What are your thoughts on the BMPCC especially in 2021 with the amount of amazing cameras out there. I think this camera is still the heavyweight champion of Image Quality for the cost. Boshh 😎

I actually sold my Pocket 6K for an URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G1. The Pocket 6K has an awesome image, but the UMP (even G1) just has something more organic about it. I also recommend adding a RAWLITE OLPF to either!

Would love to be able to have a work flow that works in FCPX. Besides that, coming from a DSLR to a BMPCC6K, the ecosystems are totally different and you have to get used to manually white balancing, manual focus, but after doing those things, you become better. So it all depends on how you look at things

Yeah, I love this camera. It creates a beautiful image, great interface, Braw is just amazing, and it edits soooo well.

I think that BM RAW is such a massive plus and now that they make their own sensors, BM can now offer an end-to-end platform. Thats massive!!! I suspect that when they release their next 'pocket camera' (an updated 6K or otherwise) that it'll really be an amazing thing. However just like Panasonic, if they can give a 100% A.F then it'll be a massive step forward. I love my A7Siii...........wow what a camera.........and combined with the Sirui lenses (24mm on its way), its a killer combo.

Great review, I agree with you on most things. I guess things always get sacrificed for great image quality. We put up with the cons because the image quality doesn’t lie. I admit, it’s taking me a little bit to get use to the day to day shooting with this camera but, when you get that raw back in your editor you always have a great excitement due to how nice the image really is in this camera

I just bought the bmdpcc 4k and absolutely love it. The dynamic range is plenty for me, love the flexibility in the Raw codec, and image quality even in low light situations is fantastic. It's a great value for the money.

I hit the subscribe button on two sole reasons when you said weapon! Followed by that insane intro with that sound, Hells yes. Cannot wait to get my 6k pro

Everything you said is true - and all the cons can be augmented with some extras. While some cameras have it all built-in, true, the image quality trumps all those issues.

NEED to get hold of a BMPCC this year, the look is unreal!

Dope ass camera. My favorite thing is how many looks you can get from this camera. Like, RED looks like RED. It has that look. But BM seems to cross so many thresholds in terms of look depending on whose hands you put the camera into. BM really hit it out the park with their Pocket cams. Thanks for the upload and sharing your thoughts.

I love it and I don't even have one. It's the image quality for me. I love how BM made a camera that fits canon lenses natively.

Thank you for that 🙏🏼 Also I think this is a very fair review, most people that make reviews only offer their initial impressions so of course they are excited about what they are reviewing but once the honeymoon is over... does it still live up to expectations? I think your review one year on is very fair and honest with the pros and cons and if you've given me additional things to consider (e.g. battery dying and not recording last clip 😬).

Love it...we have two and about to get a third.... BTW, we solved the battery issue by getting the battery grip for it...it fits two npf batteries nd makes handholding the camera way easier...

I love my BMPCC6K, I don't particularly mind not having auto focus as I usually work with AC'S but I do wish it had some form of build in ND Filters. Even if it was just one 0.6 just to give 2 stops of light reduction.

Great review James. I know exactly what you mean about the depth of the colours vs other cameras being thin. I got an Ursa Mini Pro a year ago and think exactly the same when I compare it to Sonys

James, huge fan of yours! Please do a tutorial of how you color grade the BMPCC 6K footage, Boshhh!

Tilta make a simple screen modification kit mate, it lets you tilt and flip it! Tilta (and smallrig etc) also makes clamps for all the ports too

2 of your issues have been addressed and the others have workarounds. For the screen to tilt, Tilta offers a mod where if you send them your camera they will install a tilting mechanism for it and an extra ssd port where you can hide another ssd behind the screen. As for the battery life, Blackmagic has designed a battery grip similar to dslr battery grips which take 2 sony np-f 550 batteries that extend the life considerably. I would also highly recommend using a cage and cable port locks. Anyways, all in all is a good video, I'm very happy with my bmpcc4k and og bmpcc, amazing cameras.

I think he's approaching it from an "as-is" perspective. Because that Tilta mod cost like $550. As for the battery grip, I think a lot of people just honestly don't know it exists :) A year ago he made a video about his rig for this camera and explained why he went with a minimalist approach. So while a cage does offer some advantages, he did explain why he doesn't use one.

Battery life was my biggest concern before I bought this. I ended up picking up the battery grip for it. Takes 2 NPF batteries. I get about 2 hours of life from that, and it let's me go handheld a lot easier.

I'm glad I got mine. Meanwhile I've noticed so many people at the end of 2020 and begining of 2021 talk about hot a year+ cam is still the best for it's money, no matter how good are new cameras released after it to this moment.

You can modify the screen with the tilta modification, I'm not sure how to install it, but give it a look! Love your videos!!

I was also blown away by grading of BRAW and the relatively small file sizes compared to other RAW format, but I chose to go with Sony A7 SIII anyway, because of all the benefits it gives, including 120 FPS up to 4K and low light capabilities. Excited to see what Black Magic will give in the next model!

Yeah, thats the camera world. Theyre just tools at the end of the day some do some things better than others. Sounds like you've got a good set up!

James....I'm all about the 'image quality'...but like you said. There are so many little things that would make me nutz using it. If they fix a few of those items on you DON'T LIKE list...I'm right there with ya and this will be on my purchase list...until then. I'll keep enjoying what your able to capture with it.

I have a fully rigged 6K and an A7. The thing that shocked me was how good the A7Riii (not even an A7Siii) still looks, while not breaking my back, having IBIS and AF, and being able to take proper photos. The 6K was my first love, but day to day, anything below a full scale shoot, I find myself grabbing the A7 a *lot* more. Edit: That said, I used to feel the same when I only had the 6K and my ancient DSLR. Then I got a modern hybrid mirrorless and yeah, now I see why they're so much more popular.

Because while the BMPCC 6k/4k are excellent cameras they're not as versatile as something like an R6 or A7sIII. And that's not a knock on the BMPCC cameras. They're not designed that way. They're specialized cameras. I wouldn't even compare them to a mirrorless/DSLR. The BMPCC cameras should be compared more to something like Canon's cinema cameras or other dedicated cinema cameras. Like Leo commented, while I love my BMPCC, I find myself using an R6 more often for general use.

Super helpful as I'm about to pull the trigger on buying this! Crazy insane footage and can't wait to dive into it! Thank you for giving me the assurance and information needed before I do it!

I've bought BMPCC6k instead of Sony A7S3 or Canon R5 in 2020. I'm bloody happy about that decision. The image coming out of this camera is stunning and braw is so flexible you can save almost every shot if it is not exposed correctly. Of course you need to rig this camera so this $2000 is just starting price, but depending of your needs the rig can be just 100$ (+few canon LP batteries). But I'd say cage (or half cage), cable clamp, sdd holder, top handle, follow focus and external monitor on swiveling mount are essential for having BMPCC rigged. But all this can be done under 500$ on a budged and you get modular camera you can strip to bare bones or have professional rig for shooting in any situation. Big plus is that you got infinite lens options. You got every lens you can imagine on EF mount and you can choose between budget options (starting below $100) to professional cinema glass. I especially love Canon 35mm IS F/2 (~400$) on this camera, but you can have Sigma 18-35 F1.8 as only one lens (or even cheaper canon 17-55 F2.8) - endless options. Best camera to buy in 2021 ;).
