One tip we have done to decrease our exposure to dust mites: 1) We purchased extra pillow covers, so that every night we zip one on the pillow - and in the morning we take it off and toss in the laundry. We liken them to "head underwear". The ones we got were the from our local Swedish-international-goods furniture store. This had the biggest effect we found, as most of your breathing while sleeping takes place on a pillow. 2) Sleep in some light pyjamas, and change them every night / second night. Your pyjamas will absorb most of the dead skin preventing them from flaking onto your sheets. 3) In the morning, we pull the covers and roll them at the foot of the bed. This helps to aerate and dry out the sheets - there is litterature on this showing it helps reduce mites as it lowers ambient humidity - especially if there's a lot of sunlight shining on the mattress. 4) Invested in a good steam mop / steam cleaner. The kind that is quick and easy to use so its not much of a hassle to pull it out and quickly give the floor a once-over. We give the mattresses a good once-over bi-weekly before we flip them. 5) Made some DIY air filters (Corsi-Rosenthal) out of a box fan, one in each bedroom - and have them on a timer so they only go on during the waking hours, when everyone is walking about kicking up dust. Lastly (probably the least effective) - we got one of those little vaccum robots for the main floor. It helps as it gets under a lot of furniture we would have to move around to vaccum underneath. It was expensive, though. We were thinking of upgrading the home to a whole-house vaccum system (that exhausts air outside) but the cost is very steep.

Thank you so much for this video. I never really thought about it, but it does make sense that if you improve your surroundings then your symptoms will improve. I’ve had asthma since I was around eight or nine years old. My parents never prioritised my health by doing any of these tips you provided, they just gave me medication. I’ve almost died from an asthma attack four times in my life. now as an adult, I’m going to do this for myself.

Good advice. You can get mattress and pillow encasings that are breathable but the pores are so small that dust mites and their allergens are kept inside. If you have a new mattress or pillow the encasings will prevent dust mites from entering them. They definitely do work which is why allergy consultants recommend them. 👍 There is one supplier that supplies these encasings to the NHS

One conclusion that I came to was that if dust settles then I need to leave it on the floor when I get into bed. Otherwise, when I go to the bathroom or fridge I am loading up my feet with fresh dust to inoculate my clean sheets when I get back into bed. I put socks on each time I get up and take them off before I get back in. Free hotel slippers can also be used. Another tip is to hit every source, sheets, carpets, clothes, curtains, etc. at once otherwise the critters quickly migrate back to where they were living before you cleaned. One advantage of this is that it boosts your morale when you feel all of the benefits in one go. My worst symptom is “brain fog” after a night in a dusty bed. Thank you so much for posting this video.

For those of us in US optimal temp is approx. 68-77F, dust mites die in 133-140F, My next mattress will have a zip off cover that I can wash. I sprinkle my carpet with ditomaceous earth and leave for an hour or two before vacuuming. It's supposed to dry out the mites. I also use a pandemic style mask while cleaning.

Thanks Vik, very interesting video as always! I'm curious though if a congested nose can cause/contribute to UARS? In your YT Short a few weeks ago on UARS you mentioned that UARS is not caused by nasal breathing problems, but rather by a problem at the back of the throat. I am wondering though if a congested nose doesn't cause the tongue base to be sucked back because of the low pressure it creates, an example of the Venturi effect. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this and, as before, a more in-depth video on UARS (in addition to your existing one) would be very much appreciated! Cheers

As a single bloke if I wake up with a 'morning cold' (that's my name for it) gone by mid day, it's time to vacuum the bedroom and change my bed linen. Will investigate the extra filter. I usually leave the duvet over the banister during the day and give it a shake over the stairs. In my twenties all i had was a matress on the floor, amazingly putting mattress on a bed raises you above the layer of dust, and reduces allergies. All learning as we wander through life. I'm afraid it is quite complicated. Look at my recent videos on surgery for sleep apnoea and national guidelines etc. Unblocking your nose will make you feel better but won't improve your sleep apnoea. If the steroids have been prescribed then I would take them, but speak to your surgeon about it.

@@VikVeerENTSurgeon can you speak more to this doctor? If an occluded nose is the primary issue causing sleep apnea, why wouldn’t resolving that also resolve the apnea?

Happy new year! Will household items never become dusty if we use an air purifier? My cousin sister always keeps everything in the house clean, does not allow even a little dust to settle on it, is this a mental illness or dust mites allergy?

I guess it depends on to what extent she keeps the home clean. There is a line when people will wonder if she has OCD or something. I think an air purifier would reduce the amount of dust settling.

I watched your vlog from two weeks ago. I can not use cpap it gives me a sore throat and chest. I am clinically obese. But I just can not use cpap and it doesn’t make me feel better in the morning. I still feel tired. I can drive still as I only go out if I feels alert. My hospital whipps x Hospital sleep clinicians have said I need to wear cpap. But I just get claustrophobic and I get frustrated with it. I end up taking it off after maybe 5 hours then falling back to sleep without it. I get stuffed up nose really bad crusted blocked nose. I’m scared I will lose my license as this is the threats I get from the sleep clinic and my own doctor. I’ve not been using it properly for the last 3 months. Mine hasn’t been changed either it’s still on recall. But a few years ago I was told the back of my nose needs to be chiselled. I’m going to get my doctor to refer me to see you. I was referred before but it was during covid lockdown. I’d be happy to try another device other than cpap. I will get a purifier in the meantime. I must admit I’m on antihistamine tablets for life. And I take other medications because I’m disabled also. But I really want to be referred to see you. I need my license to drive. But I don’t need the pressure to use cpap if it makes me mentally frustrated and angry and claustrophobic.

Sounds like you don’t have anyone truly helping you out and problem solving how to tolerate cpap. You may be on the wrong pressure, having mouth leaking, wrong humidity settings, etc. if you want to take charge of your own health I’d suggest watching thelankylefty here on KZread, he does a great job helping problem solve cpap. You may also want to join a cpap forum like cpaptalk to get help. There’s help out there, you just gotta be proactive.

@@HappyCupsInc I’m going to make an appointment with my doctor to refer me to London ENT again. It’s not the pressure. I can not tolerate CPAP at all. I used it a few weeks ago and ended up with throat and chest pain. Before that I just got headaches. Cpap does not make me wake up feeling the joys of spring. I need something else as cpap just isn’t for me. But ty for advice.

4:20 Dustmites should simply drown during a regular load of washing in a top loader, so cold water is sufficient in that instance.

Apparently not, they don't really drown as they aren't quite the same as us. I'll add a reference to my ebook just to be sure.

@@VikVeerENTSurgeon Thanks for the reply, conventional internet wisdom suggests that they do but I couldn't really find anything definitive either way. There was one study that concluded: Hot-water washing reduced mean mite numbers by 78% (p=.03) in the top loader, and 90% (p=.01) in the front-loader. Cold-water washing reductions were 65% (p=.05) top-loader, but only 10% (p=.78) front-loader. Adding the non-bleach oxidizer to cold washes had no significant effect on surviving mite numbers in either machine. It also should be noted the temps weren't the same, 115 Fahrenheit in tub top-loading vs 140 Fahrenheit in the front-loader. It seems that potentially adding a soak cycle to the washing would maybe be the best way to kill them, but the study simply looked at regular washes.

I read that it was the eggs that are killed at 60 degrees. No point killing the mites if there are thousands of eggs.
