BMW 2 series f45 F46 '' secure vehicle with parking brake '' Problem FIX

In this episode you can see how I fix in the gear selector on a BMW 2 series f45 f46 a fairly common problem with the message "Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary" if you already knew how to fix congratulations to you and if you didn't know again bravo now you've learned how to fix it.
if you have done the same thing and still have the error it's possible ( 99%) that you didn't mount correctly back the spring , still if you are sure that you mounted it correctly next step is to do a diagnose (that normally needed to be done by the beginning)
The white ''Stuff'' that I'm using is Grease "Molykote EM-60L"

Domnule Ovidiu. Iti multumesc mult

Great video and very well explained fix of this annoying problem in our F46 220d grand tourer (7.5 yrs / 174.000km). We have the plug-in connecter for mobile phones in the arm rest, which comes with three more connectors to be carefully removed. The repair took me about three hours, with a couple of interruptions to study the respective sequences of the video. It‘s fun 😅

First of all, I have searched ages for someone showing me how to remove the arm rest. You really should add the bmw F45 in your title, because it’s the same car. Also you can make three other videos of this video, because you’re the only one showing how to remove the console and armrest out of this car.

This video is excellent! Thank you for creating and sharing. I was quoted £1000 by BMW (with 'discounted labour rates') to fix the issue, and after watching this I spent about 3-4 hours very gently walking through it, and my car is now fixed (and cleaner since I spent some of that time hoovering it out in the process). The spring cost about 50p. The only difficulty I had was making sure the electrical plugs (particularly the one that clips back to the top of the gearstick unit for the gearstick lights) were accessible to put back - that gearstick light plug had ended up hidden so had to back-step a little to untrap it and route it back up to the correct position.

Great video, very detailed, much appreciated, Got quoted $A2,700 by BMW in Victoria Australia and thought I would do it myself. Took around 6 hours as I wanted to go very slowly and its quite easy to break some the plastic tabs etc. Also wanted to document the wires and where they went so it would all work properly when done. All sorted, thanks again. You're a legend.

Thanks a lot for this! Mine broke around 140k kms. It took me net around 6 hours, doing everything slowly. Hardest part was getting the plastic pin out from gear selector. I must say it looks like a design failure. The spring wire under normal use is practically pushed against a plastic wedge, no wonder it breaks after a while. The spring broke exactly at the touch point where the edge is. In any case, great tutorial!

My wife’s 2016 Mini Cooper clubman s had the same message. Dug in and removed shifter and had the same problem. Shifter was exactly the same. Not able to use same spring so need to order a new one or try and find one. Ordered on eBay but first one was too small….need to find a larger diameter hole…..hope I can put it all back together. Gavin Blaesner has a KZread channel where he shows how to replace the shifter…..does not show what you have with fixing the spring….the two vids together tells what you need to know for 2014-2019 Mini Cooper.

Amazing video. Just followed this video to fix my 2016 220d Gran Tourer. Had the same fault message on dash and got the spring from Alibaba or Wish (can't remember which) for £3.50ish. They actually sent two for the price. Took me about 2.5 hours all in as wanted to be gentle and not break anything. Only issues I had was gear knob wouldn't pull off so left it on and carried on and I couldn't find the pin needed to push out to disconnect the gear cable at first- if this happens to you change the position of the gear selector until it lines up with the hole.

To remove cover of the gear selector you need to push in some specific place or it just should go up?

  • @thierryl.8469

Very helpful, my issue with the gear selector was exactly like you describe, what I don't understand is that BMW ask hundreds € to change the complete system just for a broken little spring ... Many thanks from France!

Hello ! you are right , it is a small spring ...but that part coms as a single component and that's why is so expensive .
