of the HSC is that it's a safety feature! It operates using the rear brake, it's a Hill saftey feature, if you're having issues with it disengaging that's normally a rider fault, or in some cases I understand it coukd indicate that your rear brake pads need replacing. Riding on tight very steep incline european city and mountain roads the HSC is invaluable, especially on a fully loaded bike when touring .

    I only use it to hold the bike in place on inclines. I've tested the HSC on many occasions with different degrees of incline and it is a bit random. Sometimes it releases too early, sometimes too late and sometimes perfect. Too late meaning I have the clutch released and throttle going the bike wants to go but the HSC holds the bike for a few more seconds before releasing. Overall, it's a good system to have and is helpful in some situations. However, I always put my money on using the rear brake to manually hold me in place while I get the bike's forward momentum going then disengage the rear brake and off I go....WEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Important thing is to ride, have fun and be safe.

    @@Texas2Tires what you describe just isn't correct. HSC is on the bike as a safety aid/feature. Would you expect bike lights or the braking system to work hit n miss style? I've ridden a lot of different BMW models with HSC and have never experienced what you describe. Your bike would have been back to the dealership to be sorted out if it were mine, I'd say it has a HSC fault as it's just not a hit n miss now and again , may be it will work today thing a buyer expects or BMW applies to bikes. A GSA or 1600 with 2 people and all the associated gear and luggage can easily exceed $50000 and the rider has responsibility for their pillion rider(often a wife or partner). HSC can be vital to many riders in numerous road situations. The suggestion that you just have to live with it having a mind of it's own and working now and again😲 NO WAY.

    @@vacoas04 It works for how I use it. I just prefer using the rear brake for the take off portion. I don't have to ride the clutch as much. Lights aren't a good comparison as they are either on or off "0 or 1" device. The HSC is calculating incline, clutch and throttle inputs to determine when to release. I've also heard from others that have experienced this hit or miss HSC. Because the HSC is relying on software and human inputs, it's never going to be 100% for each rider. Perhaps mine and other's HSCs do have an issue, but my bike is out of warranty, so not going to spend hundreds to fix something I don't really use anyway other than holding the bike in place, which it does fine.

    @@Texas2Tires the lights work through the Canbus the same as all the other electronics on BMW's, nothing is just on and off. The HSC settings are via the TFT menu's, so same thing! Would hit n miss engine modes be installed by BMW or may be hit n miss traction control options? I need to know that when my RS or any HSC equipped bike is on a wet nose bleed high and steep mountain road in the middle of nowhere far from home that HSC wasn't a BMW may be may be not addition. It must work for me and many other's, my personal and other's experience is that it does. (Only prob I've known of is re excessive rear brake pad wear.)

    I have the same issue on my Connected App. Exact same as you. Here in San Francisco I need and use the Hill Holder at many times in traffic and at a light. I use the manual mode squeezing hard to initiate it. The first couple of times was tricky rolling off, giving too much gas and then releasing. So I’ve adjusted to go real easy with gas and slow clutch. I never roll backwards. And these are some steep hills! Good video.

    You definitely have some steep hills there. Mine usually works fine but I always have my foot on the brake just in case. On occasion, mine has disengaged too early. I give it a little throttle haven’t even begun to let the clutch out and the HSC lets go. Not a big deal as I’m ready with the brake. However a new rider would most likely have an issue.

    I purchased my 2023 RS in May and the speed limit indicator worked fine until my last ride in December 2023 when I noticed it was displaying in km"s. Checked my app and it was set on mph and was wondering why. Guess I will see when I take it out for the first ride of 2024 but not sure when that will happen as our temps have been dipping down in the minus 25 degrees and a lot of that white salt brine solution they are using now on our roads.

    My '23 doesn't work quite like that. The hill holder won't release until the you overcome the braking force applied by the hill holder. How much throttle you need to overcome the braking force also varies by the steepness of the hill. On a mild slope, it works rather well as you don't have to be harsh on the throttle to get it to move. But, on a steep hill you really have to abuse the clutch and use a lot of throttle to get it to release without killing the engine. Very annoying and can be dangerous if the cage behind you isn't paying attention when the motor quits because you were too easy on the system. On a steep hill I will use it to hold the hill when stopped, but when taking off I will disengage the hill holder with the front brake and start up the hill the old fashioned way. Hold the front brake as you release the clutch, when the front end dips a bit, release the front brake and away you go.

    Thanks for the input. You’ve outlined really well how this system could be a safety issue for a new rider that doesn’t yet have the skill of pulling away the old fashion way. There are a couple of really steep hills around me that have stop signs leading on to a main road that doesn’t have a stop sign. When you finally get the clear you have to really abuse the clutch / throttle to get it to go and to boot it’s a sharp right hand turn. I don’t think a new rider could navigate that situation properly.

    My 2023 RT does the same speed limit thing. I just turned it off until I hear they (BMW) have fixed it.

    Nice review of the brake system btw. I think of it more as a parking brake. Somehow I managed to survive 40 years without one. @@Texas2Tires

    T2T, if you could demonstrate holding the front brake with your foot for a launch that would be awesome. JK love your videos, and I wish I had your weather. We aren’t supposed to be out of the single digits for a week in MI. Wind chills around -20.

    Same problem here with the connected app showing the incorrect speed for the road. Hopefully they will sort it out soon. It's very annoying. I use the HSC in the same way you do and in fact out of interest was told on a recent course (In the UK we have a course called Bikesafe delivered by police riders) that this is how the police ride now. Previously they used what came to be called the Hendon shuffle which was the way I was taught 30 years ago as well. (into neutral, left foot down, right foot on the brake - Hendonwas the location of the traing school for police). Now they pretty much all ride RTs and use the HSC instead apparently. I have the RS as well, mine also all blacked out like yours. I do need to fit a rear spoiler like yours I think and a little screen / wind deflector as well before my next long trip. Minus 1 here today so no riding for me though a lot of other bikes are out on the roads. Hopefully will warm up soon, (its more the ice on road than the cold that puts me off). Go safe.

    Thank you for sharing. I feel more comfortable using the rear brake on really steep hills. HSC for smaller inclines and for resting the hands, legs etc. While waiting for the light to change. Our police here also ride RT-P. In fact next month we have our police rodeo here in Central Texas where the police compete against each other on slow speed skills. I’ll be attending and shooting some video for sure. The police officers have really good skills on those RT. I didn’t know this, before talking with one of the officers, but the RS has a longer wheel base than the RT, which in theory makes the RT more maneuverable than the RS.

    I’ve posted elsewhere that i can’t get mine to work (manual). Do I need to be in gear with clutch in to active it? I’ll try the auto setting on the way to work tomorrow.

    Sorry to hear that. Did you try it on an incline in first gear? Did you squeeze the brake really hard then release? If you’ve tried all that then I would take it to the dealer especially if it’s still under warranty.

    I got it on Amazon. It was about $30 and really helps a lot to get rid of the buffeting.
