Wayne, thanks for your efforts and success for bluebirds. I too am a advocate of providing habitat for bluebirds in my community. I currently have 6 boxes at my church, which has an open landscape. Last year all the boxes had clutches approx. 3 times last year contributing over 60 baby birds in our area. Not to brag, but I'm really excited about this. I'm in the process of adding 11 boxes at my high school landscape , which it too has perfect landscape for bluebirds. I use the 1/2" electrical emt conduit method for my post on the boxes, and the 8" round galvanized steel, 2' long round Steel Round Duct Pipe with wire mesh in side to prevent snakes and other predators form climbing the pole to the box. thanks again for your efforts!

When you put dry concrete in hole, tamp it hard with a tamping bar, 2x4, etc. no bracing needed. Can use immediately. No waiting for concrete to harden. Set many deck posts this way. Tom

I'm sure that would work but when setting one post, especially a pipe, it would be better to brace it for a few days. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

My blue birds will build new nests right on top of their old nests in the blue bird house every year. About every three years before the blue birds show up, I will clean out the old nests from the house.

One thing you might want to consider, cleaning out the old nest reduces the number of parasites in the nest. Mites and lice lay eggs in nesting material. Leaving the old nest provides a whole batch of parasites that would be ready to attack a new set of baby birds. Thank you for visiting our site and have a great day.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. I have a question. I have a bluebird house in our backyard but it is mounted at 7’9” high. Is it too high? How high is it supposed to be?

  • @DIYwithWayne

The recommended height is roughly 4 to 6 feet. If I were you I would not move it. If you want to move it wait until the fall. Bluebirds will scope out places to build during the winter. If they picked your house and you move it, they may look for another place. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

We have done that as well in the past but it will wear off over time. The baffle is a long term fix but cost more. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

@@DIYwithWayne Those baffles are simple to make from sheet metal. After you cut its round shape, make a straight cut from the outside to the center of the circle. Then cut your small pipe hole. Then overlap the straight cut which will make it form into a cone and screw the overlap to hold it together.

Great video, will it keep snakes out of box?

Probably not. To prevent a large snake from reaching the nest requires a cone baffle that’s 36 inches in diameter. Better to use a torpedo baffle that’s designed for raccoons and snakes, which is 28 inches long and about 8 inches in diameter. You can make one with stovepipe or buy one from Woodlink.

They’re very simple to make from sheet metal. Maybe takes 5 to 10 minutes. I tell how in the comments above. I’ve done A/C sheet metal work most of my 57 years of life.
