Blocked Cat. Get Out Alive series. Cost and treatment for blocked cats.

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Urinary blockage in cats can be fatal. It can also be very expensive. This video is about "getting out alive." How to manage veterinary emergencies when cost is a concern. Please follow your vets advice and please never give up on treating a treatable pet. If your cat is blocked they need IMMEDIATE VETERINARY MEDICAL intervention! Please talk to your vet about getting the help your cat needs and doing it for a price you can afford. The alternative may be dying from a treatable disease or economic euthanasia. If you need help you can ask for free pet care assistance at Pawbly.com. Or follow my blog at KMDVM.blogspot.com.

I would have gladly spent the thousands to save my precious Sparky. My vet put him on fluids and Lasix.... and that's it. My poor baby died before I even figured out that he COULDN"T pee. 5 years later and it still tears me up. Wet food for my babies; my ignorance was my Sparky's undoing.

It would have been nice if she talked slower or listed her contact information in the video description. Our cat has been on wet food since he was a kitten, he’s about 17 months old now. Three weeks ago, a neighbor suggested doing a 50/50 wet/dry mix since he’s getting older and bigger. From what I can recall, I’ve NEVER had any issues with him until I modified his diet. I’m at beginning of day 3, he’s been to ER twice now for a blockage. The first night, they wanted to keep him for a few days on a catheter but for $2500 right before thanksgiving was impossible. We barely had little money for the $300 initial exam. They gave us meds and to observe him overnight, he didn’t pee so I took him back yesterday morning. I was able to come up with a couple hundred dollars for an outpatient unblocking option which went well when he left the ER. The rest of the day, he still couldn’t pee but I tried massaging and expressing him a few times throughout the night and he began to squirt a bit this morning. Finally, a quarter sized spot in his litter box is giving me an ounce of hope that he could possibly get better but we need resources! I spent every dime I had over the last two days and I need to link with organizations that can help us. It’s insane to remotely think of putting him down solely because of financial issues. I was able to make him squirt a few times minutes ago and right now, I’m still researching my options as well as facilities and organizations who can help us save our baby boy.

watching this because the animal hospital we took our cat to on an emergency did this procedure and is charging us like $4000 ( 2 days catheter and 1 day stay + tests). So we're paying them like $1000 a minute for their work I guess. I hate the cost so much but i'd be a wreck without my kitty.

This happened to my Ziggy back in 2012 when he was 1 and a half years old. Took him to the local private vet to be told hes got a water infection. She gave him an injection and we went home. Few days later he was getting worse. It was late at night and I didn't drive at the time, so I got a taxi to the nearest RSPCA. Same thing, gave him an injection. My mate picked me up and took me and Ziggy back to hers. He was peeing all over in pain. Skip forward a few more days (and another trip to a different RSPCA who were very rude) I got home to get ready for work to see Ziggy hadn't touched his food. He was lying on his side looking as if he was about to die with blood coming out of his backside. I cried and rang the first vet he went to. Took him in and the vet touched his bladder and said "He's blocked, if he doesn't get unblocked now he'll die" I swear to god Ziggy was starring straight at me. It was like I could hear him going "Don't make the wrong decision mam" Another vet came in and said "I've only treat 2 cats with this. One died and the other lived. Since you're a student I suggest you put him down, as it could cost you £500 to have him unblocked." In typical fashion I tried to ring everyone I knew for help, most people were at work and unable to answer the phone. My mate who picked us up before told me I didn't have to pay in one go, I could pay in installments. So I went back into the vets and told them to treat him and I will pay in bits. They agreed and took Ziggy in. I went to work that night hoping he'd be ok. Next morning I get a call hes been unblocked and slowly waking up. I rushed to get him. I got him back in his box, looking worse for wear. I sat down with him in his box on my knee facing the corridor. He must have known which vet handled him cos he hissed as soon as she walked past lol. Once home, he was switched to a wet food only diet. 7 years later Ziggy is 8 years old never had a problem since. He got snipped in 2014 when a new and better vet opened up. Ziggy also has a little sister now called Lady. Shes 4. Theres always hope, no matter what financial state you're in. Ziggy lives to tell the tale

