The BMW 6 Series is big, luxurious and well-rounded enough to take on competition from the Audi A5, the Jaguar XK and the Porsche 911. It's a capable GT car designed to cross continents in record time, with enough room for four people and all their luggage. In diesel trim, it's incredibly economical, too.
Mat: Got a continent to cross and want to do it in style, comfort and very very quickly -- well there's not many cars better for that task than the BMW 6 Series.
It's a striking looking machine thanks to its low slung body and sloping roof line while the aggressive face will help bully other drivers out of the way. Still at least they will be able to admire it's pert rear end although, obviously not for very long.
Speaking of the back end, it may look short but there's actually plenty of room in the boot. There's also a ski hatch, which is handy for those who plan a trip to the Alps -- well so long as you don't snowboard as that won't fit. But then this is more of a car for skiers than boarders.
Inside the 6 Series is a beautiful place to sit. The interior design is very modern, the build quality is solid and the car oozes luxury from every single pore.
There's leather absolutely everywhere, here on the dash, here on the door trims, here on the arm rest. That just adds to the premium feel. So does the super comfy seats which are heated and electrically adjustable as is the steering column. All cars also get stuff like parking sensors, which you will need due to the sheer size of the thing, dual zone climate so you don't argue with your passenger over what temperature is best and sat-nav with traffic updates to stop you arguing about which is the best route to take. And considering this is a coupe, storage is pretty good too.
As you'd imagine the BMW 6 Series is a very quick car -- especially if you go for the twin-turbo V8 petrol. But if you are crossing continents you'll be slowed down with numerous fuel stops. The smart person's choice is the 3.0-litre straight six twin turbo diesel and here's why -- it does 0-62mph in just over 5 seconds, it has amazing low down shove, it sounds good yet, and best of all, it can return around 50 miles per gallon which is about the same economy as a 1.6-litre Vauxhall Astra.
The 6 Series is a very relaxing car to travel in because it is quiet, the eight-speed auto gearbox is smooth and it's very comfy. It's even better if you get a car with the adaptable drive package as that has a comfort mode, which slackens off the suspension. Thing is though that system costs over three grand and you are going to need that if you want the 6 Series to drive as well as it can because it also includes a sport mode which not only stiffens up the suspension but uses active anti roll bars to keep the car completely flat through corners.
However, despite the fact the 6 series has good body control, plenty of grip and sharp steering it's still not as fun to drive as a Porsche 911.
And despite being a whole heap bigger and heavier, it's barely much better for carrying people in the back. Still if that's what you want to do there's always the 6 Series Gran Coupe which is longer and has rear doors, though that's still not as Spacious as a Porsche Panamera.
To many people this BMW will be a more attractive option not only because it looks sweeter but it's less costly too -- especially in the case of this super efficient yet super fast 640d diesel model.

best looking bmw ever. it will be a timeless classic.
“No ones phone is that big anymore unless you have a Samsung” says the flexing man now with the large foldable Samsung ...
BMW obviously predicted the arrival of the iPhone 6pplus!
Whether that noise is synthesised or not, I am very impressed with how good BMW diesels are nowadays. I would have the 640d in a heartbeat.

First time seeing this channel in 2021. Did not expect Mat Watson to be here!!
aweosme video CarBuyer.. n really liked the looks n sound it makes !!
Okay, so let me clear that up for you. If you watch most of Mat's reviews nearly all of the cars have insanely high mpg's than the US equivalent. The reason is not that Europeans are somehow getting more efficient cars but because of two factors 1) The gallon used in the UK (Imperial Gallon) is 20% larger than ours (primary reason) 2) US mileage estimates (EPA's ratings) are much more stringent reflecting higher standards and real world driving as opposed to the European estimates.
This guy is the best car reviewer
Awesome video! Glad you reviewed a BMW again.
i like how he gives a good consideration to suspension.. many cars i've owned are horribly uncomfortable because of their stiff suspension
Best car review channel!
I like that in 3:30 these a link in the top right corner or the Vhoxel ASTRA, as if some one who's looking to buy a 6-series is also comparing it to a freaking ASTRA!!
wow wow wow BMW never ceases to amaze!
classic mat Watson
Awesome work bro...probably the best car reviewer on youtube :)
...said the merc fan as he sat in his diesel golf ;)
Anyone 2021 with mat from carwow
This is one of my of my favourite cars of all time..
I was in one of these yesterday was well impressed with the power. I’ve been in much more powerful cars but this is plenty of power for the road
I feel like the 911 comparison is probably matt's daftest comment in any vid I've ever seen him in.
Still looks good 10 years later
Is he the same guy with the carwow channel?

