BMW E39 525D Webasto Thermo Top Z/C-D Running

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Diesel powered Thermo Top Z/C-D heater by Webasto.
It is a test run after disassembling it and cleaning. Also replaced faulty auxiliary water pump and fixed faulty control unit. I have cleaned the whole inside of it with a solvent, so when it starts to heat up, after a minute of running, you can see some white smoke coming out (usually no smoke is coming out). It took 2 full cycles for the smoke to disappear completely.

Even a brand new one smokes in my E70. The dealer replaced it under Kulanz warranty, saved me 1400 Euros. I think the white smoke is just a function of it being fired by diesel. I just bought an E39 petrol 530i with a Webasto and it makes no smoke at all.

I don't think that it is related to fuel type. I guess new one (or the one which was not running for few years) could make some smoke during first few runs (3 cycles maybe), but later it should make no smoke. When I bought this E39, webasto heater was not working (had some electrical problem) and hod not been running for several years, after fixing this problem I have also cleaned all internal pars, so firs few runs were a bit smoky, but after that I have not seen any smoke for few years.

Congratulations on the good work. My E70 came with a Webasto that smoked so much that somebody once called the fire department in France! Then it started to drip diesel. The car was only 3 years old! It was leaking from everywhere. The BMW dealer in Deutschland replaced it under Kulanz. The new Webasto smokes much less. But I can still see white smoke in the first minute or so after it fires up from very cold. I think cold diesel always smokes at first. Our E53 smokes white when it's cold, for a minute. Our tractor does too. I had a big truck and it smoked a lot when cold. I think it's just cold diesel that smokes. I will reply here to let you know if the petrol Webasto in our E39 smokes. I think it works already in automatic mode (under 7° cold start) and I saw no smoke. Where do you live?

I live in Lithuania. I always use timers to start heating in the morning before I come to the car, so I can't really see if there are some smoke at the beginning. But I think you might be right, it is possible to see a little smoke on the moment it starts. But that is nothing compared to first few runs after cleaning Webasto - I had lots of smokes and it smoked during all burning cycle (30 minutes), after running few more cycles all smokes were gone. I was lucky that no one called the fire department like in your case, because it literally looked like the car was on fire :D

I replaced batteries in the remote and a blown fuse in the trunk, but the webasto won't start. I need to check more. The glovebox fuse is OK.

renohuskerdu Check errors in Webasto module using Inpa to be sure whats wrong. If it does not start after changing fuses, so there might be problem with circulation pump or K-bus breakdown error - problem with electrical part on top of Webasto heater.

Hello. What kind of problem does your webasto had? I've got two e39 and on both the heater isn't working anymore. On one has stop working about 3 years ago and the other one I don't know for how many years. My INPA do not want to connect with the heater module, probably isn't compatible. Any hints for common faults? Thank you in advance

Hello, the were two issues with mine: 1 coolant pump was dead (mounted on webasto), had to replace. 2. Control PCB inside webasto was faulty. It is hard to remember now, but I was able to fix PCB, I googled alot and found some information about faulty resistors inside the PCB. There are few white glue areas on PCB, under these glue areas, resistors are tend to burn out. Just resoldered new resistors and I got it working. It is something similar to this post: the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/archive/index.php/t-53896.html
