BMW e60 Wiper Arm Linkage Replacement. No more knocking!
Hi everyone and welcome to another Bimmer Fixer video.
In this video I will show you how to replace the wiper linkage on your BMW e60. Over time the bearings in the linkage get worn out and start to disintegrate, if you don’t catch it in time, you could be left driving down the motorway in the rain and have the wipers completely fail. The good news is that you should get some sort of warning in the form of a lot of knocking noises from the wipers when they are in use before the linkage fails. It’s a straightforward job to do as I talk you through the process step by step.

    This actually happened to me on the M4 at 70mph in torrential rain. It was like something had flew into the windscreen. Not a pleasant experience, and was stranded with no wipers in storm (the rogue drivers side wiper knocked the passenger side wiper off on to the motorway - also caused damage to the bonnet paintwork. Poor design. Mine was knocking but had no idea that it would fail like it did and cause that much mayhem. Good video - if yours is knocking cant recommend strongly enough to fix it for about £20.

    4K miles done in the past 3 weeks (Europe road trip) and it failed me on the way back to England as I left Paris. The bearings snapped and it caused both arms to interfere with eachother to the point that none of them would move. Thank god there was a toll and I came to stop so in the end I had to remove the wiper and drive back to England with just the passenger side working 😂 my head was literally in the middle of the car trying to see as much as I could for the remaining 5 hours of that trip 😅

    hey. what do you recommend? getting this complete unit or get a replacement bearing kit to use on the original linkage?

  • @TheBimmerFixer

    @TheBimmerFixer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi powpow, I would say for the little extra cost i would change the whole unit. It doesn't have to be a unit from BMW or even OEM the units you can find online nowadays are very reasonable and good quality just double check the reviews from that supplier and you can't go wrong. This also saves having to remove the bearings which can be fiddly and take some time if you don't have the correct tools. Hope this helps powpow 👍

    What's NM value on the wiper arm mean ? Mines got 35NM stamped on passenger side left wiper arm.

  • @TheBimmerFixer

    @TheBimmerFixer

    @Jeepers Creepers Great question, It means Newton-meters so the Nut on the wiper arm should be torqued to 35 Newton-meters of torque when tightened

  • @jeeperscreepers786

    @jeeperscreepers786

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TheBimmerFixer brilliant, thanks. There is no NM value on the right side linkage, only on the passenger side arm, guess it applies to both wiper arm bolts. I replaced wiper arm linkage using your video 👍. All looks great but hand tightened it as I don't have a torque wrench 😔. Looks and feels pretty solid. Working fine and will check bolts again in a week as we are blessed with rain here in summer 😂

    Do you know how to adjust the left bolt on the arm with the flat edges? Mine looks like it too high.

  • @TheBimmerFixer

    @TheBimmerFixer

    Жыл бұрын

    @Jazzi So you can adjust it by slightly loosening the bolt on the arm and move the arm down slightly, try not to completely remove the boly just loosening it. This should do the trick and give you enough room to move the arm to the correct position. Hope this helps

    @Jazzi Ok the only thing left to do is to remove the arm altogether and reseat it. That will be the only way you can get it to sit correctly, I had to do this when I bought my e60 it bugged the hell out of me.

    @Alex Algar Hi Alex, you can give it a good soaking with penetrating fluid and leave for a few minutes then use something to carefully lift the arm off the spindle. You can give it some taps with a hammer to help release it too. Let me know how you get on 👍🏻