We took our cat Bo to the vet on Tuesday morning after we noticed blood . He was completely blocked. We had no idea he had a problem because he's an indoor/outdoor cat. This beautiful kitten was only eight months old. He stole our hearts from day one. I honestly don't know if we could have spoiled any more then we already were. He was our baby....and we loved him sooooo much. So so so much. The morning we noticed blood we took him to the vet. I honestly had no idea what was wrong. The vet diagnosed a blockage and told us the cost to have him treated was 2000.00 ( before taxes) My hear sank. She also explained that without treatment he would die from a rupture in a very painful death within 24~48 hours.. I stood there, starring at her in disbelief. My otherwise healthy normal kitten was looking certain death in the face if I didn't pay 2000.00 ....immediately. My mind was racing. Panic set in. Covid 19 had taken a toll on our finances and 2000.00 was an option for us right now. Threw sobs I asked about a payment plan. I actually begged for a way to pay them ...in a way I could afford. I was told " I'm sorry. We don't offer payment plans but we take credit cards. Guys.... even if I paid $500.00 a month on a plan it would still take me almost 5 months to pay the bill off including the taxes and meds etc.....and there was no guarantee the blockage would return again. 😑 I was beyond devastated. I stood there in denial looking at my Bo thinking...omg....hes not coming home with me . A member of my family was going to die today laying on a cold silver table in a vet clinic all because I didn't have 2000.00 + dollars available in my account on that Tuesday morning. I started shaking and I felt like my chest was being ripped out. Then I said the words that have haunted me ever since. We will have to put him down. I don't want him to suffer any more . The vet didn't bat an eye. She mechanically muttered " I know its a hard decision to make" . I hugged our orange tabby who was a big boy for 8 months as the vet shaved his leg and injected him. I have never felt painl ike that....ever. No words can describe how I felt standing in that pale green office with a strange lady ive never met before, watching my beautiful Bo die right in front of my eyes. How could this even be happening???? Its been 5 days since I said good bye. Im not ok. Honestly....im struggling. I really loved him alot and I wasn't ready to say good bye. Im still not ready to say good bye. Even thou, im terrified of ghosts, I call for him hoping he will come. I'd rather have him in a ghost form then accept never seeing him again. funny isn't it...im litterally calling for a dead kitten to show himself to me to ease my pain . Ha...Im not couping very well with the loss .:( Im in my ANGRY phase of grieving. Im soooooo angry. This procedure that could have saved his life took 3 minutes. 2000.00+ for 3 minutes of a vets time. I am struggling to see how a vet justifies charging that amount of money for this procedure. There doesn't seem to be alot of over head required . It doesnt even seem like a second staff would be required to assist. Im angry. Im heart broken. Soooo unfair. We should have had another 15 years loving this cat. After watching your video...it just confirmed in my heart that vets are profiting from stressed families in this critical situation that have no other option other then to pay the over inflated price for treatment or watch their cat die. (.by euthinasia or painfully rupture at home) How can they call themselves Doctors or even claim to love animals? I dont know what I'm trying to say.....I needed to vent. Im finally all out of tears tonight. Whats left is a prepetual sick feeling in my stomach from guilt , the unexpected loss and pure exhaustion from stress. Thanks you for sharing this video. Im not sure if it helped me or made me feel worse but I know I need to see it. More then any thing. Thank you for letting me talk about Bo. I miss him alot. I hope he comes for a ghostly visit tonight.( well....maybe not....I might regret asking for that to happen ♡♡♡♡) Thanks again. Sincerely a cat lover at heart ❤ Amanda Regier Ont Cansda

@@ekittns if it were only as easy as you say. Vets actually make very little profit with the prices that they charge now. It is a mere fraction of the cost of comparable care for a person when you don't have health insurance. The cost of insurance, school loans, supplies, and other overhead takes up nearly every penny a vet brings in, in most cases. There is not nearly enough money to go around through non-profit donation collections for the people who need help. I wish you luck, but I hope that you do some research into this so that you have realistic goals for when you go to college. As someone who's worked in shelters and low cost vet care for 15 years, I can tell you that there is not much more that can be done to lower costs when it comes to veterinary care.

