Very interesting. As a car detailed it’s good to see how the paint is applied in the first place!

Now I know why the new cars have no soul. The robots that build the cars have no passion.

I used run an Ecoat system for automobile parts hoods etc .

What was that last step with the stamp looking technique? End result looks like quite a bit of orange peel no?

And when these car stood at the Dealer, all have goose bumbs (orange Skin) on the painting. Even Mercedes S-Class Maybach etc.

Back in the day, they were color sanded and buffed. Now a day, you get orange peal and a big grille emblem.

Beautiful but the modern Bmw cars don’t have the same dna of their anthenat. Too much perfection! We beg for having back the soul of the old e30-e36 and e46

The robots lack passion to infuse the car with a soul. BMW is not the same since the e30 days, I wouldn't buy anything new or modern from them. I regret buying a new motorcycle from BMW 8 years ago; it has been plagued with quality problems since week one. It has left me stranded on the side of the road more times than I have fingers and toes to count.

What is the process staring at 2'13" ? That white material applied to stamped part junctions ...kind of a sealing material ....is that to damp vibrations / noise while car is running or does it have anything to do with the painting/coating process?

This is a sealer with damping properties applied on the welding spots in order to have a protection against rocks and other things that can damage the structural parts of the car's body!

That is joint sealer, it is used to keep moisture out of the overlapping seams.

Powder coat paint. It isn't the typical wet solvent paint being sprayed. The finish is less than impressive also, such heavy orange peel.

Surprised they don’t do the engine bay and jams first especially with pearls & metallics (for the overspray). Then again these are state of the art sprayers. Sad how you don’t see too many people spraying anymore.

One of the main reasons for the automation of the painting process was because of the toxic environment and risk of the explosive atmosphere. Still, a lot of people are needed for the process to be done. From technicians to engineers that will program and monitor everything. With automation, it's much safer and much more cost-effective.

The bells have halos which tells me that it is water based paint. All OEM vehicles get cured in the oven

***** to get oryginal structur, you got to aplay clearcot with thin 2 layers with smal needle nozzle combination gun. gun sata RP 1,2 clear sikkens superior fast, gun close to the suface around 10 cm with very fast movments with smal ovelay,paint with you body keep your hand stiff, works fine for me...

mazinais31 They're controlled with computer programs. Everything is done with absolute precision. Sprayers measure the exact flow rate of paint being sprayed. Those robots are programmed to move within milimeter precision. Imaging devices can see exactly how much product is sprayed onto the car and they can also see if the coat is uniform and free of imperfections.

Andre KICK yes! this is true but.. Machines are more consistent and employees are expensive and they can only work so many hours at a time before needing breaks or time off. People age, require training and can make mistakes. Machines can work for very long periods of time only requiring light maintenance and electricity. That's why machines are chosen for this job. People only do what machines can't do.

@@fakker8349 The electrostatic powder paint is baked in an oven and becomes glossy at about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. No humans painted this car, only robots.

It's industry standard E-coat or Electrocoat. You can call it a paint but it really serves one major purpose and that is corrosion protection. It contains about 10 solids which is a mix of mostly resin and pigment, and 90% purified water (RO/DI). After that stage the unit goes maybe into another E-coat stage which is typiclly recaptured e-coat from a UF system. Then the unit goes through a series of purified dips and rinses to wash away any of the excess ecoat. Unit then hits an oven for curing.
