Blood on the risers LYRICS (Gory gory what a helluva way to die)

Song: Blood on the Risers (Gory gory what a helluva way to die)
From: US Army
"Blood Upon the Risers" is an American paratrooper song from World War II. It is associated with all current airborne units, including the 101st Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, the 173rd Airborne Brigade and 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) of the 25th Infantry Division, and the 120th CTS (United States) as well as British airborne units. It is known as "Mancha Roja" (Spanish for "Red Stain") in airborne units from multiple Latin American countries. In Spain it is called "Sangre en las cuerdas" ("Blood upon the risers" in English).
This song has been featured in the television miniseries Band of Brothers, the television series Preacher, and the video game Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, and was also mentioned in Donald Burgett's book Currahee!: A Screaming Eagle at Normandy. Sung to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", the song tells of a fatal training jump of a rookie paratrooper whose parachute fails to deploy. This results in him falling to his death.
The song is also a cautionary tale on the dangers of improper preparation of a parachute jump. The protagonist does everything right, but forgets to hook up his static line which would automatically deploy his main parachute; upon discovering this error during the jump, he deploys his reserve chute in bad falling position with disastrous results. As the reserve chute is stored in a belly bag on the World War II-era rig, deploying it in a bad falling position could easily lead to an accident, not unlike the one described in the song. "Risers" are the four straps that connect the suspension lines of the parachute canopy to the parachute harness.

I learned this song while in jump school at Fort Gordon. Every time the original "Battle Hymn of the Republic" song is played/sang (in church or where ever) I automatically start to sing "gory gory what . . . " If my wife is sitting beside me instead of being in the choir, I get a swift-hard elbow in the ribs. Probably the best training I ever got in the Army was the PLF (airborne troops will know what that means). I'm 81 now, and sever4al times in the past 10 years or so, I have automatically gone into the PLF and it saved me from injury. ALL THE WAY

Musashi Miyamoto said that a warrior must accept the thought of himself beheaded, stabbed, pierced with arrows, and blown apart by gun fire to lose the fear of death. To basically understand what he's getting into, and accept the possibility of dying in so many horrible ways. In a way, accepting his own mortality. I'm guessing that's what this song was for, to show the airborne guys the kind of possible death that came with the trade.

More like a cautionary tale about jump procedure. "His static line unhooked". Was the primary reason for the accident. It used to be you disn't deploy your chute like skydivers do today. The Static Line was a line you hooked to the plane before jumping. The act of jumping out the plane pulled on the Static and primed the chute for opening. Rookie cadet forgot it and jumped. They have a reserve parachute in case the first one fails for wathever reason. I don't know if it was a pilot chute to pull out the main chute like skydivers do today or if a separate spare chute. But they don't just "step out" of the plane. There's a proper way to jump out they train over and over again before the real jumps, to make sure the main chute deploys withouth incident or in this case, so the reserve chute deploys instead of getting tangled in their legs. This is a great song not just for morale, but to make tgem remember their training. Lest they have one helluva way to die.

My Uncle (RIP ~no, he passed away at age 89) said he'd take pay to jump for others. He said by time he was 30 his knees were already killing him, but he retired as E9. My dad was a bombardier in B24. Got shot down twice: first time aboard A Liberator was a late substitute- blew out of the sky during Ploesti Raid ( MIA 42 days). After recovery, back with his crew, they were hit repeatedly. Since he had prior bailing out experience AND crew was abandoned by officers, the enlisted depended on my dad to show them how to bail out as they were trying to keep the plane up (they threw everything heavy out). The story is published. Hello to all. I'm the last of the family from the Army and 101st. The rest are Air Force. My dad is still with us at 96 yrs old and drives a Sports car

ALL THE WAY

"He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock. He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he fell the awful drop". This verse haunts me the most. Not the graphic description of the gore, not the sad thoughts about his girlfriend - THIS one. Just imagine: jumping out into the ice-cold sky from a roaring plane, focusing on counting off the seconds after having learned the timing of when you should feel the shock from the chute deploying. And when the moment comes... nothing happens. You look over your shoulder and don't see anything. The static line should have deployed the chute by now, but the chute is not there. The freezing wind whistles as your fall speed increases. You forgot about the static line. Overwhelmed with panic, you frantically yank the reserve cord, not remembering a thing about the falling position instructions. You feel your movements restricted as it deploys all around your limbs. This is it.
