A song about the break up between Damon and his then long term girlfriend Justine. He said that performing it live was a tough on him, look up the live version they did on Jools Holland to see why, he can barely keep it together. Justine saw that performance and broke down in tears but she has remarked that if only Damon had put in the effort into making that song into making the relationship work, they'd still be together.

I actually wrote the lyrics to this song in a breakup note to my then-boyfriend. After six years, we had grown so far apart. However, he was still an extremely loving and decent person. It's just that we could do very little without it spilling over into an argument, and it felt like each of us was walking on thin ice. For these kinds of breakups, little to nothing "spoke" to me musically. There was no cheating. No Earth-shattering betrayals. It was just two people growing apart and neither of us was capable of changing for one another. I wasn't mad - just resigned. This song sums up those feelings so perfectly. The angriest I was willing to go was "I won't kill myself trying to stay in your life." And I genuinely want this person to meet someone who "settles down, stays around and spends more time with you (him)." For anyone who has broken up with a significant other and has felt not anger but only resignation - this song is for them.

The precision with which this perspective resonates with my current situation is just something special. And i wasn't even in a relationship with her. Just heavy feelings of infatuation that i knew i was required to suppress, to avoid making this into something it wasn't (Love). I wasn't in love her. They were merely narcissistic tendencies that I would find so difficult to resist during my interactions with her as a friend. At heart, all i wanted was to be capable of being a genuine friend while successfully dealing with my own narcissistic tendencies. I know, as of tonight, that it is not possible. Every time i thought i could beat those tendencies, I didn't. Now I know its not realistic to think i can stay friends with her without constantly trying to be the superior or the smarter or the more nonchalant or the more attractive person. Not with the exhilarating feelings over her that I have already experienced. I'm not even a narcissist like that, but just with her... due to the exhilarating experience of attracting her and impressing her that I had felt last year. I have tried one too many times to settle my mind for friendship and no more, but close friendship nevertheless, as she is one damn good of a person. And i pretty much have no such friend on whom I could emotionally rely on or confide in, because of how used to I was confiding to God (whom i stopped believing due to painful doubts and confusions, after years of relationship with 'Him'). The feeling of being loved that I lost after disconnecting with "God", I looked to feel from her. And it was selfish on my part, because she was just chilling and being a kind friend without getting too deep in friendship (she's never obligated to). Tonight I have decided. I will slowly let her go. Actually, it will be pretty quick. Give it a few months and we will have become old friends of distant memory, texting each other once or twice a year for the heck of it. This is good for me. And, although she might not know it, this is good for her. She'd be confused and perhaps just a little bit upset for a while, and then, due to her amazing ability to move on and forget me, she'll move on indeed! She'll be well. I will always love her deep inside, and I know that so will she (human to human, rather than lover to lover or friend to friend). The anger, bitterness, and resentment that I feel, have no valid reason. I don't feel them with conviction but with guilt rather. I disagree with those emotions, yet I can't seem to control them.. These are simply the cards that I've been dealt with. So, I'm not truly angry, bitter or resentful. But what I am, truly, is resigned. (thank you for creating an opportunity for me to vent. To anyone else, that above narrative might be confusing because i was all over the place with writing this. But, at least to me, this is help. Thank you.

nope. i think this song was made for Justine Frischmann (Damon's ex GF). they broke up because she cheated on him.. Damon found out that Justine was cheating with Suede's vocalist (Brett Anderson). the part of the lyrics "It's over, you don't need to tell me. I hope you're with someone who makes you feel safe in your sleeping tonight." is really explained how Damons feel :(

Natasha Febryana Justine was with Brett first, and they broke up because she was cheating on Brett with Damon. And her relationship with Damon was rocky for a while. Damon cheated on her a lot when they recorded the Blur album in Iceland but she stayed with him for a while after that. Also Damon really wanted to be a dad and Justine didn't want to have kids. Their break up was a long time coming.

Actually I heard the same thing. It was that Justine left Brett for Damon, after few years Damon wanted kids and she didn't, he cheated and both realized they wanted different things for future. He tried his best to convince her that they have a future, maybe even kids and wanted to be together till the end. Poor thing. Only option of happiness for them was to break up. Not any of their fault. Wrong timing and everything. He says he still finds it hard to sing this song. :(

michelle Welsh I don’t have it wrong. Damon has said he did heroin with Justine up until the making of the self titled Blur album in 1997. Then he stopped. A few songs on 13 are about how he either wanted Justine to get clean or that he couldn’t go on living w a junkie like in No Distance Left to Run. He never did heroin again. He talked about it during the press tour for Everyday Robots. He moved in w Hewlett, then he met Suzi, she got pregnant and they had Missy. He’s been clean for that time. He does smoke a lot of weed, admittedly and Hewlett has mentioned it too.

Always felt Damon and Justine’s relationship was like looking your first love.......sad it ended but the time together was amazing and something you only feel once