Thank you Krista for helping the owner cut the costs. About a year ago my big orange cat basically had a stroke so we rushed him to the ER Vet. They took a hefty $600 deposit, then put him on oxygen and fluids. Their suggestion was to put him down. That being his extended treatment costs would be incredibly high. So my wife and I spoke it over and agreed we did not want him to be in pain just for us. They brought him in to us and say goodbye. I swear between the time we got to the ER and when they stabilized him the cat was JUST FINE! So a few moments later they came back in with a few syringes of bright pink and green kill fluid ... which we said hell no to that ... he was back to almost normal. Since that time he has been back to regular fat whining for food at not meal time self. Just thinking back on how we nearly gave into this suggestion hits me. I don't get the vet ... who will just as easily kill your loved pet as try to figure out what is wrong with them. If human doctors acted that way ... well I don't know ... but I am glad to put you in a category well above the people I write about now. My sincere thanks for saving a life and a friendship!

What makes you think human doctors don't treat patients the same way? They do. It's a complex scheme to separate the personell from the effective euthanasia but it still ends in death. If they are too old. Don't have the funds to cover massive Co-pays. Don't have insurance. Or their condition guarantees that they will exceed the maximum benefit of Medicare or insurance. They have created multiple opportunities to interrupt critical care or simply not follow standards of care that greatly increase survival rates. Prophylactic or preventative use of antibiotics and other treatments are allowed to be "overlooked," for both emergency and non critical procedures. For older persons prophylaxis decreases the probability of complications and infections as much as fifty percent. The doctors and staff don't do it. The "SYSTEM," does it by the way care is managed....

Art Weaver You’re just trying to stir the pot. This is a video about cats with urinary blockages, not about how you feel about American medicine. You need to get your facts straight before spouting out such garbage. Who are you to say that doctors would withdraw care even if there’s a chance of recovery and QUALITY of life? Because they can’t pay? NEVER. Also, there is a huge difference in hospice/palliative care vs. “euthanasia”. Euthanasia of a human is called MURDER. Hospice and palliative care help a person live out the rest of their lives as comfortably as possible. And yes, I have been a health care provider for 27 years.

He had been a recused kitty from a no kill shelter. They told us to call them before we put him down. We didn't know what we could do, we called them. They sent use to a vet they use. They helped us with finding money to pay for it. It still came back. At that point they sent us to a ER vet. This all happened the same time my mother passed away. Needless to say I was very emotional. My husband handled it. They were to a surgery to what I call reroute him. They wanted to clear the crystals again. Because they have better equipment. He was there less than a day. My husband called the other vet she was pissed. She called the vet she wanted to send us to but was booked. The vet made room for us. She is the best. She only deal with cats. He had the surgery and doing good. She is the only one we see. She even found away to help us with the cost. So if you are in Tucson, Arizona go to Feline Limited. She is the best.

The vet is absolutely correct a good quality wet food diet is best but some cats just love their dry food so what I do and I'm a vet tech is I use both a high quality wet and dry food. I know it can be expensive but it's worth the money in the end! Foods like Royal Canin are great I use them myself but be sure to ask your vet which kind is best for your cats needs!!!! Every cat has different needs so that's why I wont recommend a certain kind or flavor within the brand itself! I have had cats and dogs my whole life and using quality food has let them all live way beyond life expectancy. My oldest cat was 25.6 years old and just passed away in Nov 2018 so it literally doubled his lifespan! My cats all have lived to be at least 19 so a healthy high quality diet is so important. Most dry cat foods are horrible they have high ash and PH content which literally will block your cat as seen in this video!

That's sheer nonsense ... Animals are not like children ... children are .... well ... like children. Most ... really, pretty much all the cats I've ever owned, have been strays off the street ... often in bad shape and needing some place to get warm. I'm willing to bet many, many people can say the same. My taking them in, whether I had money or not, was good for them ... maybe not the best or the most ideal ... but better than starving, dying of some relatively simple sickness, or just a dirty, matted ball of fur that is about to freeze to death. So, would you propose that if I didn't have "enough", money for some of the things that could come up, that I kick a cat out of the house .... maybe to simply die, or maybe be euthanized ... shit ... KILLED? I think your statement is just a little "pollyanna" ... just a little ...

@@PISQUEFrancis you just said "not a lot of money" so that's what I said. Strays are not "YOUR PETS" So you just contradicted yourself? If you have a helping hand go for it. And by the way their are children that are starving, dirty, and need help. So I'm not sure why you said they're not the same? But ok.

