The new BMW M2 (G87) may not be that pretty but does its performance match its price ? Based on underpinnings from the BMW M4, the M2 has a shorter and more agile chassis and runs a slightly de-tuned version of the same 3.0L twin turbo straight six. I recently went to Germany with Joe and Pat from the @drivetorquepodcast and got to spend pleny of time either following or driving the new M2. I took it to some cool roads and put it through its paces.

Nextbase never again, GW522 constantly shuts itself down for no reason and downloading footage is painstakingly slow if it doesn't fail while doing so. Nextbase dashcams 🐖 😠
Came from an M2 CS manual and just took delivery 2 months ago of a 23’ M2 manual. My dealer put me down for one like a year ago and I hesitated to even take it when it came in and initially I wasn’t blown away but this car has won me over and I’ll admit that I enjoy it even more than the CS. It’s super confident and stable in corners, feels more solid, engine sounds better inside the cabin, and best of all (and most surprising) the gearbox is far better than it was in the CS. Still don’t love the styling from some angles but far definitely has presence in person that pictures don’t convey. Considering it was damn near $30k less than the CS I think it’s a bargain and highly recommend to anyone on the fence about it

I am on the fence, but on the fence between a Supra and M2. This car is going to be my forever car, and I think that's what will ultimately push me towards the Supra. I don't see the M2 being good in the longterm

same. I went from a f80 CS to a g80 xdrive to a g87 6 speed. And gotta say I like the g87 the most for a weekender especially with all my mods. the g80 xdrive was a close second (better daily obviously) and the f80 cs a long way off from the 2. bmw really knocked it out of the park with its g platform... and I actually love the styling. the g80/g87 looks so mean and menacing in person.
The offset pedals in a £70k car is unforgivable!

It's a grown up M car in my opinion. We have one in grey and reckon it looks great. Avoided the expensive seats. They're probably great for the track but it's a road car really and the majority of owners won't track them. Only time will tell how it stacks up against previous models.
Excellent car. Loads of fun and definitely more power than the stated 460hp. Just bought one after driving 911s for 25 years.
To answer your question, it looks good and is ultra desirable. It is in a class of its own, so the price is hardly surprising. That six cylinder is a joy to drive I would imagine. Cheers, Tom

Not normally a BMW fan, but I like the looks of this one with the squared intakes. The mass of 1.7 tonnes is in the same ball-park as several EVs, such as the MG4 Trophy Extended Range, but I doubt the usual anti-EV brigade will be suggesting this car creates excess potholes or collapses car parks.
Another great review! One thing I use to do in my M135 F21 was lift the armrest to avoid it getting in the way of your elbow/arm, my no means a perfect solution but it gave you room when you needed it. One reason why I loved the M4 CS (F82) without the armrest, just a shame that wasn’t manual.

Styling: bloody awesome Pete ( simple as ) preferably in a dark metallic grey !! my personal preference. But overall a lovely car that has defo road presence 👌👌
Not being a BMW fan it is not for me but I do like the styling of it certainly at the back with that square shape and real quad exhausts. I would want the carbon seats but really £9k for that package seems a bit steep as I am sure most people would want to spec them.
Made in Mexico in a brand new facility with brand new staff. I'd wait for the 2024 or 2025 for BMW to sort out any bugs

A prize shall be awarded for the first video motoring journalist who runs a cleaning cloth over the dash, steering wheel, controls, and so on, before taking close up shots, which show all the dust and finger prints. Not a huge thing, but l reckon the manufacturers would appreciate it.

Having driven both variants Pete, my stand-out impression was how good the manual was compared to the rest of the BMW ranges manual boxes. It is miles ahead of the usual rubbery feeling shift. For a daily driver, I wouldn't spec the carbon buckets, they are too much (style wise & cost), I'd spend the money elsewhere. If you use it as a weekend & track car only then yes, they are great. Overall, looks aside my experience is positive..... but that 1M you & Joe have borrowed looks much nicer 😍

saw the first one in the flesh so to speak at my local dealer, light blue very nice.
The carbon roof and interior is standard despite the configurator giving the impression they're part of the track pack. BMW take the pi$$ with the carbon seats - over £9k for the seats, increased top speed and a driving experience event.
For this price point it should made in Germany with quality build right!

Great review as always.It's a bit too shouty looks wise for me I'm afraid.Power,yes,but in a more understated way would be better. The front and rear boxy squares remind me very much of last Civic type R.

