Bluebell Railway - Diamond Jubilee Event - Part 1

The Bluebell Railway is back to normal with its delayed Jubilee Celebratory Event marking the lifting of Covid restrictions, aptly referred to as 60 + 1 because as it wasn’t possible to hold the event last year. Once again it is possible to hop on and off trains to visit stations along the way. We start early in the day with a visit to the Sheffield Park Engine shed to see the excellent display of historic locomotives on static display, before passing through the shed to see locomotives being prepared for the busy day ahead, the smell of hot oil and steam hangs in the damp morning air reminiscent of the days when steam ruled the nations rails. There aren’t many people around, the only sounds are the gentle hiss of escaping steam along with a bit of humorous banter between the engine crews and natures tuneful dawn chorus. By now the rain was falling heavily as we cross the footbridge onto platform 2 for a good view of the various shunting operations required to get all the locomotives and rolling stock into position. To mark this special event two rakes of beautifully presented vintage carriages are extracted from to new carriage shed, the Metropolitan set with the GNR Director’s Saloon and a representative rake of LBSCR and SECR vehicles including a Birdcage Carriage. Having watched the first two trains of the day set off towards East Grinstead we join the third. There is nothing quite like sitting back in the comfy seat of a veteran railway carriage, gently rocking and swaying as the pretty Sussex countryside drifts by. The remnants of the old Ardingly line come into view, indicating we will shortly be arriving at the impressive Horsted Keynes station, boasting five platforms it often appears on film and TV with numerous different names applied to the station name boards, I almost expect Poirot to shuffle towards the first class compartment of an approaching train. The restored platform canopies make a welcome addition to the station as the weather remains changeable, one moment the sun shines beckoning people out to the platform ends to get that special photo and then the heavens open sending everyone scurrying back to the relative safety of the platform awnings. The weather isn’t dampening people’s joy at being free to enjoy the railway in a way that hasn’t been possible for close on two years. There is plenty going on at Horsted Keynes with a shunting display featuring the railway’s 09 class locomotive, there are also brake van rides to the station limits and for all the wannabe engine drivers, there is the opportunity to drive the carriage and waggon works resident Sentinel diesel shunter. In the car park and paddock there is a children’s funfair, a display of old tractors, live music and a number of vans and huts selling fresh cooked local produce. I really enjoyed listening to “Orange Sunshine” as they played a selection of songs from my youth. A copyright match prevented me from including their music in this video, although I did upload a test video to KZread, if you’d like to hear “Orange Sunshine” please click on this link - • Orange Sunshine - Copy...
This video covers Part 1 of this memorable day, Part 2 will follow shortly. The real heroes of the day were all the volunteers and staff who steered the railway though the dark days of the pandemic to make this celebration of the railway’s reawakening possible. To everyone who kept the railway alive, I’d like to say a massive thankyou and to those who weren’t able to visit over the weekend, next time you are at a loose end pop on down, because I know you will be welcomed with open arms as the railway seeks to recover. Locomotives featured on the day - SER Stirling 01-class 0-6-0 No.65, SR Maunsell Q-class 0-6-0 No.30541, South Eastern & Chatham Railway H-class 0-4-4T No.263, BR Standard Tank Class 4MT 2-6-4T No.80151, Class 09 diesel shunting locomotive No.D4106/09018, Sentinel 4-w Diesel-Hydraulic loco No.10241. Track gauge of 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) Some sound effects were taken from Epedemic Sound’s ever increasing Sound effects Library.

Hi Tim nice to see the beautifully restored machines. I am especially chuffed to see the traction engine Olive. There is one hereabouts and it turns up in the local outdoor shows. Ah the Cook Strait ferry that bought back a few memories. Once the sea was so rough we were surfing up and down the waves. You could understand where the expression shivering timbers came from. Me I was outside in the wind hanging on for dear life and enjoying every moment. We are going from lockdown to lockdown over here in the kangaroo country. I have taken up building model ships from Laser cut kits. I am doing Shackleton's boat the Endurance at the moment to keep the old brain busy. Nice to chat take care.

Hello John, I hope you are keeping well, over here we are throwing caution to the wind and relying on the Covid vaccine doing its job, for now things are working out, allowing us to attend events such as this one, it was great to get back to near normality. We have been told that limited restrictions are likely to be re-introduced over the winter period to reduce pressure on the National Health Service. Covid isn't going away, so we are finding ways to live with it, it's going to be interesting to see how Australia and New Zealand adapt to living with Covid, Isolation is working, but it can't really go on forever. It's always nice to see other exhibits from the past such as the tractors and traction engines present at events like this. Hopefully I'll be attending a 50's weekend at the Mid Hants Railway at the end of this month with 50's cars and buses on display, along with people raiding their wardrobes for tank tops and baggy trousers to dress in keeping with the period. I've crossed the Cooks Straight 5 times and every time the sea has been as calm as a mill pond, although I've seen YT videos showing crossing in atrocious weather, one shows damage caused to almost every camper van on board. I have crossed the English Channel in aweful weather, one crossing that sticks in my mind was one of the last car carrying Hovercraft sailings that took 2 hours instead of 30 minutes, unlike a boat there is no real view of the sea and the passenger compartments are either side of the craft which really exaggerates the swell, I felt sorry for the stewardesses who spent the whole trip giving out and retrieving sick bags. On the other hand the hydrofoil from Newhaven to Dieppe is really exciting when the sea is rough, the opening of the Channel Tunnel has really changed the way we travel to Continental Europe. I haven't made the crossing by sea for over 15 years. Laser model kits have added a new dimension to model-making, it's good to keep busy. Take care. Tim.