  • @PISQUEFrancis

    @PISQUEFrancis

As I said, "children", are children. One makes children, or adopt children and there are long-term, legally binding issues with children ... almost 20 years of needed care, training and rearing ... til they can fend for themselves ... AND LEAVE! Many people "choose", to get a kitten, or a cat from somewhere ... this implies a somewhat minimal level of responsibility. Somewhere between feeding and CATASTROPHIC need. In my mind it includes acceptance into one's home, and reasonable care. If a cat suffers an incurable illness which causes pain ... one might have the cat KILLED(I'm sorry "euthanized") ... try that one with a child). How about "well-to-do" cat "owners", having a cat's claws RIPPED out ... by a well paid vet, who obviously wouldn't do such a thing if it wasn't really needed? Is that included in the "enough money", category? I don't think an animal becomes a "pet", simply because one has control the animal .... ties it to a tree ... locks it in a house, or walks it a leash ... A "stray", is either a basically ignored "stray", or it becomes a "special", kind of pet that enjoys a unique mutual need(one, maybe for food ... the other, maybe for company), .... not a pet that is "controlled", as much as a pet that mutually "shares", it's living space with ... say, a human ... When the relation is mutual ... who's to say is the "pet" and who is the "owner", and does the unique situation of one, really matter to the other? After all, if either doesn't get what it needs ... the relation probably just dissolves. I don't understand why your specific point of concern is ... "Strays are not "YOUR PETS" So you just contradicted yourself?". It's not a contradiction at all ... although, as anyone with cats(or other "stray", animals probably knows, it might be a slight misuse of a very commonly used term. , which really involves implications of mutual interest.

@@BrokenInTheBox Check this out: www.catnutrition.org/urinary-tract-issues.html I've had over $3,000 worth of "experience" with feline urinary issues, and have since done a lot of research and spoken to several vets. One of the BEST things you can do for any cat, but especially those with urinary tract issues is this: make sure they take in a LOT of water! (Especially if they're on dry food!) I've had cats for decades and only just recently learned that they have a LOW THIRST DRIVE. This means that they do not drink enough, so we need to entice them to drink water. Leaving out a water dish is NOT enough! I feed my cats a high-quality wet food and I also make a "soup snack" for them at least once a day, consisting of a couple of tablespoons of water, mixed with a bit of wet food or fish juice. They need even more if they're on dry food (which is not good for them and should only be a last resort if you can't afford decent wet food.)

Some are a ripoff. Cost near 2k just to find out my cat was diabetic. A cheap diabetics test strip will tell you that. Know diabetics and could've saved alot. A sign is very hard to scoop pee in litterbox. Never again. Just would have to pay for insulin and needles. A plugged cat only cost me 80 dollars at a different vet and got antibiotics for any sign of it happening again. Just a urinary tract infection I can treat right away at home and no vet needed if good strong ones like Baytril or Zithromax and see pee by morning and not bloated. Have a good vet that will give me a round of antibiotics since everything happens in the middle of the night, weekends or holidays. I've vet shopped a lot or if they don't give me a price up front, I call someone else. One vet will charge 600 for a c section for a purebred and others are a ripoff at 1500 to 3k. One breeder only paid 500 for a c section and 8 kittens. Question vets and if they're not up front, move on. I had a cat nearly lose a foot after a broken leg after a vet wrapped her foot too tightly and swelled really bad. I was was there every day or two then said forget this. Do it myself. A new vet knew her and said she was fired for incompetence after a short time there and nearly at the expense of my poor cat's foot. Just like people doctors. You are such an amazing veterinary doctor!! Seriously an earth Angel. The world NEEDS more people like you. I came across your video because I’m endless looking up what to expect after a urinary blockage and almost stage 3 kidney failure. My boy Gizmo, who is only a year and a half old and extremely healthy and happy. He is a neutered indoor male, and almost lost his life on Friday when I came home from work, and he was limp, lifeless, gasping for air, his eyes were shifting and I could see his second eyelid. He was perfectly fine when I left for work on Friday morning and I came home to one of the scariest moments of my life. I live in Portland, Oregon and walk-in clinics do not exist out here. I had to call 11 different places, and they all told me that they were short staffed or at maximum capacity, five of them being 24 hour emergency vets. I thought he got into something poisonous because he had ALL those symptoms. I finally ran him to Dove Lewis, which I knew was going to be almost $2000 to walk into the door. $2,000 of which I didn’t not have but I was going to do whatever I could to save my boy. They took him back and told me that he was in extremely critical condition and they needed to do some thing ASAP. It was going to be $3500 for him to stay the night but thankfully they told me they could cut corners and it would be OK so they charge me $2000 which I had to borrow from family member because I only had 1000. Of course the worst timing and I’ve always had money saved up for emergencies like this but I had to go back home to Chicago in January for my grandma‘s funeral and maxed out my credit card. Anyways, it was a living nightmare and he had to stay for four days and each day cost $1000. Total cost was around $4,000. He is on prescription, wet, food, as well as a new water fountain that he likes, and I am monitoring him every single second of the day when he goes to the bathroom how much he goes as well as how much he’s eating and drinking. He’s still wobbly and he is on pain medication and antibiotics because he spiked a fever before he came home on Monday afternoon. I thought maybe the pain medication would make him fall over which, as you know are the signs of a urinary blockage, but the vet assured me that since he was so critical and minutes away from dying, he might have neurological damage which might go away within a couple weeks or he might have that forever, but it won’t stop him from living a happy. healthy & long life. Your videos are giving me a piece of mind & keep my hopeful for my boys future. He has a follow up appointment at his primary vet on Wednesday but if anything happens prior to then, fingers crossed it doesn’t, I’ll have to find another 24 hour vet seeing how Dove Lewis said they have to refuse to care for him until we pay the $702 and a $4000 that we owe them because we cannot access our gofundme money for another week. Thank you for reading and SO much love to all of you/your cats/ furbabies! 💕❤️