Mat... do you still have snow there in the UK?? It's almost summer here now! :)
Does anyone know if the back windows go down so you have have one big open window?
“No ones phone is that big anymore” Me casually sitting in 2021 watching phone ads the size of a wide screen tv from 2008 :o
Why haven't you reviewed a cabrio version? :(
Yes that is the real noise the car makes, its not fake they pipe the engine noise through the car speakers

@@immigrant3221 well I change all the fluids, filters and flushed the transmission myself once a year and I changed timing chain after around 100000km because i was taking out the engine anyway. A bit overkill but I'm planning to keep this car for many years.

its coupe how u want it larg in back set
This car is so beautiful!!! Oh my god!!! So much better than the last version!
I do appreciate and thank you for shedding some light about that. But those two factors alone couldn't be enough to explain why a car like the BMW 6 Series diesel could get 50 MPG. Or would they? That's at least 3 times more than anything here in the states. And do they even import BMW diesels to the U.S.?
never heard a diesel sound like this on about 3:18? and the audi A5 3.0 TDI 240hp?lovely sound
Guys should i buy coupe or grancoupe 640d i cannot decideeeee
can u review a bmw 7 series plz?
Still a beautiful car

Good presenter... Great car
Awesome as always !! :) CAN you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE review the Volvo S60 Polestar ?? :D it's faster then that BMW :P
Yes!!!
Need this car so bad!!!
it is a very good car
Phone tray is that size because regardless of which phone you have, you need to buy a BMW adapter for it that you put into the tray...
Great exhaust engineers! But, considering its rear seat room, I'd go with a 911 myself.
The sound is virtual? Like 1M?
what a machine...
Yay for us go
beautiful car.... 'nuff said.
The American gallon is less than the imperial gallon. 50 mpg in the UK is about 41 mpg in the US.
Hey Mat, the phone holder is not too big! It requires a BMW Accessory iPhone cradle which is an exact fit, The cradle will charge the phone and connect the phone to the the vehicle's hands-free system.
I agree.
My real whole dream car, £35,000 these cost the grand coupe version start at about £45,000, so I'll have the normal coupe because its cheaper
nice
YESSSSS !! Finally.
The samsung-part was easily the best...
Has anyone else noticed, Matt says buy the 3 litre diesel, when he is actually driving the 4 litre diesel!
What's wrong with you guys? Not a bad looking car? BMW series 6? It's fantastic!!!!! Thanks for reviewing
For thrills, personal prefference and experience, I'd never take a diesel engine, even the best over a petrol one, especially BMW's. But this isn't the 90's anymore. HOWEVER. In this price range? I wouldn't care less about the 3500 of the extra suspension or the consumption (which isn't terrible on the petrol and no way you get astra levels mpg from this car with the diezel). Simply enough money aren't usually the object for a 6 series potential buyer.
They finally fixed the back. Praise the BMW!
2021?
You say that but you have to have a balance somewhere, a grand tour isn't much of a grand tour if you spend more time at the gas station then you spend doing any touring. Even in motor sport where going fast is everything fuel consumption is important because the less time you spend filling up the more time you spend on the track which is probably why Audi has such an impressive record at LeMans.
huge panel gap between headlights and hood at 0.25
Matt my friend, is 2013 that far? Looking at the way you dressed up back then and your hairstyle, if it wasn't for the BMW, I'd think the video was shot in 1995...
Yes, you are right on this one. The 911 has always been a "do it all" kind of car. Also, about the 911's door panels: I find them to be very little padded (not that I care). Is that why YOU don't like the panels?
Diesel are generally more expensive though. Not sure if the premium price tag will out weight the less fuel consumption...
Beautiful car but did you really compare it to a 911 for driving experience ?? Comparing apples to orange!
This car is practically perfect
please add 640d in title
Do you like this design over the before ? Thanks !

How can one buy such a car in diesel.
I love CarBuyer, but they are obsessed with diesels. Not every car can be a diesel. In Ireland, all of my cousins have diesels except for one. That one owns a Bentley Conti GT Speed. Proper W12 engine. Same thing with cars like this and the E-Coupe/Cabriolet and the S class. A diesel takes away from the smooth ride intended for these cars and their buyers. For some cars, yes a diesel makes sense, but not for Grand Tourers.
The Diesel quality in the US is currently not good enough for most euro diesels. From what I've heard they're not far off these days.
He said: "the smart persons money". But I agree with you.
In New Zealand Diesel is as much as 60 - 70 cents per litre cheaper then petrol and it's easier for the environmentally aware individual to make their own biofuel then a petrol car not to mention the efficiency and higher torque means better pulling power if you have a trailer, diesel is not pointless at all.
