Excellent video. I'm replacing the seals on a friend's 2009 X5 and when I removed the thermostat hose I noticed the lip that holds the O-ring in place was broken off. The hose only costs USD 27+tax. Surprisingly easy repair, BMW charges around $850 for this. I could go into business for myself just doing that LOL.

Hi, Great video, thanks. I'm a complete beginner but I decided to go ahead. I just went through the process and changed the 2 gaskets. But had unexpected issues that I'd like to share Old gasket were really broken, 15 years old. 1/ the middle length bolt is very difficult to reach, because the torx wrench and 1/4 to 1/2 adaptor were too large and ... too long. I used finaly a 6 pan classic wrench that is smaller and it worked fine. 2/ to prevent the bolts and wrenches from falling in the engine, I attached to each tool a rope to secure my work and I saved time. 3/under the air filter box there is a kind of one inch half sphere rubber support that needs to be readjusted when you put back the air filter. 4/ I emptied the the coolant reservoir in separate box to avoid to have the coolant leaking too much when I open the oil radiator. It worked great. 5/ best coolant temperature is 30 to 40°C, you can check the temperature on the hidden feature #7. !! make sure the engine is cool, that means you drove less than 3 minutes to avoid heating injuries. I didn't see the above in the tutorials, hope it helps, BMW E90 325I 2007

Thanks George, just finished this job along with doing the tensioner, idler pulley and belt. As a note, i lost a 250ml of oil doing this, which given how much come out, seems about right. Mine was hurrendous, hours of scrubbing getting all the caked on oil off. Pleased to say after a nice long drive, not a leak in sight! As always, your videos were invaluable - keep it up!

when you buy the gasket ONLY buy BMW or elring. They are the ones with the new formulation of the rubber and BMW has updated the part number. Yes its 4x the cost at the dealership but these gaskets never shrink or deform like the original formula. If the package does not say MADE IN JAPAN, don't put it in or you'll be doing it again in 25,000 miles. The best thing to come out of the BMW and Toyota partnership, gaskets that actually hold oil!

I would avoid taking the serpentine belt off unless you know what you're doing. I stupidly took it off, put it back on one groove further back (towards the engine) than it should've been. Belt rubbed until it shredded, now possibly been sucked through the crankshaft seal. Might've killed my engine through exactly the fate I was trying to save it from and now I want to cry

Hey George! 2 questions for you. I flushed my coolant system a few weeks ago because the previous owner was running cheap bad quality green coolant, and I wanted to replace it with G48 blue coolant. When I flush it, there was some dark gunk in the coolant. I didn't pay much attention to it, but last Saturday I got a chocolate milkshake on my coolant reservoir and low oil warning. I diagnosed the issue to be the OFHG and the heat exchanger gasket. Do you think that dark stuff I found in the coolant when I flushed it a couple of weeks ago was oil from a bad OFHG? No coolant went into the engine (Popped the oil filter and all the oil there looks perfectly fine, plus the head looks good from the oil cap), just oil onto the coolant system. Is it ok if I just top up the oil after replacing OFHG and heat exchanger gasket? I'm dropping the oil pan in a month to change the gasket anyway, so I don't want to have to change the oil now and again in a month when I drop the oil pan

  • @GeorgeAusters

Top video on this issue with the N52 engine - if left it will leak oil and or coolant on the serpentine drive belt. So it’s fairly urgent if you have the problem. I would just add - ONLY use BMW genuine gasket to avoid it failing - the cheap ones are really bad so avoid them because you’ll be doing the job again in a few months - really. I also found that one of the aluminium bolts in the gap of the manifold can easily drop so I loosed it & put some bare copper electrical earth wire around it and then slowly loosened off completely - this of course held the bolt so it couldn’t drop - a bit like a copper earth wire lasoo. It’s a great idea for any bolt you fear may drop down into engine bay or is generally tricky to hold. This replacement is needed every 60K or less. Common issue solved in this Video. In the E60 you don’t need to remove the air box - but removing the fan gives you much more room to protect the back of your hands - good luck 👍🏼 & peace ✊🏼

Good video, question? After you open up cooling system, shouldn’t you do the purge method using the electric water pump ? To make sure it gets all the air out of the system? The one where you hold gas petal down for 12 seconds with heat max temp on lowest fan setting . Or is just fine to start an run it without doing that .
