Gotta love these old BMWs. The E39s have the same issue with the lower headlight bolts being inaccessible, which is why I prefer to take my skid plate off before removing them so the bolts that I will inevitably drop fall to the ground. I’ve tried magnetized screwdrivers, but they’re only strong enough to feign security before dropping the bolts through to the skid plate.

To add to why its such a pain to pull the assembly's out is because on the bottom towards the outside there is a plastic guide the headlight also uses for stability ( literally just did mine a few minutes ago ) you will want to make sure that goes back in its place. As for the bulb installation, look for the notch in the plastic ring just above the bulb so you can line up the square notch for removal and installation. To make things easier, I used extra long needle nose pliers because I have gigantic hands it was super easy to install!! Great video for all of us pre LCI cars!!

Thank you! And no, not yet anyways. What is the benefit of changing the eyebrows? I would try just calling the dealer about replacement parts. That is usually the easiest way to find those tricky specific parts.

Now that you've had these in for a while, can you tell if the lights run cooler (temp. wise) and perhaps (fingers crossed) the wiring insulation does not flake off due to the heat produced from the stock bulbs? Am considering putting in LEDs into mine hoping the conversion will significantly reduce temps within the headlight assembly.

I have not noticed this to be a factor, though they probably do run a few degrees cooler, but not enough to make any real difference. The xenon ballast/bulb and the heat from the engine is going to have this same effect on wiring.

I have a 2008 E60 M5 so it's a different light bulb like you mentioned, so which kind of bulb should I get? Thank you so much.

Spencer Liu it's not the same. You can get xenon or led bulbs that have a different style and shape and much more practical. I have a pair for sale if you still need but I doubt you'll see this

I don't remember the brand, and the link I saved no longer works. Follow the specs I listed (10w, 6,000k light temp) to find a comparable product for the E39/ pre-facelift E60.

I am not familiar with the newer model BMWs. There is probably a way to upgrade the angle eyes to either brighter ones or whiter ones. I would check online and see if there is a forum for your particular E65/F01 7 series.

Lets be brutally honest here...the original "halo's" on a pre LCI E60 M5 are well "piss poor" for want of a more descriptive word. I tried LED upgrades galore but they were still pathetic. In the end i opted to go with LED rings instead of the factory plastic optical ring. 2 new lenses, 4 new LED rings and 3 days worth of work later... Well impressed with the end result.. far better than the originals could ever be..

God damn are those hard to get out. I recently purchased led bulbs but they only fit the LCI model xenon headlights, yet I have an 07 pre LCI. I'm wondering if there is a way to mod the housing to retrofit a LCI led bulbs. Let me know if this is not possible before I waste a bunch of time. Great vid thanks

Anything is possible, but that sounds like a real headache. I would retrofit LCI lights before attempting to build a custom hybrid setup.

How visible are these in broad daylight? My stock bulbs are pretty hard to see in direct sunlight (unlike newer models where they are visible at all times) and I'd primarily be looking for an upgrade in that regard

They are not very much more visible in broad daylight than the stock bulbs. New BMWs use a very different technology in the halos, that allows them to be so bright. These older headlights are more a glow idea than anything else.

The LCI (2008+) E60s use H8 style halo bulbs. I recommend the 120W, 6,000k LED H8s on Ebay.

I would love to know how many f-bombs were dropped during the actual installation of the halo bulb and subsequent connection of it, during the time that the camera was not rolling. I replaced the first one and it was almost impossible to get it in and connected. I have still not been able to get the second one in yet. Whoever came up with the tight location of these lights has hopefully already been fired from BMW. Also, as my car is a 2004 and it is now 2017, all of the small wires inside the housing are brittle (probably from high heat) and exposed in many places, requiring a very tedious job of electrical taping to keep them from shorting out against each other. I imagine that is the reason that both of my Halo bulbs have failed, from all of the bare wires inside the housing. Oh well. Hope you're listening BMW.

My car had the same problem, got a set of used LCI lights. The guy who designed those headlights wasn't thinking of long term usage 🤦‍♂️

I have a e60 530 xi and I can tell you that's the cheapest mod you'll do on that m5 😂🇩🇪

If I have the xenon lights can I just plug in the regular halogen head lights insted of buying another xenon light

You could in theory remove the ballasts and run halogens, but every time you start the car you'll get warning lights for bulbs being out, since your car is equipped and program with xenon headlights. Replace your bulb for $60 and get another 10 years of light.

Both headlight halos are out? Have you tried fresh bulbs? Each headlight only uses one bulb to illuminate both halo rings, just so you know.

@@E39Source not the halos, but that LED with 4 dots on the most top aft corners in the headlight assembly. Won't lie, I do have to put a volt meter and see if the connector has voltage, I just can see them dying together. When I turn my parking lights, only the halos come on.

Lasted as long as we kept the pre-facelift headlights on the car, until 2018 or so. They should last 10+ years.

Justin Wells I don’t recall these being loose. They snap in tight enough, though there may be a hair of play. Not enough to make any difference in light output or water intrusion.

You just want to find 10w E60-compatible LED halos. Any that are 10w or more will work!
