I am a retired automobile mechanical engineer. I worked in engine for 18 years. What seems to be missing here is that you have ignored the function of the common PCV valve found on every modern vehicle. The normal PCV valve is a very simple inexpensive valve on most cars, and does not include a diaphragm that can rupture, like on this BMW. What it does is restrict air flow from the crankcase at idle, but allow enough to clear the blowby gases without reducing the vacuum level too much. During acceleration, when the the intake vacuum is low, it opens up more to allow the higher blowby gases to be fed into the intake manifold. If there is a backfire on decel, the PCV valve closes. What might be a smarter modification to this BMW vehicle would be your same fix, but include an inexpensive normal PCV valve in series with your vacuum line to the intake manifold.

But remember. a ordinary pcv has to be mounted vertical and will not function laying down, that is why I don't use them , a custom T hose would be needed

@@NathansBMWWorkshop I know this is an old video and maybe you've figured it or maybe not... PCV valves are made for both vertical and horizontal locations. The valve is also spring loaded so it should close no matter which position. Also, all PCV valves need (cleaned)serviced or replaced. I only mention that because I've seen other people's videos where they don't mention that PCV's are a consumable part, that is they need replaced every 50,000 or so.

However, my crankcase is building pressure at idle faster than the port on the back of the manifold can draw. Any ideas on how to solve this? Is pushing oil or of my valve cover gasket.

Hi Nathan, first off thanks for doing all the videos. I've done alot of repairs to my BMW with your instructions and I feel good about doing them with the help of you teaching. One question I can figure out, at 415 you were going to go in with a razor knife and disconnect the vacuum housing (with the hex bolts that you had to pry off). Yours broke free before you cut it but I cant find out in any of the videos what to do with that hose that broke (I capped off the vacuum bar system as you said) but does that hose that originally connected to this piece need capped or did you just leave it upcapped? I cant seem to find this answer is all of the videos that you made. You always just cut it and seal the vacuum bar but never mention that hose that you cut again. Do I cap that or just let it dangle?

The car will not immediately start back up but will after a few minutes there doesn’t seem to be a loss of oil in the engine as well. I was told the car did not come with a cold climate pcv? Could I benefit from the delete and does this sound like a pcv issue. I have a 2001 E38 M62TU engine and am still at it based on your great work done. and...I bought the 2002 BMW X5 CCV that will have one hose connected like the 2002 BMW X5, where is the other hose from the oil catch can hooking in. I am deleting the internal OSV, and the pipe under the manifold that goes from the CCV over to the OSV and plugging the hole at front of the engine that would be going down to the OSV. I am not seeing where the second hose hooks in to the engine. I saw another similar video where he actually also used the 2002 external OSV but I could not understand that hose hook up @t if you could help me with where that second hose hooks up. If I use the oil catch can, do I need the 2002 external OSV to be hooked up and where, or just go to the oil catch can. Another thought was to tap a hole in the bottom of the oil catch can and tie it into the low pressure side of the oil filter housing with a T-Connector to return the overflow of the oil catch can to the engine. I hope you can make sense of what I am saying here Nathan. Thanks for your help.

Brittle hoses can definitely be a problem. I replaced all of mine last winter to try and fix a rough idle. Many were cracking apart when I went to remove the old ones. The valve itself can fail at almost any point, apparently. The diaphragm in it is also rubber, and can get brittle and tear.

Space - it was designed thinking it would never be replaced. Yes if you can find space its better to relocate it - bear in mind the hoses will not reach and you will need to modify both mounting brackets & hoses.

