    Nice video anyway. I'm thinking about to get the bmpcc 4k. Another thing that surpriced me at first was that the Sony A7iii claimed to have 14-15 stops of dynamic range, because I know that the dynamic range is one of the best things with bmpcc and have only seen some cameras in the like $7000+ range that have like 14 or 15 (among those, some of the Black Magic designs most expensive models). I have had the old original bmpcc before - which could only shoot 1080p at 30 fps. Even that one hade very good dynamic range when filming in in daylight or well lit areas. But it was rather poor in low light (ISO1600 was it's highest setting and even that was so grainy, it was barely usable) - which they seem to have improved a lot on this one. Then when you said the bmpcc does have better dynamic range, I taught "ohh, Sony is cheating the specs - that's bad, because they otherwise make great cameras". Then it got me - the A7iii isn't mainly for video, but still images - the video function is more of an extra feature (even if it's still very good). Like most cameras in this class, it can probably shoot still images in raw. So the sensor most likely has 14-15 stops of dynamic range - for still images. But, for video, it's probably less than the 13 stops of the bmpcc.

    This is a difficult comparison because these two cameras couldn't be more different. m43 sensor vs full frame. Cinema video camera vs. true hybrid stills/video. A purpose built film makers tool vs. a Swiss Army knife of imagery. The BMDPCC4K doesn't do everything, but what it does do, it does incredibly well. I know, I have a Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. BlackMagic knows their customer base and they listen to them. Sony ALSO knows their customer base, but they choose to just shove as much into their consumer electronics as they can, hoping that they'll make everyone happy, and they generally do. But that's why their button layout and menu system is a mess... there's SO much stuff packed into a Sony camera, you'll never figure out how to use it all. I know... I have a Sony camera, and I used it for 3 years on my channels. It's a great camera, but not always easy to use. Certainly, the Sony is the better camera for the general public. But BlackMagic wasn't making a camera for the general public. They made a nearly perfect camera at an incredible price for the indie/no budget film making market. At $1300, which includes the full version of Davinci Resolve ($300), it's hard to argue that the Sony is a better value, unless you're going to be using it as a stills camera more than as a video camera. Both cameras work out of the box. Both cameras work on a gimbal. Both cameras can deliver great looking video if lighting conditions permit it. The BMD is just better at more types of video recording situations. But it can't take a still capture for crap. It can't auto focus continually. And it can't do ANYTHING for more than 40 minutes on a standard battery. But oh, that screen!!! :)

    i want you to think about my comparison like this. What if you have a sony a7iii and is thinking about upgrading to get into raw. This is what im doing with all of my comparisons. Is it worth selling the a7iii to get the cheaper pocket 4k? What am i losing, what am i gaining. Im not comparing these just to see how the pocket 4k kills the sony a7iii.

    It depends what kind of stuff you shoot! I shoot with a Sony and also with a black magic in raw. I use my Sony more.. You are losing adaptability, you get huge file sizes, less battery life but a much better file to grade with. That isn't so necessary when you shoot it right first time though and your footage is just going to youtube... @@Jsfilmz

    The a7iii fixes the magenta shift big time. Sony colors are accurate in the new models. Colors straight out of camera are irrelevant because the moment you make adjustments in post, the look straight out of camera goes out the window. The BMPCC4k absolutely kills the a7iii though in terms of video quality. Coming from an a7iii owner. @@chosenideahandle

    @@treykeys2978 it doesn't absolutely kill video out of my a6300, so maybe that's a bit of an overstatement. It certainly has far better range from what I've seen, but it's not like most people here would see the difference under the right conditions. I'd prefer working with ProRes or RAW files over what Sony gives us for sure. Colours aren't accurate out of any camera. Every manufacturer has a look that's not attached to science, but to their brand. It's relative regardless. We're human, and see what we want at the end of the day.

    What I would like to see in the Sony A7SIII is the A9 with all firmware upgrades for autofocus, 4K 60p (obviousl), flippy screen, and 10 Bit 422 external HDMI out. The low-light high ISO on the A9 is already good enough. That way it will be as capable as the top of the line full frame mirrorless for stills and as a killer full frame cinema/video camera.. ALL in a tiny package. Add $500 to the A9 price tag as a premium.

But to be honest somehow I'm confused, I'm planing of upgrading my camera and it's still not clear to me what should i go for. my main use is macro photography, and i would like to make macro videos as well, and also shoot landscape nature usually wide shots. What's importent for me when looking on a camera is : color depth, photo res, and slow motion. What not important to me is low light cause usually it's controlled senerio, i can just add lights. I own nikon d5300 and all my lenses are nikon, but i can invest in speed booster. The cameras I'm considering are: gh5, canon d60/80, sony a7 one of the many version's or black magic.. The BMPCC4K is the best budget camera for serious filmmaking on the market now! No doubt! Don't forget BMRAW is coming soon! So You will be able to record internally into this format on BMPCC4K ( quality of RAW, size of ProRess ). No hybrid camera has this possibility now. I am very interested if GH6, A7SIII or FujiFilm XH-2 are going to record into BMRAW or ProRess RAW internally too or not. That will be game changer for me! If not I am going to buy BMPCC4K.

