Yeh, thanks for emphasising the fact that knowing the “right” scales, and even knowing the right notes that someone played for a certain solo, only gets you to the first base of sounding good. Tone, feel, intonation, groove, inflection and articulation are the things most people neglect in my experience. Nice little video Jay! 👍🏻

I’m so happy you found 😊😊😊😊
Yeah Man ..Always loved David Sanborn...hard not to be influenced by him.
Good one!! As a guitar player for a couple decades and doing sax for only a couple years, this makes sense. On guitar, there is a “one box” for pentatonic soloing that most guys use and it’s generally in the “minor blues” mode. To make it “major/country” taste all one needs to do is take the One Box backwards on the neck 4 frets and start from there. You just described the same thing by starting on the 6th. So thanks for that I never really took the time to learn the actual theory.
Happy New Year to all the Sax enthusiasts out there. Thanks Jay✌🏽🎵🎶🎷
Nice to see some truly applicable saxophone tips on this channel from a genuine pro!
Thanks for a great musical lesson...God bless you for this gift to all of us ...

Thanks for singing the lines that really helped me even though I am a guitarist... I always wanted to play a sax this is one of my fav sax pop solos . Could not figure Sanbourns solo until you explained demonstrated isolated playing and singing Thank you... Jay. God continued Blessings on you. And all your musical talents and Life.
Excellent lesson, Jay! David Sanborn is THE pop sax sound that everyone mirrors! I also like his short solo on David Bowie's Young Americans. Thank you!
Best Saxophoon teacher I have ever heard about, wow!
Fantastic sir
love these videos
I think it's super important to note that Sanborn is playing off the melody of the song. His solo fits so well with the song because of this. Sanborns rhythm fits the song as he plays off of James Taylors' phrasing also. Don't you think? Very appreciative of your videos, Jay. Thank you

You’re absolutely correct. As soon as I saw the analysis I know that’s a fact. Minor pentatonic is not what we think. We are just playing the blues off the melody. Off of the IV chord Dave plays a classic blues lick not related to the relative pentatonic either. This is blues played based on the melody. It’s all about hearing. Old school.
Great video Jay, the sax sounds great! Tríela enjoyed how you took the solo and broke it down for us. 👍

Hey dude great video
As a beginner, I have to say that I'm put off by terms like 'blues scale starting on the 6th' and 'pentatonic whatever'. I'm much happier learning some licks and major scales. By the way, I was truly inspired by your improvisation video from last year. Still having a lot of fun developing this side to my playing. Thanks.
good video. I have students, after they learn major and minor pentatonic scales, add the b5 to minor (blues scale) and b3 to the major (country blues scale). They seem to understand these pretty quickly.
Man I had fun with this.
It's the one from "Why ligatures matter"
Never really got on with advanced theory! I just learned the licks and styles by ear and hard knocks!
Excellent Video - Thanks! I wasn't able to do the download for some reason though. Never got the e-mail & not in spam folder.
Really great video! You answered a lot of questions I’ve had for a long time! My other question is that I know that some metal mouthpieces can be a bit more edgy than a hard rubber piece and I understand that it has more to do with the shape of the inside of the piece than the material itself and also with how you’re shaping your aural cavity. But I’ve never really been able to get that bright cutting sound from my hard rubber.
Great sound! I hear Hank Crawford...alot!

Hi, thanks for the great videos! I'd love a video on how guys like Sanborn 'split 'notes in the 'normal' register. It's not a growl,... and I can split certain altissimo notes, but they'll do it in the normal upper register. And quick advice in this possibly? Otherwise a video (maybe you have one already?) thanks
The dukoff D5 for playing Jazz is the best!!!!!!
I clicked on your links to purchase your recommended neck/mouthpiece & body swabs via your affiliate links. I appreciate your content so much, I feel it's the least I could do to support your channel. I also purchased a Jean Paul AS-400 through a 3rd party auction site, but it's missing a roller and has issues with pads/corks. Here's to wishing you a Happy New Year, Jay!

Hey Jay dig you man. Since you mentioned Maestri David Sanborn..have you considered a man I believe influenced his sound in great way..Hank Crawford..a rather unsung hero of Blues style Jazz alto saxophonist....excited about that Better Sax you playing Bro!!!
Great vid! What an awesome free lesso on pop/blues/funk soloing examples! I especailly liked how after explaining the nuts and bolts of how the minor triad is built on top of the major you say how even if they play it technically correct, it won't sound like David Sanborn. Then you went on to explain phrasing and melodic interpretation. Too often I hear players say they played a solo transcribed note for note, rhythm for rhythm but it didn't sound like the recording...That special nuance the player puts into their soling really gives them a fingerprint all their own! Love your material and makes me want to go back into the College/gig scene where we talked like this everyday! Thanks, Jay and Happy New Year!

