    Of course they can! We had to cut down a huge pine tree that was slowly pushing against and damaging the foundation of my parents’ house with its roots. The previous owner had the great idea of planting it like 2 meters from the house.

    I think the reason for the vac was to keep the water out of the soil. The house was having settling issues because of poor drainage so the engineer wanted to reduce the amount of hydraulic action on the soil as much as he could.

    Trees cannot "bore through" drainage pipes, especially 100mm sewer pipe that was used here. There needs to be a break and water leakage in order for roots to enter. Furthermore, the roots travel a long way, so whether a tree is right next to a broken pipe, or 10 meters away makes little difference - the roots will find a way to get moisture.

  • @samuelmellars7855

    @samuelmellars7855

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@johncoops6897 Technically you are right. Thin end roots won't worm their way through the solid wall of a pipe However.... Roots will grow around any solid object in the soil, then as the roots thicken with age, they squeeze that object. If it is a pipe, that pipe can be flattened/crushed. It might even crack, and then the roots will get inside the pipe too. If the roots are near an imperfect join (like between plastic and concrete, or a non-glued/pressure fitted join) or near the end of a pipe, they can and will get in through a hairline gap... and then clog the pipe, force the gap wider....

  • @johncoops6897

    @johncoops6897

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@samuelmellars7855 - I guess that roots might apply pressure and crush a pipe as they grow, however that's an incredibly rare way for them to enter pipes. As for imperfect joints, leaky joins between concreteplastic and hairline gaps... yes, that's the whole point. You cannot have ANY of those things in an underground pipe run. And it doesn't matter how far away... the trees will find that pipe! Roots will radiate OUT from the base of the tree and find any moisture source within a surprising distance. In fact, the fine "water absorbing" root tips tend to be most prevalent well outside the drip line (leaf canopy) since more rainfall reaches the earth. So in many ways, putting your leaky pipe a fair distance away from a tree will make the chances of root ingress much higher!

  • @johncoops6897

    @johncoops6897

    One comment for Tim Anderson... I live in Sydney (like Ollie and Ratty) and we have a very dry climate. It can sometimes be years between rainfall, and my son (born 2004) was almost 6 years old before he ever saw rain! The soil here is BONE dry most of the time. Yet we pride ourselves in the bushland environment we live within, and there are trees absolutely everywhere. The native trees are highly adapted to the low moisture levels and have massive and evasive root structures (they actually die if they get too much rainfall LOL) We must built WITHIN the trees, and the planning doesn't allow clearing of land so we don't have the completely "tree-free" suburbs that we see in some parts of the USA. There are strict penalties for cutting down trees, and it's incredibly difficult to get permission to remove them, even if they are non-native or if they are dangerous. They even use Google Satellite View to find tree-cutters! So that means that in Sydney, like in other places, we have to live with the trees and plumb our drains accordingly. The Drain Addict channel shows what happens if the drains are leaky, rather than any inherent "danger" of trees. In dry environments the quality of the drainage pipes is even more critical - consider that tree roots in England don't need to seek out moisture since it's always raining and there's plenty of moisture in the soil.

    Congratulations Ollie on your 500th episode. Thank you for putting in all the time and effort for making these awesome videos for us to watch. This 2 hour video is perfect and something a lot of us have been dying for. Up next a Q&A session with Ollie and ratty. Seen people including myself have mentioned it before. Once again congrats 👍 from 🇨🇦

    Rainy day here in Switzerland, perfect to re-watch the centennials. And they are epic! Now it was fun following you guys through the struggle and seeing these impressive roots and it sure reminded every home-owner among us to never let it get this far. BUT, as many others commented: Was it really worth it? The time and effort Ivan had already put into those 4 or 5 holes, the time you spent together ... someone as handy with a little excavator as you are with jetter entering the scene might have been quicker and a more reliable fix, no? But THANKS A LOT for the effort and also for filming and posting 👍💪😅!

    now you'll have to have a live event and maybe get a sponsor to bring NYDrains to Australia or the other way around because they give you a lot of shoutouts and give Ratty a lot of corn. I'm sure people have a lot of questions about you and your business. I personally would love to see a live event. Very popular with yourtubers here in the States.

    It looks like when the drains were put in, the person flattened the ends of the pipe to fit into the curb drain slot. That then created a situation where there was always water sitting in the drain pipes and a prime water location for the tree. All of that has led to the home owner having a very expensive problem.

    That's some old school rigging, 16th century old school: Some riggers began to attach stays by splicing or seizing only a small loop into the end of the stay then passing the rope's tail around the mast and back through the small loop, like a slip-knot. To prevent this from slipping tightly around the mast when in use, a strong bulge was built into the standing part of the rope that could not fit through the small loop. This bulge was called a mouse or stay mouse. In modern rigging a mouse is for shackles, you'd put a zip-tie or locking wire through the eye of the shackle pin and around the shackle body in such a way to prevent rotation of the shackle pin.

    Another epic instalment as always, can I share a little advice though to Ivan, on the winch if he fits a bracket in the rear of his van of even a tow ball it would make winching the roots out much easier as it’s a lower pull vs the uphill pull he’s trying with the winch and tree option, other solution could be to strop the winch to the base of the tree again reducing the pull friction and angle. Good Job guys though well done for cleaning it looked like a grueller!
