I was in a band called 'Blitzkrieg' in 1981-82. We were out of Petaluma CA. We were not aware of this band...but it's funny, we had a very similar sound. We didn't have any recordings...had a lead singer that couldn't keep it together, he was a great singer though, ended up going to prison. We tried to replace him...end of band.

It's pretty wild to realise that Hetfield's vocal style is basically him adopting a geordie accent.

I love the metallica cover, but sometimes you need that old school garage fuzz in your guitar.

You hit the nail on the head! I wasn't sure how to describe what I term as Raw Metal, but you've answered that! I was 13 in 1980 and was there when it was first emerging. Miss those days, especially when it was more underground. Love the Metallica version, and just found this one which, too, is awesome!

JEG I like this version but it’s too slow, so I put it on 1.25 speed, just personal taste because I have weird taster. I also speed up misfit songs as well... like I said they need to be faster for me to enjoy them

THANK YOU WOLFGANG FOR POSTING THIS!!!! Ian Jones a Blitzkrieg band member co-wrote and played on this track. Metallica used to honour him by taking him on tour with them when they woudl come to the Uk. He was my best friend and co-songwriter in our own band project DEAD EASY. Ian passed away 2 years ago and is HUGELY MISSED!!! Rock on In Peace Ian. Love, Electra

I am sorry to hear that Ian has died, I am just catching up on a great track, I do have the single though, I saw them in Bedford, on the day that I finished my O-Levels in 1981, I bought the single and a pin badge, I still have both over 40 years later! The sad truth is that Metallica ripped this song off. Almost every song on 'Kill 'em All' was ripped off by Metallica. It's just that American metal heads of the time hadn't heard these because they were by obscure European bands...and some not so obscure. I mean - Diamond Head?

For fuck's shake...Metallica never covered a song just to make it sound better. They covered it because they LIKED the damn song. Everyone knows, the "original is better" in every occasion, it's the one that's got the respect. I like both versions btw..why create such nonsense "fights" in every video. 'Blitzkrieg' and 'Am I Evil' were very high in my favourite 'Metallica' songs.. I did not know that they were covers (BKg DH) at the time... but I can see why Metallica covered them.. did a pretty good job on both. The point I'm trying to make is that the original versions of both these songs are exceptionally solid metal masterpieces in their original form.. and from relatively unknown bands. I'm off to find some more Blitzkrieg and Diamond Head stuff now... :-)

It was Michael! I was 13 in 1980 when all of the NWOBHM was starting to come to fruition. It was all underground. Long before Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet came out(not knocking it,just what I consider the transition period to more commercial heavy metal and hard rock), bands like Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motorhead, Judas Priest(although they'd been around for a while)Motley Crue, Dio, and many more, were hitting their stride, and headbangers were in a world of our own. You found out about new bands through your friends. It was a real social thing. The internet is awesome for finding out about these older bands, and that's what I'm enjoying doing, finding out about the more obscure bands and ones that did originals before others made covers more popular. Fun and more innocent times! Wish I could go back!

The first time I heard this opening riff...I was listening to "Hocus Pocus" by Focus, which came out 10 years earlier!

I grew up to Metallica version and only as a grown-up learnt about this original. It really kicks ass and I began to appreciate it, it's very dramatic, theatrical I'd say, almost like heavy metal symphony. Very powerful.

When you can hear the sound of fingers sliding over strings! Missing in so many over produced records!

Ill never forget how this type music was taboo and all.. i mean ALL radio and tv flat out refused to play it or even aknowlege it.. it was %100 fan driven, word of mouth. And we loved it

I've been diving so far into the obscure bands with totally strange sounds I somehow ended up back at the roots.

56 people didn't survive the blitzkrieg...

NWOBHM is the shit. Interestingly, all of the originals that Metallica covered, were better than the covers. But the Metallica guys were the ones to embark on a career spanning decades and become superstars in the process. It's all about right place, right time.
