Blue Moon - Tommy Emmanuel (cover by Tim Van Roy)

Музыка

Here it is, one of Tommy's biggest crowdpleasers! This little tune will stick in everyone's head long after the final note has been played. And the best part of all: it's not as (extremely) difficult as it may sound!

    Tim, wanna-be finger style guitarist will love to see themselves playing a beautiful repertoire of finger-style tunes. Your teaching style; fretting, applicable finger/thumb playing technique and your demeanor make guitarist feel they can do it. Song selection is paramount. Tunes you started with are ideal: • Blue Moon • Wind & Warm • Somewhere Over The Rainbow (mentioned for later this year) I can’t help but request “Mississippi Blues” (Some hot licks played by Clive Carroll) • Alley Cat (a catchy, CATCHY, melody) you’ve got the ear and know-how to assemble a great arrangement. Listing these tunes make me feel selfish. We can get as good as we’d like to be...the question is...how much time are we going to spend practicing. I plan a lot of time practicing and really appreciate you taking what would be impossible for me to figure out and making it doable. Glenn

    @@buianhduc298 For songs like this it's probably better to use a thumb pick over a flat pick. Tommy spoke how he used to play hybrid picking at first and then he realised that Chet Atkins was using a thumbpick and it made sense. But you can do either, it will just sound different and some things will be harder to play. Using a thumbpick is odd at first but if you stick to it, it gets much easier. I agree with Jak and Bubbles: good things can come from trying things your own way, but it doesn't hurt to be able to play it the "right" way either. And indeed, the main thing to take away: if it sounds good, it is good! And Đức, if you're already messing around with TE songs after 1 year of playing the guitar then that is quite a progression! Remember there is no rush, you have all the time to get it all down!

  • @thomasandresen8373

    Beautifully played. I've just started to learn the piece. I'm having great difficulty achieving the "click" effect with my thumb to accent the backbeat. I have a guitar with an action slightly below standard, but I find it impossible to get the click sound without striking the string really hard. Mainly because even with a fairly low action the strings are still quite far from the fretboard. I actually find it quite puzzling because I see Tim strike the string very lightly. There has to be some kind of finesse to this technique I'm missing. Anybody else had the same issue and worked out an alternative technique?

  • @TimVanRoy

    @TimVanRoy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Thomas! I think it probably has to do with the action, or that would at least be the first thing I would check out. I don't know if you measure things in inches or mms, but have a look at my "Top 5 Tips to Play Like Tommy" video. There is a chapter in there on Tommy's guitar setup, and it will allow you to check your current setup. The finesse to the technique is doing it really light, most people slap the guitar way too hard, making it difficult to pick up the rest of the part again.

  • @thomasandresen8373

    @thomasandresen8373

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TimVanRoy Hi, Tim. I think you are right. I guess there is no such thing as standard action for an acoustic guitar, it all depends on the player. Still, when you buy an acoustic from a shop it will have a "standard" setup which is fairly high compared to Tommy Emmanuel's setup. I guess it's like that so you can use the guitar for both strumming and fingerstyle playing. I have a background in classical guitar and traditionally the strings are very far from the fretboard. You can say the strings and the fretboard have different zip codes ;-) So I'm used to that and like that you can pick really hard and hear the note "blossom" and not buzz out. But I want to learn new stuff and in order to do that I realize I need to do some compromises and adapt my playing. I'll check the video you suggested and take my guitar to a technician. Thank you for your response. I appreciate the hard work you put into your tutorials. Your tutorials are fantastic. They are methodical and informative. Exactly the right balance between music and technique. They are simply the best around. Your videos also have a very positive and “patient” vibe and they bring me so much joy and inspiration. Thank you so much!

  • @TimVanRoy

    @TimVanRoy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@thomasandresen8373 Hi Thomas! I'm pretty sure that most acoustics are shipped with a setup that is mostly aimed at heavy strumming. If you would set up factory guitars for fingerstyle they probably wouldn't sell because they would buzz all over the place when played by 99% of non-fingerstyle guitarists. When it comes to classical guitars that wide gap between strings and frets is necessary because a nylon string has a much wider vibration path compared to a steel string. So go ahead and check that action, I'm convinced the solution to your problem can be found there!