tbh a urinary blockage like this is a pretty straightforward diagnosis. Most diagnoses require testing because they have symptoms that are more vague or can be symptoms of several different disease processes (for example, vomiting and diarrhea, or lethargy). Generally, blocked cats have very similar symptoms - in and out of the box and crying, straining to urinate/defecate, and upon presentation have a large, firm bladder. Ideally you do bloodwork and xrays to rule out bladder cancer, bladder stones, kidney disease, etc but the most common cause is a urinary blockage caused by crystals in the urine.

The end of this made me burst into tears. Our sweet 3 year old Male cat lost his life to this. After spending thousands (they let us make payments) on getting him unblocked over and over again, when we were struggling financially...we had to have him put down anyways, because he reblocked 4 times. I would sit with him for hours after his visits hoping and praying he would pee on his own, but he just couldn’t do it. One night when I was sitting on the floor with him, he started shaking uncontrollably and his eyes rolled back and only a few drops of pee came out. He also defecated all over the floor. I could tell he was suffering and was in so much pain. My husband and I made the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make of putting him down. It’s been almost 4 years and I always think of what I could have done differently. Then I see this and realize we might have been able to save him :( not a day goes by where I don’t think about him. You are such a sweet person and it's very obvious that you truly care. God definitely put you in the right line of work! We love our animals and we know how much other people love their animals but when you care this much especially when it's not your own animal, that just says everything! I think some veterinarians and even human doctors can get numb from to sing so many animals and people all day but you can tell that you really do care and that's amazing!

If you can't put the intra-urethral catherter in right away because it's technically difficult, or if you can't afford it at a certain vet because they overcharge, at least get them to empty the bladder by a transcutaneous bladder ponction to releave the cat's pain/dicomfort. That could buy you a few hours so you can find another vet that will do the catheterism for much cheaper.

My fur son had the beginning stages of crystals, but we caught it in time. I immediately put him on Urinary wet/kibble and he has had no issues since then. I'd rather pay extra for his food than a vet visit. The good thing is his fur sister can eat it too with no issues.

Wow this video came up on my recommended about 5 days ago, this morning my cat Hazel was squatting in pain over his food bowl. I put him in a clean litter box and he was frozen for 5 minutes without passing wee. I knew straight away what was wrong I am SO THANKFUL I saw this as it made me take action immediately. He was vomiting too. The vets tried for 2 hours to put the catheter in but couldn't. He's having the op done tomorrow. Luckily I insured him, he's only a mutt but the sentimental value and the heartbreak that would come with euthanising due to lack of funds would break my heart. He should be sorted by tomorrow. Thank you so much for this video!!!!

