Blog vs YouTube vs Podcast: What should you start?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Trying to decide if you should start a KZread channel, blog, podcast, or something else? Well, today we get some advice from Pat Flynn, who's done ALL THREE of these things -- and quite successfully!
Pat shares his experience running a podcast, blog, and KZread channel, explains which one has had the biggest impact on his business, which is the easiest, and more. To top it all off, he gives his recommendation on which one YOU should start for yourself.
Hope you enjoy!
P.S. In case you're wondering just how many videos Pat and I did together, well... this one is the last. I hope you've enjoyed these three episodes he joined me for as much as I did!
Who should I have as a guest next??

I've been debating between starting a blog or a KZread channel and I've dabbled in both for a few months now. What I found is that I have serious anxiety issues when it comes to showing up on camera and a blog seems more doable in terms of consistency for me. I don't think I am capable of creating good videos despite having ideas of what to talk about because scripting, recording and editing is a steep learning curve for me and I haven't overcome that hill yet. With KZread, I deal with: 1. Anxiety 2. Resources(videos, images and music) + computer's ability 3. Editing(watching myself is not easy and going over the nuances of the video is fairly challenging) With blogging, I deal with: 1. Basic blogging learning curves like getting a domain(done), a theme(done), email collection(not done). 2. Depth of content(which I prefer over KZread because of my fickle nature - I can go deeper and edit on the go even when the article has been published) 3. Website technicalities(I learned so much about genesis and child themes which was pretty easy) I am leaning towards a blog, currently because I feel that it gives me more freedom to create content because I can remove myself as in my image from the equation. I hope 2020 will be a good year for my blog!

There is a whole subset of folks that would not be able to get much out of a podcast without a transcript: those of us that don't process verbal information as well as visual information, people who are hearing impaired. I recommend providing transcripts if you are planning to do a podcast, or at the very least a list of important takeaways. I've actually ended up looking up things brought up in a podcast on youtube or just a google search b/c I was interested in it but was not able to process what they were about it, and needed to about it to understand it. That's why I so appreciate the content in Start Up Society, b/c it gives both.

I actually watched “Passive Income” while I was on Temporary Employment Hiatus (my term for Unemployed) 3 years ago. When I was Seeking to transition into something else; career wise. Good to see this now as it has ignited something in me. Oh by the way I did get a new job, but it is just paying the bills...no satisfaction just survival.

Personally, I believe that filming the podcast is VERY beneficial because I'm on KZread many hours of the day and love the binge watch things at night. So I would much rather watch and listen to the podcast on KZread, than sit in my bed and listen to a podcast. Plus I'm a visual person. I love to watch while listening to see expressions etc. I think you can grow both platforms (podcast channel and KZread channel) so much faster by cross promoting the video & audio so much more too. I see the points you brought up in this video but I just never go onto apple podcast apps because I'm at home with my kids all day and rarely ever leave the house, although I could walk around with it on my phone just not as accessible for me.

I know you're only really supposed to focus on one at a time, but now that I know how to run my YT channel, I'm starting to look into relaunching my CreationDepot podcast as well. It seems like a lot of content management, but now that I know how to batch content, it will still busy, but reasonable. My biggest hurdle right now is getting my audience together, and I think these are the two platforms I need to focus on to accomplish that.

Great info, but you got one thing wrong about audiences. I listen to podcasts on KZread with a single slide up ALL the time, as do a lot of people. (Most Abraham Hicks videos are like that and they are wildly popular.) Of course no one is gonna sit there & watch a single slide like you said, but these days people often don’t sit and watch the video anyway. We have it on while driving, cleaning, showering, doing errands, etc. I often favor those kinds of videos, because I’m off the hook from having to stop everything else and watch my phone, and I can go about my day doing things while listening.