    Genuinely interested in your reasoning behind ProRes RAW not being RAW, as I'm looking to move to BRAW (Black Magic). As far as I'm aware the compression has nothing to do to the fact that a CODEC is RAW or not, but more to do with the fact that the extra METADATA is there to make adjustment to (what would normally be in camera) in post production?

  • @Jsfilmz

    @Jsfilmz

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes that is why im not sure how apple got away with naming prores raw prores raw. You cant change lets say iso in post everything is still baked in. Heres an excerpt " ProRes RAW is only an acquisition codec and, for now, can only be recorded externally using an Atomos Inferno or Sumo 19 monitor/recorder, or in-camera with DJI’s Inspire 2 or Zenmuse X7. Like all things Apple, the complexity is hidden under the surface. You don’t get the type of specific raw controls made available for image tweaking, as you do with RED. But, ProRes RAW will cover the needs of most camera raw users, making this the raw codec “for the rest of us”. At least that’s what Apple is banking on" Its pretty BS calling something RAW when its not lol

    While this is an interesting comparison, and I personally prefer the Pocket 4K, it would be well to mention 3 important things this camera is sadly missing: continuous autofocus, WiFi, and menu/set button (the 4K has only single autofocus). OK, I know, professionals are supposed to use manual focus. My company make film cameras for the film clubs for 30 years, and I swear by the simple manual machine vision lenses these cameras use. But Panasonic and Olympus lenses use small stepper motors to focus, and are not real manual lenses. In fact, some, like the 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 lack a focus ring entirely. Focusing must be done with the camera controls. Bad, very bad !!!!. Even though many of these lenses have a focus ring, it is not attached directly to the focus barrel, but, instead, to an encoder. There is a delay in operation. There are things like the FocusShifter follow focus, but let's face it, this is no Ziess Distagon. Anybody that knows club film camera knows they require a lens blimp for really quiet operation (below 24db). I was forced to design a highly functional system to control focus and aperture from the outside, and these potentially clumsy devices were eventually made to work well. OK, manual lenses for m43 exist, but they also have manual iris and changing lighting conditions are a problem (the film cameras had an option for an auto iris drive gear). Most camcorders, DSLR's, and mirrorless cameras today have WiFi. True, wireless SD cards are available (Tosiba Flashair, EZ Share, Transcend, Monoprice etc). These cards are curranty limited to 64GB. I use the Flashair, but I, like most people are finding that downloads over about 10 MB slow down to a crawl and stop. Reloading the driver restores operation for a while, but the problem quickly returns. What about USB? Full size A USB connectors have a life of 1500 operations. Pull it 10 times a day, you can send back for repair in 5 months. If the camera has a standardized USB connector (unlike the Panasonic GH1, 2, 3, and 4), smart people put an adapter on this port, and then throw the adapter away instead of the camera (the micro USB connector is rated for 8000 operations, much more tan the full size A). Many people I know had to throw away motherboards when the USB connectors became unreliable.

    I think one of the cons of Sony is that it's still have no 4096x2160 60p, or at least 3860x2160 60p... It's really hard to understand - GH5s has it, BMPCC 4k/6k has it, while Sony still don't want to add it... It seems like the same multi-year problem with Canon cameras and the lack of 1920x1080 60p (they added 1920x1080 60p only few years ago).

    Got the BMPCC 4K but sold it after 6 months and got the A7C instead. There were just too many caveats with the BM to make it worth it, using it was a real hassle. Some of the annoyances were: * The weight and size, it's huge and gets tiresome to use for extended periods without a tripod. * Battery life is not good, 30 minutes at most on a charge. Needed to swap several extra batteries on a shoot. * Auto exposure is really bad and jittery, so it's pretty much unusable. * Touch screen navigation is frustrating when using gloves, so shooting in the snow or in cold places is not great. * Low light isn't great, mostly because of the small micro 4/3 sensor. * Not weather sealed at all, so it was terrifying to use it outdoors on a cloudy / rainy day. * Durability wasn't great, got a few scratches in my bag after just a few uses (A7C still looks prestine, in contrast). * Auto focus does not exist on BMPCC, so that was probably the most annoying thing of all. All in all the images it produced were really nice, but there were so many annoyances surrounding it that it just wasn't worth the effort. Maybe for professional movie production (which it was designed for) but not for anything else.

    Now I realize from the footage, BMPCC 4k has sharper video quality, Sony looks to be digitally smoothed out. But it can be the difference of white balance. Can you do another test with both cameras and maybe include some other camera? But this time use a gray card to manually adjust the white balance. Sony's waxy skintones are good in photography when you want to do some heavy editing, but BMPCC 4K's skin tones seem to have more fined shadows.
