BMW M4 DCT Explained - A DCT Transmission Tutorial
How do you drive the BMW M4 DCT? Well, let me give you the full breakdown. This is the BMW M4 DCT Explained, with a full tutorial of how to use the DCT transmission on your BMW M4. Now, this is the competition model that I borrowed from the folks at www.edmontonbmw.com/.
Within this video tutorial, I show you how to park, shut off, turn on, shift, and use the full feature set in the DCT. I also show you some of the ways you can get snagged by the DCT, as it works in a little bit of a different way than some cars today. Of course, the DCT bears some resemblance to the SMG III in my E60 M5, but it obviously behaves a little differently given just the vintage differential.
In any case, the BMW M4 Competition package with the DCT is a great car and I'm loving going through the full function and capability of this car.

    One thing not mentioned is that when in D for example, when you move to Sequential Shift Mode (or manual), the car will continue to stay in manual mode until you physically push the shift lever rightwards to bring it back to D. Also, anytime you use the +/- (stalk or paddles) the car automatically goes into manual mode and stays in manual mode until it is physically taken out of manual mode. I actually love the DCT when used with the +/- function on the stalk. Not so much using the paddles.

    VAE Tech I agree, the shifter gives you the best of both worlds. You do have to be aware when you have it in manual mode. It will downshift by itself as you slow down but it won’t upshift until you initiate it.

    To clarify, the three gear change settings effect what gear it holds for a given speed in auto, kickdown and very slightly but not much on the shift up if at full throttle as that is always maximum acceleration in any auto settings. The same three settings also effect the quickness and therefore harshness of manual shifts when paddle shifting as it does to slightly improved the maximum acceleration in D2 and D3 automatic mode. Care need be taken to not accidentally engage manual from automatic with an unintended press of ether paddle when driving this DCT.

    As a life long manual driver this all seems very complicated and confusing. Once it's in manual mode will it sometimes take over and try to over ride you sometimes or second guess what you want to do? Also I would have thought pulling back should shift down and pushing forward should shift up - can you change it? Are autos much less annoying in traffic jams? What is the procedure for using one in traffic jams?

  • @visionist7

    @visionist7

    Жыл бұрын

    In full manual mode it will downshift to stop you stalling but it won't upshift if you redline it - you have full control there. Also, having the lever back for upshifts and forward for downshifts is the race car layout (Porsche do it too). It follows the natural rhythm of the car's motion; towards the motion of acceleration when upshifting (pushing you into your seat) and deceleration when downshifting. These are the things that set a proper sports car apart from comfort cars like Mercedes or Audi. In traffic jams you apply the brake pedal and the car will stop, and you shift to neutral in one quick & easy motion of the lever if you don't wanna stand on the brakes whilst waiting, and back again for auto or manual when setting off. A hair of throttle is necessary to get going again, DCTs don't automatically "creep" like a slushbox auto. One thing Mercedes gets right is the "hold" function on their conventional automatics, which lets you release the brake pedal but the brakes stay applied (brake lights dim to not blind cars behind) until you feather the throttle, whereupon the car will crawl forward as long as you lightly hold the throttle and automatically brake again when you come off the pedal. I got used to it in an hour or so coming from only manual cars my whole life.

  • @TheFilwud

    @TheFilwud

    Жыл бұрын

    @@visionist7 My 2016 530d also does that, with the 8 speed ZF transmission, it has auto-hold. if selected, when you brake to a halt it will automatically keep the brake applied until you touch the throttle to move again, works well with the starty stoppy engine thing if you so desire as well. Or you can turn auto-hold off and have the car creep whenever you release the brake as is normal for a torque converter box.

  • @markcastle919

  • @ECPP

    @ECPP

    5 жыл бұрын

    This is normal since the DCT is more like a manual and operates dufferentoy. You need to get some throttle input to move with these.

  • @Tangent360

    @Tangent360

    5 жыл бұрын

    To creep forward you just need to give the gas a very slight tap. There's no need to stay on the throttle, just give it that tap. It'll maintain a relatively slow creep forward (or backwards if you're in reverse of course) just like an automatic until you come to a full stop again or give it more gas to start moving faster. Be aware that on a cold start when the engine is revving higher that creep can be surprisingly fast if you're not ready for it.

  • @kenfldude

    @kenfldude

    4 жыл бұрын

    Excellent advice by tangent 360, you will need to be careful on inclines and declines as well. The dct will hold your position for 2 secs and then will roll. Unlike a torque converter transmission that holds you in place. There is a learning curve to the dct but well worth it in performance.

    when you're in Manual mode, does the brake act as the clutch in manual transmissions? so you need to ease into the gas while slowly removing your foot from the brake?

    The "complexity", if you will, is not so much due to the transmission design, but due to the fact the instructions in the owner's manual are poorly worded and laid out. At least for the manual for the M2.

    The reason why you could not lock the car at 2:53 is not because you didn't set it in the 'P' possition. It does that because the carkey is INSIDE the car. It never locks the car when the key is inside anywhere in the car even the trunk.