I don't know what to think of this. I was not able to finish veterinary school, due to family situation and finances not because I was failing or unable to do the work, but I picked up enough information through 4 years as a bio/chem major and 2 years in vet school to do a great deal of medical care myself. My husband and I have a rescue and about 35 animals, mostly cats a few dogs a donkey 2 goats ferrets and 2 chincillas, right now. If I wasn't able to treat many things at home and order bulk supplies of antibiotics I couldn't care for so many. I had a friend call me sobbing her heart out because she had taken a stray kitty she had adopted to the vet. The cat was pregnant when my friend found her and had given birth to 3 precious babies. The cat started having seizures so they rushed her to the vet, who wouldn't treat her. Flat out refused because he wanted a 500 dollar down payment. I tried. I hooked up an IV, I used whatever meds I could get a hold of, and I did the best I could. It didn't owrk. I did not have the equipment or medications needed to save that cat and the vet refused because they ddin't have 500 dollars on-hand. That happens a lot. Urinary blockage kills many loved pets because their owners simply do not have the money. Its great to say 'don't give up on treatable animals' and I don't give up on them. Pet owners who love their animals normally don't 'give up' but when the vet wants a huge down-payment and the family just flat-out does not have it, the animal dies.

My Male cat kept having this happen and my vet finally suggested the penal surgery and he's now 15 with no recurrence of blockages in over 7 years. One of my FB friends just took their cat to an emergency vet and due to the $$$ they had him put to sleep...I couldn't believe it?! We have 3 emergency vets and they ALL charge obscene amounts of $$$ and prey on the animal owners that are in distress due to emergency...so sad!!! I'm so glad your on here explaining and making people aware of their options! Thank you!!!

After working in emergency in the SF area for 2+ years, my least favorite thing (even above HBCs, etc) is urinary obstructions. They're such a pain to deal with. (I mean, of course I love helping animals, but we get like 2-3 in at the same time and then bladder flushes q6 on an uncomfortable cat, etc...) not to mention going over the estimate with the owner. I work in a shelter now and just did our first unblocking since I've been there, and it's so much better now that I don't have to deal with the money aspect of it... It's so awesome how you can treat for that little amount of money!!

Thank you so much for sharing. It is such a heartbreaking feeling knowing there's something wrong with your pet, seeing them suffer, and not knowing if you can afford to take their pain away or if you only have the money to get them euthanized. This just happened to my little boy Loki and I was a total wreck knowing that it was such a small thing causing him such misery. What's your recommendation for diet with these cats? Is there any type of dry food that is higher quality that's safer to feed? What is it in the cheap dry food that can cause this to happen?

We had two indoor cats - a Birman and a Persian. We live in Scotland and veterinary charges are crazy here too but we had Petplan Insurance. It cost us approximately £48 per month which I think is around $61. As the cats got older, their health deteriorated and although Petplan didn’t cover 100% of the costs, it went a good way towards it. I don’t know what we would have done without insurance.

@@natlenan6743 wow what a dick comment. The 1500-3500 includes everything that pet will need from when they walk into the hospital until they leave... usually several days later. That is for anesthesia, unblocking, xrays, antibiotics, supportive care, lab work (bloodwork, urinalysis, urine culture are typical), hospitalization, round the clock care and monitoring, pain medication, prescription food, medications to relax the urethra and support kidney and bladder function, anti-inflammatories, urinary catheter, sterile collection system, e. collar, daily exams with the doctor, and whatever else that pet needs to give him the best chance of a full recovery. Try that in human medicine. You can't even get the ER exam with bloodwork for that amount yet it's the same level of education and it's the same labwork done in an independent lab. Maybe try not talking out of your ass, it'll probably help your breath.

People should know that cats shouldn't eat dry cat food except for urinary tract dry food! you can buy Iams and Purina one urinary cat food. Also buying pet water fountains causes cats to drink more water which can help prevent crystals in the cats urine. This advice saved my cats life. Sometimes real strong urine can mean crystals have formed or there is a urinary infection. To help with the pain you can buy urinary Homeo drops that can help the cat. Homeopathic drops can be purchased on Amazon. A cats urine pH must be acidic. Eating dry regular cat food causes alkaline urine which creates struvite crystals. That's what has happened to this cat.
