BMW Overheating? Check this first!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

BMW's have a bad reputation for overheating, the water pump, thermostat and viscous fan usually get the blame - but check between your fans first. I have seen over-heating caused by lack of airflow a few times now and it is very easy to confuse a lack of airflow with a failing viscous coupling.
Although I show the clearing procedure on a BMW E31 840ci 8-Series this procedure is prescient for all the BMW models including the E32, E38 and E39 - even later models such as the E63/E64 can have the same problem.

Another excellent video. Thank you. I drive BMW cars more than 10 years. Always fill distilled water %50-50 and blue BMW recommend antifreeze . Also I clean radiators with soapy water every 2000-3000 km. Vaseline all hoses and check them every 6 months. I have never have problem about overheating. Also I have spare parts at the garage ready to change :)

Hi Tim, great info as always. I am using the furlough leave to kickstart my 840 restoration project which completely stalled exactly a year ago when I became ill. Fortunately, I am more or less out the other side so am trying to get on with it. Point being, I am so grateful to you because I can refer to a lot of your images on Meeknet as I cannot remember where some of the bits go! Keep well mate.

Great advice Timm.....I had to have the valley pan gasket on my 840ci replaced as it was leaking coolant. After BMW did that, it blew the radiator apart on the drive home! The dealership also wanted me to replace the magnesium valve covers because they warp and can't be machined as magnesium is flammable. I was told it is an "unacknowledged defect". At $2000 for the pair, I declined and they've been fine with new gaskets.

Good day mate. I had the issue of overheating warning message on idrive. (Bmw e60 2006 n52 525i). I check it out the coolant level.. was good. Then I check the water pump without starting the car (just on ignition), I see the flow was good and water pump is working.. I didn’t drive for couple of days.. feel curious.. then I check under the hood for a leak from thermostat.. no leak.. then I start the car with coolant cap open to check if the coolant (actually I’m using mineral water as coolant) flowing through engine and back to coolant tank ( through small hole in coolant tank).. it’s flowing.. I let the engine run almost an hour and check the temp (on dash) show around 90~94c without running ac and with ac on, temp around 88~93c. And the radiator fan works on/off when ac is off and consistently running with various speed when ac is on.. then later on, I did drive about 1/2 hour in town.. no warning msg and the temp was good.. what could the problem on the day that it shows the overheating warning.. your opinion/comment please. And by the way, on that day, the weather was too hot (36~37c) and i was driving around the city with short distance trip and also the ac was medium level..

Hey Timm, USA here was wondering if you have had this happen on your journey through BMW land? I am losing coolant. My 94 -525 came with a rebuilt transmission $2000, new radiator $900 and new shocks which can be very expensive on that car. I did the rest of this work myself. New brakes and rotors, tune up, lower control arms, fan clutch, water pump, thermostat with new metal housing tightened down the head, battery. It runs smooth as silk and handles like nothing else but it uses coolant???????????? No visible leaks or steam out the exhaust pipe. I ordered a new radiator cap just for the fun of it. I have tried to look under the air intake manifold but no visible leaks but hard to see under there. Might have to take that off next spring because it's getting cold up here in Vermont. I'm thinking head gasket but my compression test seemed good. Problem is I spend more time under the hood than driving this........ I'm actually starting to look a Lexus'. Help.

Someone in the UK had the same problem - the solution follows: Just to wind up the post with the solution to the issue. It was indeed the coolant hose running along the length of the front of engine directly under the manifold. As per the video shown earlier in the post. Most awkward part to get to, and was way beyond my level of DIY. The garage had to remove the manifold the leak was directly at the connection to the engine weak O ring and brittle connection on the plastic hose. There was also an attached hose which showed sign of wear and was also replaced. Along with that I asked the mechanic to check to see if anything else looked a bit dodgy and to replace where he saw fit. Crack case breather hose was replaced, along with 4 or 5 additional connected pipes and hoses. All parts came from BMW directly were approx. £100 The rest was labour.

My 2013 BMW 740Li lately has been having a "Engine Overheated" on the dashboard but my mechanic could not find the cause of the issue after manually checking the Coolant, radiator, thermostat, water pump and the radiator fan. the computer diagnostic also did not show any codes or warning. Prior to the engine overheated popping up, I can hear the fan starting to over work, if that's any indication. Once I pull over and let the car cool for 10-15 minutes, it will drive for a couple of days without any issue but eventually it happens. Any ideas?

Tim, you are a life saver. I have a 1991 850i where the auxiliary fan is cutting on and off. I live in Atlanta, GA, a hot place so I need my AC to work properly. So, via input from my BMW mechanic and various forums, I have decided to replace the auxiliary fan. I used your step-by-step instructions on meeknet to remove my old fan. Thanks so much. The one thing that was really a pain was getting to the bottom bolt that was holding the fan. I could barely get a wrench on it. It probably took me 1/2 hour to get it off. Just curious, any advice on how to access this bolt to make that a little easier? Use a longer wrench, take off the bottom trim on the car, or ? My new fan arrives today so I'll be doing this project the next several days. Thanks so much for your help!!!

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation OH, that's not the worst one. I took my 1998 S90 Volvo to a place once for an oil change and I showed the guy how to get the bonnet up in the service position. It had catches on the struts to hold it up. I didn't watch him all the time and so he drove the car out when he finished. I got in and drove home but noticed the hood was not down right. I stopped to try to close it and could not open it. It was completely jammed. I figured out he had slammed the hood down before releasing those catches. I went back the next day and showed it to the owner. They had a hard time prying it open and somewhat straightening it but it was just never right after that. Poor old Volvo had a hard life. No, the engine self-detonates if it really is overfilled!

Mine is having both thermostat and coolant temperature sensor issues....how do I know which is the bad one? I don't want to buy both...the engine is running cold... constantly. The heat does work most of the time...

I'm planning to get the coolant temperature sensor and thermostat Friday... hopefully that solves it....it's not good to not know if the temperature gauge is actually hot and reading cold. But my BMW has a warning light that would come on if it was truly overheating

Although you can get the coolant temperature displayed using the hidden menu system, or code the cluster to show it - it's a bit of a faff - and is something I certainly miss.

750 1997. Is it normal for the AUX fan to cycle ON and OFF when A/C is ON? I just refilled the AC system, blows really cool air now. New AUX fan. The fan starts spinning high rpm when push AC button but the fan cycles on and off. Don't know if that's normal or not..

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation so it's normal for the fan to cycle for lets say 10-15sec then off for a couple of sec then ON again? Sorry for repeating myself, just want to be sure 😄

@@estranged85 The compressor and aux fan will run until the evaporator is down to temperature - both will then cycle off. When the evaporator warms back up again they will both cycle back on. The amount of time off and on is dependant on the ambient temperature, the requested interior temperature and the fan speed.
