BMW LSD retrofit - Carrier preload, gear patch and backlash

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#LSDswap #BMWLSD #E36 #E30 #Backlash
This is a demonstration how to properly install LSD unit from E36 into open diff housing from E30. Focus is on how to adjust carrier preload, which is optimal thickness of adjustment shims and how to measure rotational resistance. We explain what to do if carrier unit is too tight and what if it to loose.

That was fast :D I didn't wanted to sound offensive or anything like that in the previous version, just wanted to make it clear. Really nice videos guys, with a lot of information which is almost impossible to be found anywhere else

Great video! I see that for the carrier preload you used two bolts two bolts for each carrier side. After you find the preload, will using all the required bolts for the carrier flange affect the carrier preload? Only because i would assume the initial two bolts are not exerting the same amount of force equally the roller bearing. Lastly, are the carrier flange bolts torqued or just installed to be snug? Im currently redoing my diff and this would be very helpful to know. Thank you!

Thank you for your feedback. Those 2 bolts are enough to keep cups pressed so you can adjust preload. After the procedure all bolts are mounted. Torque spec is 40Nm. Also use sealant compound on 2 bolts closest to the cover as their holes passes through so oil knows to leak there.

Great video guys! I plan to order schims and clutch pack from you guys soon. Is there a reason for you increasing 0.1 on one side and 0.2 on the other side?

You're welcome! Actually no. First you adjust preload, then go for position.

Hello and thank you for your videos. Ive just rebuilt a 188mm diff and i was told to set carrier preload to just over 1nm. After watching this video i need to ask. Is this too much and should i rectify this or have you set up diffs with this much carrier preload before. Is this much preload too much? Many thanks for your time.

  • @RacingDiffs

Actually, it is not too much so you should worry about it. Eventually it will break in to 0.7Nm, which is fine👍🏻

wesome, thank you so much I was a little worried about it. Also your shim pack was excellent Made it very easy to set up the diff correctly What would be your max torque setting for lsd for street and a little circuit racing My one has 230 nm with a 4 clutch internal Machined top plate to fit it all in Would this torque create wheel chatter while turning on the street? If this is too much what do you recommend Thank you so much for all your help I really appreciate your time, Your knowledge and your sharing of your knowledge. George k Syd Australia

You're welcome! I would say 230Nm is too much for the street and circuit. For drift, it would be okay. So grind the cap a bit more or use thinned preload shims. We have them available in 1.5mm thickness. I would aim for 120-150Nm.
