I fitted A K+N air filter to my MR2 and it sounded amazing. It was one of the 54i series. It was cone shaped to better sound amazing and add harmonics to my 4 cylinder and it did but it robbed low down torque and made it hard to pass an mot and after a year ... For a year though it sounded like I drove a V8. Just a really torque starved v8. ....I put the old air box back on. Luv and Peace.

It sounds really good. Im actually hearing a similar engine sound as a Porsche six cylinder.

There are many yt channels that have done dyno comparisons of air filters and none of them have found that any of the aftermarket/performance filters make a significant difference to power output and any increase in power is likely down to slight changes in other parameters. Furthermore, some aftermarket filters are not good at filtering out fine particles and oiled filters can actually contaminate the MAF sensor causing either premature failure or loss of power.

There is a reason why the BMW kit also included a larger cross-section intake duct and a new cover to increase the area where the duct joins the airbox, the filter on it's own is still strangled by the duct. Compare the area of the intake where the MAF is fitted with the duct above the radiator, the MAF housing is bigger.

With the maf area bigger the maf sensor must also grow to take advantage of the slower velocity for a given volume of atmospheric air flow to an area of lower pressure in a conduit or manifold. If the maf isn’t exposed to the total volume of air in the column that it’s designed to react to, it will indicate a low volume condition when theres actually an increase in volume and less boundary layer flow resistance and less pre throttle plate vacuum, if an old school flapper valve MAF sensor was improvised, it was effected by both the air flow’s velocity and the density (humidity and low temps made the air denser and it would move the flap more per a given throttle plate angle and some systems were programmed to respond by increasing the injector volume or dwell depending

I have installed these on all of my cars as well. What I like about them is that once you spend $50 on one of these, it will last you years to come, Just take it out every year or so and shake and knock it to spit all the garbage it catches

Seating that maf sensor properly might have helped a bit with the performance too.

In my 325i e90 n52 i just leave open the airbox with the stock filter. It's sounds insane and the engine still well protected aganist dust and dirt.

If you have watched project farm’s video, KN filter gives more air flow but get dirtier air as well

For a BMW 2010 E93 328i, is there a Reset for setting up a reminder for next Air Filter change? I didn't see that in the instrument panel menu although the mileage for cabin air filter change can be scheduled for the next 29k miles.

Hey George, I've heard the oily coating on these K&N filters can tend to block up the MAF sensor over time. Hence, some people recommend the normal air filter because of this. What's your thoughts on that? Thank you!

It had a square one but I removed it and it seems to idle better otherwise could notice any difference but this cylinder filter l think it’s larger, plus the maf is new and it’s risky, as aerosols of oil may stick to it

If you go to auto zone if you live in the US, you can order a recharge kit. Or you can go order one online or go to your nearest car store that sells K&N stuff.

If you we want to capitalise on the noise & performance gains from the K&N, a 135i back box transplant is highly recommended! You get gurgles, pops and bangs too........Hope I haven't just spoiled your next plan of action 😬

All you had to do was leave the lid off and would of sounded better

An induction cone filter doesn't make any difference really unless the exhaust system has also been upgraded

this will decrease your torque at low rpm and increase fuel consumption after 50km. the car computer will adjust can learn the intake aor flow rate.

@@GeorgeAusters George I have a E91 320d 177hp and it tends to overheat a lot. As the coolant is always running 95-99 degrees celsius when the car is driven normally, will get to them temps within 15/20 mins of normal driving. I’ve had the engine thermostat and coolant sensor Switch changed and it is still the same. One thing to note is the radiator fan comes on very late at a very low speed and does f*kall really to cool the engine down. Any ideas where I Should start looking mate ? Thanks

Never use k and n filters they let so much more dust into your engine it will be ruined.....what nonsense i always had k and n in my bmw and you really could feel the difference in response.👍

Myth, my truck has had a cold air intake (not k&n) for 40k miles 15k+ of that is all dirt road and off road. I neglected the filter at times and it’s had load of dust on it. Sent a oil sample to a lab and it came back insanely good, better than average.

k and n filter do give more air but at the same time more dirt to your engine dont use it just use bmw parts

Potential problems are oil getting onto the MAF sensor- particularly that it's very easy to put too much oil on after cleaning. Be careful.

A cone filter is NOT a better option as the factory intake is well designed and pulls in good air Cone filters ruin the MAF sensor with oil and cause all sorts of issues