I’m still trying to get that Sanborn sound. I got a Phil tone intrepid 6* but want to try a metal mouthpiece for that edginess.
I've heard this scale (major pentatonic with flat 3) referred to as a "major blues scale"... does anyone else refer to it the same way??
Sir,can you do a lesson on "silhouette" from Kenny g
I'm an 8th grader and recently discovered this channel while trying to find information on saxophone. I'm a percussionist but I really want to try something else. Since marching band is starting in summer of 2021, my parents aren't too optimistic that I'll be able to learn it while also being in marching band. Do you think you have any advice? Also, do music stores allow you to try out instruments anymore? (due to covid I don't know how they feel about it.)
Jay, FANTASTIC analysis. I've heard that called a "funk scale", too - the G pentatonic with a minor 3rd.

You might not see this comment but I was just wondering what your opinion about the brand cannonball? I’ve played on mine for nine years now🤣 I’m considering investing in a really good saxophone and honestly love mine. But I’ve just had so many mixed opinions from instructors over the years and wanted to know what you thought about it because I’m not really sure about what to do😂
Thanks

Great! They will be later in 2021.
There are too many missing parts in my music theory education. I guess I'm going to have to go back to college in order to benefit from this teaching.
Can you do in spane?
Jay: When will they come out with a Tenor sax?
As a new saxophonist - I got my new sax and I find that the left hand - number 1 and number 2 keys are much flatter than the others and I have to consciously make a bit of effort to correct them with my embouchure . ( that is when 1 - 2 or both are pressed and 0 on right hand ) There is another problem - the right hand 1, when 1 2 3 of left hand are pressed - it always try to flutter madly and I have to move farther out from the mouthpiece to quell it . I can manage these 3 troubles - I guess, however it is a nuisance . And I wonder what else I may find when I press some of the other keys in future . Is this usual for any given ( cheap ) sax ? Should I send it back and get a different one ? I used a cane reed and a synthetic and have the same troubles . And a third problem : When I use the tuner - it seems that most everything is too sharp - finding it difficult to bring it down . I moved the mouthpiece out some but then I got an air leak and had to push it back in . Maybe I can move the neck out some from the body ?
He Jay, i tryed to order your Better sax sax. Bud i am in spain and i can not order from here. What is the problem¿. Cant you send them here?..pls let me know what we can do, i am shure you have alote of people in europe that like to know.. thanks and keep up the good work.
Is there a tenor "better sax" option?
Hi. Is this pdf still available? I'm logged in but can't find it. Thanks
Why is the transcription in tenor?
I am a lot confused in all that information, Where do I start at ,how much does this cost me John Mitchell
I didn’t see the discount for purchasing Sax in full. Plus tax.✌🏽🎵🎶🎷
Can you recommend a tenor sax and a mouth piece for an average player, thats better for the blues sound.
Please put the alto transcription when you play alto. Please
That major 6 is part of the blues scale as far as I'm concerned. How can you not play it over a IV?
But why does it sound like you're playing an octave higher than the actual notes on the staff...is it E1 or E8?.. major 6 or 13??? What I mean is when you were playing the thirds with the accent on the 2's.. the notes on the staff are in the first octave... But what I'm hearing is 2nd octave... Btw..Love the Better Sax Alto.. sounds really nice.

Disregard, I see why... Lol.. smh... Cheers..
Thank you for your videos. But I'm confused. At the 4 minute mark you start to play the alto. The music that is displayed is not what you are playing. You start on high G#; the music notation starts on a B and is in an entirely different key. You are playing in the key of E, correct? Am I missing something?
The notes doesn't correspond to the pitch you are playing so are the notes written in concert C thanks would I have to transpose to The key Thanks
Missing the grace notes

This is way out of topic but has anyone encountered a cat that does not like saxophone? I have a adorable little black cat that just do not like me playing sax. At first I thought it was a coincidence but no. She walks up to me and bite my toe or walk past me with this really starry look or as today just clinge to my leg and bury both her claws and teeth into it. It is more than annoying, I am not that bad!
Get to the point Thanks
Jay 99% of your stuff is amazing, but the rhythm in the notation of this transcription is really bad compared to what you're actually playing Edit: OK it's actually dead on to the original solo, just a slightly out of time spot threw me off.

Care to be more specific? Which rhythm doesn’t look correct to you and how would you write it then?
@ilikemusak
3 жыл бұрын
@@bettersax OK, on closer inspection and listening to the original, actually the rhythm is fine, though i might quibble with not marking swung very. Statute eighths...I think what the me off is that the first 2 bars are kind of out of time, or rather the second bar seems off tempo from the first. It sounded like you hit the phrase in bar 2 early, and those three notes came out kind of triplitized, so it sounded like it should be "rest (2)trip let 3" there. I rescind my comment and will edit to clarify, sorry!