Are all current M2's interior only available in dark colours, i love the fact that in the M3 and M4 you can get bucket seats in wonderful colour combo's

I owned an og m2 Great sound but just needed to be a tad faster. Think the last gen m2 comp was the perfect combo These latest cars are to expensive for me these days Thinks I might end up with an m240i in purple

I hate big wheels for this reason. Makes the car feel boaty/floaty. My E92 335i came with 19"s on the sport package, I stepped down to 18s **cough** and some super lightweight BC forged wheels **cough** and the car feels so much quicker, more nimble, better turn in. I would definitely run these cars on 19s or even 18s if the brake calipers allow it. You might sacrifice a little of the racerboy appearance, but you will get ride comfort among a whole host of other things(unsprung weight reduction, reduced wear and tear, etc)
I like the looks of new M2
I’m confused with the styling a bit my inner child loves it but my adult self can’t figure out if this is trying to look like a toy car or a bmw. Great review Sir Pete and I do like the color of the car
Looks wise reminds me of MK2 Escort RS2000 X pack. Especially being Red.

Well it’s BMW M2 and yes it’s square and slightly strange looking and little bit wider , the engine it’s great making solid sounds and actually really good you could have in manual then the price it’s little bit expensive and I have experience to meeting them on the track and they still struggle against our GP3 in time trails that give us really good satisfaction 😂🏁Personally I more like the previous generation. Because this second generation trying too hard to be track car but it’s actually a GT car and that’s the problem Really good video love it.
Hi Ped Lots if things to like about this car, but are they outweighed by the negatives? Seats look great but the seating position flawed and the price ridiculous, sorry the info screen may be a tec marvel, but I hate it. Sound is just right, performance spot on, looks well might just grow on me. Would I buy one, well it sits in a very competitive section of the market, so it could lead to interesting ba ck to back test drives.😉😉

It may have divisive looks but for me, Yep I love it and would have one in a heart beat. Styling 10/10. Everything else 11/10. Awesome car! What's not to like.

Felt like on the whole it was being given faint praise. Your comments struck me as honest and pointed out all the sort of things that I’d expect to notice when picking a car too. Think it shows evidence of the manual being an afterthought as the seat and the arm rest wouldn’t have shown up in an auto. I fear we passed peak Manual “M Car” in the Fxx generation cars. That’s no bad thing just a state of the world we live in now, and I still applaud BMW for trying to make a drivers choice

In a manual demo with standard seats I didn’t notice the pedal offset and found the driving position comfortable. A left hand drive car probably doesn't have the issue.

Biased cause I'm getting one to replace my M2 Comp (both manual). For me the extra convenience and cruising refinement compared to a Cayman or Emira outweigh the less engaging handling or engine sound. It is not expensive compared to a similarly equipped Cayman GTS 4.0 or Emira, and there are no other manual 6 cylinder sporting cars to compare with (sorry Z4 or 240). The carbon seat package is crazy, that money to make it less comfortable and less easy to get in and out. But I'm worrying about the looks.

Never been into BMW but sat in one a few days ago. I like the looks,not pretty but very muscular and wide,i like that. The carbon seats were awful in my opinion,rubbed my inner thigh,standard seats much better. The price will be about the same as the new Dark Horse mustang so will be looking at that too.Booked the M2 for a test drive with the manual and Auto so will shall see.
Now that is how to change gears in a manual M2 😜

So many straight lines on the car always makes me think the rear arches have melted. Boxed arches would of improved it no end
The looks will grow on people, I'm sure, but, as said, it'll never be thought of as pretty. In the scheme of things, I think it's decent enough value for money for the power and overall package. However, I think the best value performance car in BMW's current line-up is the M240i, which is significantly cheaper, has been tested to do 0-60 in 3.7 secs, and IMO looks far nicer. Of course, the M240i is a road car, not a track day car. That's fine by me, but if you do want to do regular track days then I think an M2 auto is a very good choice. Personally, I wouldn't choose a BMW manual, nor would I choose those bucket seats. Thankfully, you can get the excellent auto, and non-bucket seats. Peformance-wise, both the M2 and M240i are more 911 rivals than Cayman rivals. The M240i rivals a base Carrera for about half the money, and the M2 rivals a GTS for about half the money. And I don't think anyone makes an inline 6 better than BMW. The i4 2 Series coupes are the rivals of the flat-4 Caymans, and are again considerably cheaper. It's also worth noting that the tech in all the 2 Series coupes is bang up-to-date, whereas the tech in the Caymans dates back to 2012 with the introduction of the 981/991.1 models. I love Porsche and am more of a Porsche person and am certainly not a BMW fanboy, but facts are facts. Of course, no BMW handles like a Cayman. It's horses for courses. The Caymans and 2 Series coupes are very differeent cars with differing strengths and downsides, but would nonetheless be on the same shortlist for all who aren't brand loyalists. *Restricting the choice between the current 2 Series coupes and Caymans; personally I'd choose an M240i for daily use, and for weekend use I'd choose a Cayman GTS 4.0 manual over this M2.* However, if i were to buy a car with track days very much in mind, I'd probably choose a Cayman S PDK (2.5L flat-4 turbo with 350 PS).