Isolation has had a dramatic effect on cases of the flu over here, it has almost been wiped out. A lot of retail outlets still ask customers to wear masks, resulting in about a 50:50 split between those wearing and not wearing masks. The Premier League football season has kicked off now with virtually no Covid restrictions, although the big cities are suffering more cases than us plebs out in the sticks, hopefully the vaccine and subsequent booster jabs will keep us safe. I hope Oz achieves its target of 80% vaccinated by Xmas, because it will enable the country to start opening up again. Throughout Europe and much of the world locomotives were fitted with dynamos capable of running electric lights as seen on the front and back of many locomotives. In the UK early steam engines were built before electric lighting was common place, instead they used oil lights at night and white discs in the day or a combination of both. These discs/lights also indicated whether the train was an express passenger train, a local passenger train or a freight train. The system was never modernized hence why electric lights never replaced oil lamps on British steam locomotives.

Hi, Neil sorry about the ads, I do reduce the number of mid roll ads, but when I eliminate them the video doesn't get promoted by KZread, I understand they are in it to make money, but mid roll ads haven't increased my earnings, I preferred it as it was with ads at the beginning and end. I think the main reason for all the ads is to persuade people to stump up for KZread Premium.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I'm not touching KZread Premium! As for mid-roll ads, I don't think you have any say in where the ads are placed. They're just shoved in willy-nilly by KZread.

@@neilforbes416 I think for people who watch a lot of KZread, Premium is worth considering. There is an option to place or remove ads, its called something like mid roll placement towards the bottom of the ad page when a new video is uploaded, although the ability to change things can sometimes be dependent on the number of subscribers, things have changed a lot since I started, my second channel was de-monetized because it did not have enough subscribers.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I have only a small number of subscribers and I don't upload regularly, I only upload when I have something to upload. And with Covid the way it is here at the moment, my video shooting opportunities are scarce. I watch KZread to get away from the mindless barage of gimmick-laden garbage ads on commercial TV, and those moronic "reality(?)" shows but sadly, the Ad-Block function on my AVG Secure Browser has packed it in and won't work anymore. I *don't* want KZread Premium, I've got no way to pay for it anyway as I don't subscribe to PayPal(frankly, I *don't* trust PayPal). I just wish KZread was *NOT* so damn *greedy!*

@@neilforbes416 I know what you mean about getting new content, I haven't been able to travel overseas on a rail-tour holiday now for over 18 months, instead I've been uploading my recent tours of New Zealand, they are travel videos rather than rail videos, as a result my viewing figures and earnings have plummeted. With the easing of lock-down restrictions, heritage railways in the UK have started to operate again giving limited access to rail based content. I have two trips booked, one staying in hotels in Devon (England) the other, a rail tour to Germany, although Covid could still cause that to be cancelled. TV in the UK isn't good, adverts are mostly political, people who are not aware of the make up of Britain's population should be forgiven for believing that more than half of of the population is black and that most couples are multiracial, because that is how Britain's population is portrayed in TV ads, the rest of the adverts are for charities guilt tripping you into giving every spare penny you have to some charity that pays its own staff eye-wateringly high salaries, one of the worst being Save the Children. My chosen charity is "The Salvation Army" because they do a good job looking after people who have fallen on hard times, its worth remembering that most of the population is only 10 wage packets away from being in financial difficulty. The Sally Army put my donation to good use at the coalface, not paying some middle class do-gooder an inflated, undeserved wage. The rest of TV is repeats and reality tripe. I am forced by law to pay for the BBC although I never watch it, I chose to watch Netflix and KZread simply because they show what I enjoy watching. As for PayPal, I use it all the time because it makes online shopping safe, they have refunded me my money on a number of occasions when things have gone wrong, on one occasion I bought a drone from the USA costing over £1000, it failed after one month, the supplier didn't want to know, I contacted PayPal who refunded me in total. Ad blocker isn't really fair on KZread creators who rely on KZread earnings to make a living, I don't make my living on KZread, but it does make a useful contribution to my travelling. It seems fair to me that KZread gives you a choice, either pay a reasonable charge to watch Ad free or watch free with Ads, although I agree Ads should be limited so as not to spoil the viewing experience.