I have a 2002 BMW 530i with the plug from the throttle in the same direction as the one in this video. My CCV also has the vacuum port to the fuel rail plugged off. The fuel pressure regulator is on directly on the fuel filter, that's why the fuel filter cost $75 instead of $20. Anyways I got the car for free so I can't complain. It was leaking badly from the oil seal that seals the oil filter housing to the engine block. I'm replacing everything under there while I'm in there and going to delete the CCV system taking it out completely. I will go the catch can route, because it just makes sense to help keep everything clean. I'm just not sure on if to block off the whole on the oil tip stick or stick a old V8 valve cover style filter on there. I don't want to smell any oil at stop lights since my wife will be using it as her daily. I would appreciate your advice on that specifically and any other suggestions you might have recently come up with that were not discussed here already. I also will be adding a wire extension from the starter signal wire so it will be easier to test the starter in future when needed. I'm will use AMSOIL 5W-40 EURO oil with the WIX XP oil filter. BMW coolant with mixed with Kangen water and DEX 3 ATF for my power steering. I loved your videos I subscribed and will be following your from now on. My next project is going to be replacing the automatic transmission pan and fluid. It would be nice to have you do a video on that next please. BMW call it a lifetime fluid but that's bullshit and you know it. I know that the filter is built into the pan, so you have to buy a whole new pan. I just don't know how to refill it. Wife just gave me a plate of food, got to go now. Your awesome bro keep up the good work. Call me if you would rather chat, I'm old school and hate typing :)) 407 252 8506

+Daniel Jose Matamoros Hello you will have to block off the oil dipstick tube if you install the catch can because if you do not you will have a huge vacuum leak, on your car the trans filter is not built into the pan since they didnt start that until 2004 on the 5 series, for sure let me know if you have any other questions and i really appreciate you watching the videos.

To block off the dipstick use a new piece of hose with a bolt and clamp it at the bolt and at the dipstick so it dont leak, this is the link to my trans fluid video, kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4Z_ybh-hLvSfMY.html

+HarrisMotorsports904 Hello just install the breather on the hose going to the valve cover, and the hose going to the dipstick , dont forget to block off the vacuum hose going to the intake vacuum log,and the small vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator if your car has that one.

Nathan's DIY Garage I liked your videos, very well done. I had a problem out of nowhere, I put a new ccv valve in last year, we went to go on a trip, and there was some smoke when we 1st started it, but that was it. didn't smoke the whole way. We went to leave and it was smoking at every light, and through some lean codes.i went to autozone, pulled the air filter, and noticed the ccv was covered in oil, the dipstick line came off, i put hose clamps on it, and it was OK for about 15 minutes, then it started smoking again, but not as bad and no lean codes. I drove it home, it was all highway, it would only smoke when i let off the gas, and accelerated again. so i kept my foot on the gas a little when we would slowdown. it didn't smoke again until we got off the highway. do you think i blew the diaphragm out of the ccv? all the hoses are good, and still hooked up. I hate to pull the ccv again, think i could do the catch can, or better off plugging therm? thx

Stop messing around with that ccv it will cost you a engine, just run the catch can they are super cheap, and just leave the ccv in place and cut the lines, you must plug the dipstick tube with the catch can and the vacuum log lines going to the ccv

If its that simple, why are there companies that make these devices that will allow (I guess full functionality) e85 to run in your engine? I ended up removing the ccv system and routing a line from the valve cover port down to the ground to avoid smelling the vapors. I Sealed off the two small ports on top of the intake and put a cap on the oil return line port @ the dip stick. 6 months and probably 5 thousand miles later it seems to be runing ok. I'm no enginer- I dont know how much vacuum goes through the system but I need to know what and how much damage it might cause. # 02 E53 X5 @240k

How does the Ecu deal with not having the PCV? Does it through a code? I am in the middle of swapping my blown e39 525I motor to an E46 330I. I am plan on removing all things that are problematic and I could do away with such as the secondary vacuum pump and the back 2 O2 sensors. Also who do you use for tuning your ECU to calibrate delete these items?

Has anyone ever tried simply running high temp hose instead of the plastic stuff and moving the CCV valve a few inches out from under the intake so it could be serviced easier? Seems like you could keep the basic valve/system but use the rubber hoses to move it around a bit rather that using a catch can.
