BMW R 1250 GS OEM Slip on Muffler Baffle Removal

This is the second time around I’ve experimented with modifying a stock muffler for the 1250 GS. I really like how this one turned out. For anyone looking to get the same sound as an aftermarket exhaust without spending the money, this may interest you.
At least you’ll be able to see the inside of a factory slip on.
Enjoy!

Cool project and nicely done. Where I'm from a friend of mine had a guy that does this for GS owners for about $100. He'd cut it open the same way you do but no entirely sure how he did the internals and then changed the tip from a 2 piece into 1 kinda like the Unit Garage RAD. The sound my friend's GS made was really good since he also had a CAT delete. Was tempted to had mine done as well but ended up using a yoshimura exhaust from my old Super Tenere and had a custom made link pipe.

Is he running a different tune due to the cat delete?

Hello man first thanks for your video. I’m gona do this on my bike and would to know now if you get any problems with the temp and the side backpack ? Other question, you have use what paint for the muffler because I want to make it black to. Thanks for your answer and sorry for my bad English I try to do my best 😉

I have no issues with high temps. I was at first concerned about that same issue so I let the bike run at idle with my stock muffler and took a temp reading on the side of the muffler then put this muffler back on and checked the temp at idle again. Even with all of the insulating packing gone on the new muffler the outside temp wasn’t much more than stock. I’m thinking this is because it’s still a pretty thick wall stainless steel and the hot gasses are passing straight through. Also the paint I used was from Home Depot. It was a high temp spray paint rated for 2,000°f. So far it has been holding great. 👍

@@67XxD3VilxX67 no I only used the paint. It’s the rust-oleum high temp automotive paint. The muffler was already buffed up really good from doing the welding as you can see in the video. I did three coats of paint on the parts.

I wouldn’t change anything that I’ve done. I’m still impressed with the setup and have had several compliments on how it sounds. I’ve considered overriding the exhaust flapper to stay in the open position but that’s about it. Thanks for the feedback. 👍

Could this harm the engine or any other component? How safe is it for the engine to run like this?

It does sound a little more dirt bike like. Do you notice it making the tire hotter? Did it affect how the bike runs? Interesting project.

Nothing seemed to be hotter than normal. I was more concerned about the right case but it was no different than before. Bike is running great. Still no problems powering up a wheelie in second gear. I would say that it feels better but without dyno proof I’m just making it up. For some reason I did notice that the clutch less shifting up in gears seemed to smooth out a touch. Not as chunky feeling. I have no idea why 🤷‍♂️

So giving you an update on how hot the muffler gets near the tire, I used an inferred digital thermometer when the bike was hot. Engine temp was reading about 200° at idle and the inside of the can where the insulation packing was removed read 220° at the hottest and the outer side with the packing in place read 110° at the hottest. So the muffler is running at about 100° hotter on the inside but the heat seemed to radiate up rather than to the tire. The tire was cool to the touch after running at idle for ten minutes. Hope this helps.
