Everything is clear and the video is very helpful. The only question I have is when you welded the steel washer to the "metal stick", did you weld it in the way it would move or stood still?

It still needs to move. The washer holds the mirror together. We are just replacing the washer from where we did the drilling

good vid I have an E46 02 323i with this type of setup but I think the gears are different ..was thinking of repairing the mirror I have but the pivot sleeve I think I would try and replace it with something ..did you measure the pivot pin ...there would have to be something that would take the place of it...or if I have to use existing pivot I might try and solder instead of welding

Drilling an access hole and adding lube did not work for my passenger side mirror but this method shown did! An alternative to re-assembling by welding is to use a nut, bolt and combination of washers which can be slid off center to allow the wiring to pass through.

I did something very similar to this. Instead of welding I just took a 12mm alu tube, cut it to size, cut in 2 grooves and used seger rings to avoid having to weld anything. Mechanically everything went well but disaster struck, im not sure what went wrong, but now my entire window switch assembly is dead, cant open any windows or adjust mirrors. Any thoughts why? The only clear fuckup I can think of is forgetting to disconnect the battery before cutting the 3 pin mirror cable. Nothing noticable happened during the cut but I have no other explanation.

At 0:13 you can see that there is originally a flared flange swaged into the tube which he drills out to release it. Since material is removed he had to weld the washer to hold the tube in place. The welded washer replaces the original lip that was flared out on the tube that held it in when it was originally assembled. That tube that goes through the spring at 4:11 has a flange on both ends when the mirror is built, but in order to remove it he had to drill off the flange on one end.

JUST FIXED THIS DIFFERENT WAY!!!! JUST SPRAYED A LOT OF WD40 UNDER THE ROTATING PART OF THE MIRROR. Remove plastic cower, then just pull whole mirror up (or bend it to the side) so there's a thin space under the rotating mechanism between the mirror and car holder. (Buy small 100ml WD40 with thin pipe, so you can squeeze it deeper into that 1mm space what you will have when pulling mirror up or bending it to the side. Note! You can pull or bend it just slightly, just few millimeters). Spray WD40 into that space aiming to the area, where this stuck thing is located (that thing with spring, what this guy in video oiling in the end), keep removing excessive WD40 with paper towel. Rotate left right, shake a bit the whole mirror, not too much, don't damage anything, then repeat. After a while (in 5 minutes or may be 1 hour) oxidation on the lock will be gone, the mechanism will get unlocked and working again. No need to damage the mirror. Then just put plastic cower back.

For anyone down this rabbit hole on an F25 X3 (2011-2017), the axle on which the mirror pivots can be removed by pressing it down and rotating the part about 1/8th of a turn. if you drill a 5mm through the gaps in the spring, you can get a hex wrench in between there to assist with the rotation. Then you can reuse the part and avoid finding someone with a tig welder.
