    I have a question, I need to replace my disa valves both upper and lower, on my BMW E92 325i 2006. The car has only covered 48000 miles since new, however the car is hardly used as i travel a lot thus i fear some parts will deteriorate over time, thus renewing before needed. I have elected to use Febi Bilstein disa valves which i feel are as good as the OEM units, what nis your opinion? on these parts. As said parts i feel fail too because of non use and a case in point the water pump last year, luckily it failed at home so i could replace it without any need to be towed home. This was replaced with the same make as was removed from engine a Pireburg, not correct spelling sorry.

    If you hook up a laptop with inpa software while the disa is removed but still electrically connected, you can operate the disa and see if it is opening and closing correctly on a consistent basis. Mine looked fine and worked fine most of the time. But when testing with inpa software, i could see that sometimes it would not fully open or not fully close. So will be replacing mine with a new Febi one.

    @@GeorgeAusters Yes I will test the small disa valve with inpa too, when I get a chance. Although I believe the small disa operates at the high end of the rev range and thus sees much less wear than the big disa. So in theory it should last a lot longer than the big disa valve.

    Hi George. Excellent video! This one and the intake manifold removal have been absolutely invaluable lately! I have a 2005 130i and have been having very similar issues to you... Developed a major rough idle this month (still not resolved but I think I've found the culprit..) and then the starter died totally last week so it kinda forced the issue and the intake manifold had to come off. Starts super quick now, valeo unit is a peach. However - upon manifold removal, something was rattling around in there which turned out to be half the flap off the large DISA! yes half! Which was worrying to say the least. I had taped up the intake ports on the head to stop anything falling in - the irony was the other half of the flap was sitting inside cylinder port #4 ! The flap had cracked in 2 straight down the spindle and the spindle had cracked off too. My car is on 90k miles and so yes, these disa valves can most certainly end up in the engine! Lucky that the starter died, really, so I had no option but to take the manifold off.. It doesn't bare thinking about. I guess the car was trying to tell me something! New DISA should be here tomorrow. Hopefully that will sort the hideous rough hunting idle (I put the DISA back in without the flap just to test had fixed the starter and that everything had been reconnected ok.) I'll update you when I get the new DISA in as it might prove useful to someone, who knows. Failing that, I'm thinking vanos / check valve cleaning may be in order. Thanks again for these vids. Super helpful to see someone else do it first on exactly the same engine. All the best

  • @GrooveDigger808

    @GrooveDigger808

    2 жыл бұрын

    By the way, the hunting idle (which is now worse with the old DISA back in with no flap at all, than when half the DISA valve was still in there...) which shakes the car and feels like it's going to stall - settles right down after the initial open loop start up, completely disappears and becomes totally smooth, after 2 or 3 minutes. Very odd! No codes (except AUC sensor, bizarrely enough) I'm very keen to find out if it's totally down to the broken DISA ..

    @@GeorgeAusters So, to update.. the rough idle which persisted after replacing the broken large DISA and entire PCV system (while changing the dead starter) was caused by - an air leak. Of course. I smoke tested the intake using a £7.99 transfer pump with a cheap cigar in the input. Worked an absolute treat! found the leak within minutes, one of the PCV hoses, the oil return, was disconnected. It was a right pain trying to reach to connect this tube when putting the intake manifold back on, I had decided to connect the lower end to the crankcase first and fit the top to the PCV while repositioning the intake. That was a mistake, it was incredibly difficult to reach at that point but I thought I had managed it. However, the starter cable pulled it off as it was being refitted into place, as it was routed the wrong side of this cable, which wasn't obvious while putting the manifold back on. If you're doing this job definitely fit the top end first, the lower end is way easier to do afterwards, believe me. So it turns out the original rough idle condition was caused by the big DISA with the totally broken flap and/or the PCV, which was letting a lot of oil into the manifold, so certainly needed replacing. Running sweet again now!
