Spot. On. I personally like long striping yarn because they've already figured out colors that compliment each other. Also, sometimes it's cheaper to buy that than the individual colors. I have no problem cutting it if I want to control the color changes.

I LOVE self striping yarn! I have sooo many cakes, its my favorite type of impulse buy yarn. I get excited when I'm hooking along and BAM new color! Also, I hate weaving ends so if I can get the colors changes without the ends im totally here for it!

I've crocheted for 65 years. I love the self striping yarn for simple projects that I donate to needy families. However if I have a project that is intricate, I choose individual colors that I control. Yarn Over, Mikey!!

A thing that I really appreciate about self-striping yarn is that the whole cake/skein generally has the same fiber content, weight, plies, etc. for all the colors. Even if I have to “edit” the changes (and sew in more ends), that is still easier than finding all the solid colors I’d like in the same yarn line!

I definitely agree with you that color control is critical for some projects or for some areas of a project. On other projects or sections of a project, allowing the color transitions to happen organically is charming and entirely appropriate. As you say, the maker needs the option of doing either - and should consider each approach as part of their final project look.

Putting colors together gives me anxiety! It really shouldn't be that hard but the struggle is real. There are soooo many shades of colors out there that making a few color selections for a project just about makes me cross eyed! That's why I appreciate when a company puts the ombre, stripes, cakes etc out.

I like the control of choosing my colour story. Usually I’ll control the colours even with self-striping yarn, but with a recent project I let caution go to the wind and let the colours take me where they will. It was challenging in the beginning but I enjoyed how few ends there were to weave into the finished blanket!

I totally agree with you on color controlling. Sometimes it's ok to just let the colors flow, but others, it really needs to be more controlled. I have also pulled cakes apart to control colors.😊

I like self changing yarn, especially the long striping ones, like caron cakes and Redheart ombre. They allow for more economical color play like with granny squares. It really depends on what the project is, but overall, they are a great choice ❤️ 😍

I agree Mikey. I love color coordination of the striping yarns. I started a blanket this weekend. At first I liked the color changes, but as the blanket became larger, the color shifts disrupted the cohesiveness of the project. Instead of a gift for a friend, it's now a blanket for my dog. He needed another one anyway.

Sometimes I want my colors to be specific. Sometimes I don't care. I don't have a problem with matching my colors. So when I am being fussy I will purchase individual colors. If I find a self striping ball that has colors that I like but I want to control the color change myself I will purchase solid color balls based upon the self striping ball. That's just how I play.😁

For my mind I prefer to control the colours unless the change is truly gradual, then I just let it flow. It really depends on what I’m crocheting. I love distinctive colours but the blend can produce a beautiful fabric.

Like you, it depends on the project. I generally don't use them because I need to color control most of time. the only time that I'd purchase it, is if the colors are too beautifully perfect, then I generally separate them to add them in where appropriate

Great video, Mikey! And I agree. Some cakes have a lovely color pallet, but I still want to control where and when the transition takes place. I tend to enjoy yarn that has a soft, gradual transition from one color to the next. But they are harder to find. So.....snip, join, weave in the ends and continue onward! 🙂🙃🙂🙃😉 Have fun!

Kinda reminds me of gardners. Some gardners will not stand for plants running around willy nilly. Some can let certain flowers spread (politely) around. Some can be ok with a frick'n' jungle in their yard!

What frustrates me is 2 to 3 colors I love in the self stripe that I can't find in a solid ball anywhere else and don't really care for the other colors. It can get very costly to only use half of a ball of yarn having to buy a bunch to finish a project.

I like self striping yarn but sometimes I need to color control depending the project. The blanket ogo annoyed me that it didnt transition colors nicely but instead it was tied and a knot. It made it more complicated to try to have enough of certain colors to make the snowflake afghan... then they wouldnt list the name of the colors on that ogo individually which drove me nuts because when the store didnt have enough of one colorway and i needed a specific grey or white or blue. I couldn't match it easily with other colorways, like London or Ocean... what 3 colors are these made of.

I'm cheap. If I have one Joann coupon for 50% off a regular item, I'm going to use it on a cake of yarn. If I don't like how it stripes and can 'cut and paste' along. (as long as I don't have to do it more than a few times in my project).

I can't help but wonder how they do that! It's not perfectly to-the-stitch line by line, but it always stripes. How do they make that happen when they don't know what we're making or how wide or long it will be? Even when I was a kid back in the (mumble mumlbe), I remember choosing a variegated lavendar and purple and it knit in a sort of diamond gingham shape.

I had never considered doctoring my yarn before seeing some of your ideas on it, but I’m absolutely going to utilize that concept for my next project! Thanks so much! It’s hard to even find other people talking about the concept, or at least, it has been hard for me to find anything on it. Any one have any suggestions on what to look up? I tried different combinations of things like, “doctoring” and “deconstructing” yarn, but it has given me so few options for research.

I agree and I always by way more urine than I need for something so I can have exactly what I want when I want it period I usually use six balls a yarn at a time when I'm doing something so I can have the right color, and because I can't get all the same dialots sometimes I have multiple balls of a color and change color every row so it just looks like that's the way the orange supposed to be if it's a slightly different view or tonality of the color.

Self-striping yarn for me is a total BOOT. I do appreciate some of the comments and the fact that for some patterns it works. But since I never know if it's going to work or not until I put in "the work", I have to say no to it. I HATE weaving in strands too. Many of my strands tend to work their way out with wash and wearing, and I'm forever tucking them back in again. It seems the larger yarns give me that problem and I hate it. I much more appreciate the smaller yardage skeins so that if I don't need a lot, I don't have to buy a lot. I'd much rather a company provide yardage options than to create a self-changing yarn that never changes when I where I want it to.
