BMW N42/N46 Valve Stem Seals Replacement PART #5: Timing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Part #5 of the DIY guide for replacing valve stem seals on the BMW N42/N46 engine.
Check out my other DIY guide for more detailed information:
• BMW E46 N42/N46 Valve ...
Engine suddenly started consuming a lot of oil (6 dcl/1000 km). I had some substantial oil leaks, so I first had to replace:
- oil pan gasket,
- valve cover gasket,
- Valvetronic motor gasket
- Valvetronic sensor connector flange,
- vaccum pump o-rings,
- VANOS solenoid o-rings.
I also replaced the CCV system, but nothing fixed the oil consumption problem. Replacing the valve stem seals was the next step...

    I am putting a comment here so people cna learn from my mistake, make sure you already locked your timing for exhaust, intake and crank. Put the intake gear first, make sure you pull the chain all the way up and spin the intake gear anti clock wise as you insert this. This is to make sure that you don't leave any slack. Then do the same for exhaust by pull the chain to the top left and spin the exhaust gear as you put it back. Don't reinstall the colar screw until you put the chain tensioner back and put it to 65 nm torque. Put in the front lock tool and then put the OLD colar screws and torque them to 20nm. Remove all the timing tool locks, then do full rotation of the crank clockwise. Put all the timing lock back. They should all fall into place without much force. This means you are in perfect timing. It's time to put the new colar screw in and torque them to rhe specifications.

    If you use zip ties (or metal clips from special toolkit) to lock everything in place and just remove the VALVETRONIC bracket, as one unit you don't need to reprogram anything. When you reinstall it back, everything is in it's original position. Usual symptoms of bad valve stem seals are blue smoke when pressing the gas paddle after idle and the engine is warm. For example, pulling from red light scenario.

I think it could be a stuck lifter but I did have to wind the Vanos screw a few turns to get my camshaft locking tool out. Does my Vanos have to be reset if it was moved? It seems to have spark on all 4 cylinders. It starts from cold fine but as it warms up it’s a constant misfire. Any help or advice is appreciated. I am doing mine tomorrow with two exBMW techies. The guide is broken and there are possibly bits in the sump. Two questions though. Would you suggest doing the sump work first and putting it back together and then replacing the timing chain or leave it open while doing the timing chain. What I saw was the reverse torx bolt behind the engine support mount will be inaccessible. I guess it could be taken out first. What would you suggest? Also, the exBMW guys made me buy the Timing Chain Service tool to rotate the crank in addition to the camshaft locking tools. It has three holes and two flat pieces for measuring. Was this really required? Wish me luck though.

  • @BimmerZen

    @BimmerZen

    6 жыл бұрын

    I would suggest removing the oil sump first, then remove and clean out the oil pickup line. Make sure there are no pieces of plastic or old seals on the mesh. Also inspect the bottom part of the engine for any debris. Then put back the oil sump with just a couple of bolts to protect the inside of the engine from contaminants. Then do the timing chain and guides. When you are finished timing the chain, replace the old oil sump gasket and reinstall the sump. If anything accidentally falls in to the engine you will be able go retrieve it fairly easy. I never did a full chain replacement so I don't know this procedure or exact tools required. The manual (tinyurl.com/ybho4n8s) shows you need that timing chain service tool with three holes to release/tighten the central bolt while on full torque. Locking pin may only be used to release the remaining torque ( All the bolts are accessible via plugs in the block. Its a good idea to change the front radial seal, VANOS solenoid o-rings and plug seals while you're down there. Also don't forget to change the oil dipstick tube o-ring that seals to the sump. I plan to do a video on how to change the chain and guides and already have the new chain and guides ready, I just don't have the time to do it. Good luck and let me know how it went:)

  • @BimmerZen

    @BimmerZen

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yikes:) I'm not 100% what happens if you do that. If you didn't install the VANOS/chain and the camshaft was rotating freely, then I think the valves should be fine - the resistance is from the valves that were under spring tension when the cam tried to rotate. Best thing to do is to check all cylinders for leaks if you have the leakdown tester tool...

    @@nigellawes7902 When you unplug the eccentric position sensor, car goes in to VVT emergency mode and puts intake valves in full open position and throttle is regulated by ICV flap. Thats why engine runs "ok" with disconnected sensor. Dude, soon I will be doing the same job + replacing timing chain.. Am I right understanding that doing valve stems job first is correct and then moving on to phase 2 and replacing timing chain with guides...? Also I have heard that if the guides weren’t broken, there is no need to remove the sump. Also the same guy was releasing the central bolt just with impact wrench and without a special blocking tool with three holes...So the crankshaft was blocked with a locking tool and then the central bolt was released and chain replaced... any thoughts? :)

  • @BimmerZen

    @BimmerZen

    I never changed the whole chain so i don't have direct experience with this job. I would say that you don't need to remove the sump if nothing is broken. I would suggest removing the cams before doing the chain, so you cant damage the valves if you rotate the crankshaft. Using impact and locking pin to release the main bolt might work just fine.

    It took me about 10 hours without changing the chain. Professional technician with the right tools and a lot of experience can do it faster, probably in around 8 hours - if nothing goes wrong - which it often does on these older brittle plastic parts. I don't know how long it takes to do it with changing the chain. From what I've researched you have to remove the oil pan and make sure the balancing shafts are aligned properly (there is also a special tool for that). I would estimate it takes about 5 more hours. Oil pan can be a big PITA. You have to suspend the engine with engine support bar and drop the subframe (on E46 series at least). I've broken a bolt in the block while changing oil pan gasket it and it took me 1 hour just to get it out and cut new threads. Make sure they also change the valve cover gasket, vacuum pump seals, VANOS solenoid o-ring seals, oil level tube o-ring seal, oil pan gasket and clean out the oil pickup line filter mesh if that wasn't done before.

    Thank you! If I understand you correctly you have slight smoke coming from the engine bay area and a smoke smell in the cabin cca. 30 sec after startup and then goes away? If that is the case, then you may have to replace the vacuum pump o-ring gaskets or the valve cover gasket. After 10-15 years they get hard and oil starts leaking on to the exhaust headers. That vaporizes the oil in to smoke wich gets in to the cabin.

    Your symptoms are consistent with bad valve stem seals. There is a lot of vacuum in the intake manifold during idle which causes oil to be sucked pass the bad seals on valve stems in to combustion chamber. When you accelerate the oil burns away causing blue smoke and large oil consumption. I recommend you first change the seals and if that doesn't help go to the piston rings. It is still much easier to do valve stem seals first than changing the piston rings.

    hardworking people You have not used the timing plug PIN to fix the flywheel in advance. The first cylinder TDC part affects success or failure Share it with you

    Andy小龍 I didn't use the flywheel locking tool because I couldn't insert it from below the car. That is why I used the stick and dial indicator method to determine TDC on the first piston. It's easy to use the pin if you take the intake manifold off, otherwise it's easier to do the stick method. Once the crankshaft is in TDC you can do the timing without the pin inserted.

    I could not insert the pin even when I removed the intake manifold... I found that using a simple stick to determine TDC works just fine and it's really fast.

    @@BimmerZen hi, thanks for the videos. After installing back the cams in position, you set the crank in TDC using a stick, like a long screwdriver when it reaches highest point while turning the crank? or should set TDC in 1st cyl before installing back the cams and valvetronic? thx