In the manual setup, this is basically a modern E46 M3. Once this model goes it will be all electric, so if you don’t like that, then stop complaining 😝 All new car prices have gone up now - e.g. a Golf R with a couple of options is over £50k

Really a drivers car. Manual gear, lot of torque, ... a really fun machine. But ... the design is definitly not what i like. The new M3 Touring, thats more what i like. The small grill, the whellhouses... no, not my favorite. Instead of this car, i would prefer a more light ones... a Lotus Exige 360 or similar. But tastes ar different ... btw I really like your reviews!!

All those complaining about boring EV’s - this car is probably your last chance to buy a new performance car with no electric assistance and a manual gearbox. Fill your boots !

Very Marmite, Pete. If you squint and turn your back it looks okay. I'm not a fan, far too many boxy shapes on the body - a face perfect for Radio. Driving position looks a little compromised, which is surprising for a Beemer. I can see it being a hoot to drive as a manual, though. Far too rare now.
Peddle box alignment. Hmmmmm. Possible lower back issues.
Great review - great car. Two negatives, though. You’d have to pay me £9,000 for to have those seats in my car. What is it with the codpiece? Plus, I’m not crazy about the idea of driving a performance car with a big screen TV for a dash. I would much prefer the simplicity of, say, the Audi TT’s.

You’re a Porsche driver and I am pretty sure you’re not rushing to swap it for one of these ! I could easily drive past the BMW dealer and pick a Cayman over this. Which is a shame cos in many ways it’s a brilliant car !

I agree the porsche looks better but this thing outperforms the base cayman by a lot. The cayman has a relatively pedestrian 300 hp from its turbo 4. The M2 is dynoing at over 500hp from its turbo 6. The performance numbers really aren’t close. Dollar for dollar the M2 is a better sports car bargain, probably the best available, with the exception of a c8 vette.

@@bluegryp I would only recommend the GTS 4.0, in the Boxster/Cayman range. The growl of the flat six is addictive. I wouldn’t go anywhere near the Turbo models personally.
If I was driving it, I wouldn't care about the looks. But if I could only look at it, I wouldn't want it. The four corners look like they have malignant growths on them.
Sit a little higher (you look very low down) and buy the auto, then I don't think the pedal box will be an issue. IMO much better looking than an M4 and in case you haven't noticed, cars are getting very expensive, not just EVs
Surely BMW would of made the trip possible not next base?

Ive’d had carbon buckets in my M4 and would of loved then in my M2 order, but BMW ripping us off with the price considering there a £3.7k option in M3/4 shame on you BMW and lots more customers would of spec them at this price v’s £9k !!!! We don’t even get a 360’ camera that much cheaper cars in range get such as M240i

PS (PferdStarke) is metric horsepower and equivalent to 0.98 brake horsepower 👍
I think BMW have taken alot of styling points from ever angle, both front and rear from the New 2023 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak.🤔
I’m sure with the engine/torque power this car has, it’s a hoot to drive. However, at £70k+ I think you are entitled to be ‘picky’….. not lining up the seating position with the pedals is such a basic thing, along with the lack of room for your arm to comfortably change gear. Those are things that would then bug the hell out of me and spoil my enjoyment of the car 😔
Very heavy and very expensive. Options also. Our roads down under are poorly maintained. Pot holes everywhere. Not great.
I think this best looking car bmw have done since f83 and e60. It's stunning from every corner

Styling is awful, and the only reason I imagine that you would buy one is that you need the additional space. You can pick up a low mileage Cayman GTS 4.0 for similar money, which is a stunning looking car, drives superbly and which has one of the greatest engines ever made.
Hey Ped I'm afraid I think it's just ugly. Much prefer the last one. I think BMW generally styling wise have become brutish so I'll stick with more graceful older models 😢
