    FWIW I have the same R90X kit on my R75/6 with the stock under tank MC and it works fantastic. I've collected the bits needed for a handlebar MC swap and will do so either the next time the stock MC leaks and needs to be rebuilt (again) or when I have some spare time. Can't agree more with the closing sentiments of this video - among the best upgrades to my R75.

    It's a lovely conversion, my first RS had those awful eccentric pivot ATE calipers. Surprised you didn't go for a handlebar master cylinder and full braided at the same time (it never ends 😁)

    Hi Stewie, thanks for watching. I decided to start with just conversion and then go from there and now I can say stock under tank master cylinder works well and there is no need to replace it with handlebar mounted one. Main brake line is stock (rubber) but recently replaced.

    @@airheadbarn a nice radial brake master cylinder at the appropriate ratio is the next step up in feel and performance. So, I have a nice set of Brembo Goldline 4 pots to fit to my R100RS Mono. Not radial calipers but 1 step at a time 😁

    many thanks for your very informative video. Absolutely helpful and priceless. I am going ahead and will order from Matt(R90x designs) the parts I need to convert my brakes (BMW R90/6 early 1974)to exactly what you just showed us. My concern and question would be, to operate a brake lever with integrated master cylinder, how would I be able to get away with the setup I am having now which is an integrated brake lever and throttle twist grip? Any advise would be highly appreciated. Many thanks Felix

    If I understand correctly, you are saying you updated master brake cylinder to handlebar style, right? If so, please check the video where I did the same conversion on my R80ST. That should help you. Matt is also very helpful and can guide you through the installation. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    I’ve followed you from the start, setting up your workshop. I’ve enjoyed every video and learned so much. Got to ask why in the first minute of this one you had a bit of a downer on airhead cafe racers ? We’re all just airhead enthusiasts right ? 😉 I have a 75/5 but with a /7 ate brake set up. I love it. It’s pretty stock otherwise but I also love what other people have done with their bikes and I just can’t walk past one without stopping to look or chat with the owner

    Hi Peter, thanks a lot for watching our channel. It is really matter of personal preference what is more appealing to each one of us. With that said, I’m more on a purist side or purist with minimal interventions, like brakes mod but I do find few cafe racers to look amazing. Unfortunately, most of others are just attempts which result in ruined otherwise perfectly fine bike. That is my personal opinion. I’m glad you are satisfied with your oem ate brakes on /5-7. I tried to get to used to them but because of safety reasons, I gave up. Too much planing in advance was necessary resulting in less enjoyable ride. And at the end, there will always be bad circumstances in traffic that we just cannot plan and for that reason, I wanted something more robust. Now after some miles, I can confirm, this conversion is the best upgrade I’ve done to my airheads. Thanks again for your perspective and keep the heads up!

    I just purchased an R80/7 that’s been bored out to 1000cc, and and plan to attach my Sputnik 3 sidecar to it. I’ve been told the ATE front brake might not do well with the extra torque and sidecar load, plus, I imagine those ATE brake discs are probably a little more $$ than more modern discs, so I may look into a Brembo conversion. Would I need to switch out the master cylinder?

  • @airheadbarn

    @airheadbarn

    You can start with stock master cylinder and see how it will do. It works for me but it might be a bit underpowered for sidecar so you will need to experiment a bit. Thanks for watching!

    I’m considering doing this upgrade in addition to having a brass sleeve installed in the master cylinder. Do you think the shrinking the master cylinder diameter from 14mm to 12.7mm will negatively effect performance when used with a brembo caliper?

  • @airheadbarn

    @airheadbarn

    8 ай бұрын

    Hi David, I installed same setup on 2 different bikes: r75/7 with 14mm master cylinder and r80st with 12mm master cylinder. The one with 14mm cylinder performs way better. All brake components of both setups are updated for the best performance but simply 14mm works much better. You will probably have improvement compared to stock Ate system but if your stock is 2-pot brembo like I have in my r80st, there is no significant improvement. Actually, I can now say that I liked stock 2-pot brembo better. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

    @@airheadbarn thank you for your reply! It’s very helpful. I purchased a brembo caliper like the one you have. My concern is that my current master cylinder could have pitting on the inside surface. If 14mm offers better performance I wonder if the master cylinder could be bored out and sleeved to the same 14mm diameter. I’ll reach out to Apple hydraulics and see what they say.

    the conversion looks nice but it requires quite a lot of work. Although Gold BREMBOs are way better than ATE calipers, I guess that a pretty similar result can be achieved by getting rid of the crappy under-tank MC in favour of a radial piston lever on the handlebar while retaining ATE's. Not to mention that too much braking power on one rotor only tends to warp those slim downtubes.

  • @airheadbarn

    @airheadbarn

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Enrico, I considered that as less involving mod but I doubt master cylinder swap would have equal result as big rotor and 4 pot modern calipers but don't have data to confirm. I heard many people mention tubes warping if brakes were too strong. I would still like to see the real example. Lets see if there is someone who experienced this. Thanks for watching

    Do you think the end result is great? Do the breaks feel pretty natural and not too full on? I recently purchased a 77 R100/7. I bought it knowing front brakes don’t work. I reconditioned everything to perfect. The brakes were terrible compared to my 91 Airhead. I felt like selling the bike but this video gives me hope. As long as brakes not too savage after this conversion like someone else in comments mentioned. What do you think? Maybe another video with final conclusions after some extended use. Thanks again. Good content.

    Thanks for watching. I can definitely post some more comments after more riding but these first couple of hundred miles I did with this new brakes setup, makes this the best upgrade I did. Feel for these brakes is so natural. They are truly modern brakes. I had f800gt, and not taking untilocking functionality into account, these brakes come very close. I finally have full control over the bike with only 2 fingers and I can dose it however I like. This is my experience but ymwv. Good luck!!!

    Can this conversion be completed on a 1994 R80RT?

  • @airheadbarn

    @airheadbarn

    Жыл бұрын

    This one definitely not since it is a conversion for ATE brakes and your bike has Brembo. If the adapters exist, it would be similar to my R80ST conversion that you can watch here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZtps7eheKrJcrw.html Your bike most likely has dual brakes so you would need to source the parts for that particular setup compared to ST in video that is single disc. Give Matt from r90xdesigns a call and check if he has the adapters for your bike. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    @@airheadbarn I have a 78 R100RS Motorsport edition and since it's a fairly rarer version I didn't want to change the stock ATE caliper forks for the Brembo ones (I've had a great deal on some with calipers included and new brake pads) so instead I bought a new 14mm bmc and I have to say it works very well. The wooden feel has gone and now it's almost like my K1100RS.
